Meeting in Edingburgh
Who: Kingsley Shacklebolt and Remus Lupin
Where: The Jolly Judge, Edinburgh
When: 8pm and onwards
Warnings/rating: PG

Edinburgh was quite crowded, quite cold and far too wet this winter, but Kingsley still loved the town. He's spent enough time in the old parts of the town to know them by heart, and he was familiar with several pubs that were sufficiently private and quiet for this purpose.

The Jolly Judge was really perfect. A few regulars, a few stray tourists, a general mixed crowd where nobody really took notice of each other, pleasant atmosphere and the best ales on tap. A quarter to eight Kingsley nodded lightly at the barkeep when he entered and took off his rainwet coat and hung it in the wardrobe before he went to the bar.

After a few polite words, he ordered an Arran ale then sat down at one of the tables not quite all the way in the back so he could see Remus Lupin when the man arrived.

Remus had to admit that he was a little nervous while at the same time curious of what Kingsley had to tell him. He knew that as long they didn't find Peter and show the world that Sirius was really innocent. However that seemed to be harder then he had first thought. Peter seemed to have found a rather good way to hide himself, and Remus was starting to give up hope that Sirius would ever be able to walk out as a free man. Now that Kingsley had send the owl, Remus sincerely hoped that there was a good change ahead.

He had found the pub with a little difficulty, smiling in relief as he entered it. He looked around for a moment, spotting Kingsley after a while and walking over to the table where he was sitting.

"I hope you have not been waiting long," Remus said as he moved to sit down.

Kingsley saw Remus when the man entered but gave him time to look around instead of drawing attention. He smiled as Remus sat down and shook his head.

"No, I've barely had time to take a sip of this fine ale yet." Kingsley pointed at his glass. "Do you want anything to drink?"

Thinking for a moment, Remus nodded. "Yes, I think I will," Remus replied waiting for the waiter to come over. He ordered himself a small ale and then looked around the pub for a moment, until his ale was served and then looked back at Kingsley with a raised eyebrow.

"I do hope you don't have bad news," he asked seriously, taking a small sip of his drink.

Giving Remus time to settle in, Kingsley observed the man. He seemed calm enough, but that was rarely a true image of what went on inside Remus Lupin.

"That would depend entirely on point of view. But I'm fairly sure that for you... and our common friend, it can potentially be very good news." Kingsley took another sip of his ale. He didn't want to drag it out, but it should be worded correctly so Remus wouldn't become too excited too soon. Things might not look the same to the Wizengamot as they did to Kingsley.

"Today I was informed that one of the Death Eaters captured in connection with the escape of the Lestranges and others from Azkaban has gone through a Veritaserum interview. And during that interview he revealed that Sirius Black has never been a Death Eater and that it was Pettigrew who revealed the Potters' whereabouts to you-know-who, not Sirius." Kingsley watched Remus closely for any reactions.

Remus simply sat there listening to Kingsley, every now and then taking a sip from his ale. As Kingsley had finished, Remus didn't say anything at first. It was too good to be true, but at the same time he remembered how Fudge could be. He had been stubborn about some things ever since he had started to become Minister, which Remus had also been confronted with ever since Umbridge was working for the werewolf rights, which left Remus mainly with none.

"So is the Ministry planning to re-open the case, or simply ignore the existance of that interview?" Remus asked quietly.

"Another team of Aurors were in charge of the interrogation and the report was handed over to the Head of Aurors at the same time as I was informed. The other Auror is of the same opinion as me, that this does give grounds for a re-opening of the case. But I know it would take more to convince the Ministry of anything that implies they made a mistake." And wasn't that the truth. It frustrated Kingsley deeply that admitting a mistake seemingly was impossible for the Ministry, making it doubly hard to reverse those mistakes.

"Which is why I have contacted you. I know you know of Sirius' whereabouts, and ... I think this would need a veritaserum interview of you, and others who might have additional information. Possibly also scrutiny by a Legilimens. This also applies to Sirius..." The last was inevitable, even if it would endanger Sirius' freedom. He couldn't be cleared unless he volunteered himself into Ministry custody and agreed to a veritaserum interview.

"You do know that the Ministry will hardly want to believe me, even if I am under the Verisaterum?" Remus asked seriously. Being a werewolf made it the Ministry not to accept anything he said, no matter how much he said the truth. For him it looked difficult for the Ministry taking the effort to interview him, but he knew that if Kingsley took the lead it might as well work out. Taking long sip from his ale, he looked back at him with a thoughtful expression.

"Say Sirius comes out from hiding, to get himself cleared. What if I convince him to go through with his plan, but Fudge decides to ignore giving him another chance and give him the kiss. What do we do then?" he asked. He didn't want to loose Sirius for another time, and he wanted to make sure that there was a least some plan B for them to get Sirius out one way or another.

"Yes, I know that Remus. Which is also why I would like to draw in a few other people for veritaserum interviews in order to support your statement. If there are others..." Remus' concerns were extremely valid in Kingsley's eyes, and it was deeply frustrating to be part of a system where the truth was worth less than your status, be it in concern with blood, finances or ... in this case, werewolf nature.

"Sirius shouldn't come out of hiding before all other evidence is shown to first the Head of my Department and then the Wizengamot, and we can be very sure his case will be evaluated favourably. I can give no guarantees, I wish I could..." And he did. Sirius Black's case had always been a thorn in Kingsley's eye, going against everything he'd learned as an Auror, smacking more of 'scapegoat' than justice.

Remus sat there for a while saying nothing. He had no idea of what he was suppsed to do, he couldn't simply decide over Sirius's head but at the same time he knew that this was a chance that they had to take. Sipping on his ale for a while, he let his gaze wander through the pub. It was really the perfect place, and he would have to remember it.

"Alright. Tell me what I have to do," Remus said quietly, while inwardly promising himself that if this shouldn't help Sirius, he would make sure Fudge's life hell.

"Give me a few days to work on my superiors to agree on re-opening the case. Use those days to gather whatever you can of any kind of evidence in Sirius' favour and work on Sirius to convince him this is a good chance for him. Also think of whom might be pertinent to call in for a veritaserum interview to support your statement."

Kingsley looked intently into Remus' eyes, willing him to understand how important this was, and how much Kingsley truly wanted to get this absolutely right "And lastly but no less important, make absolutely sure Sirius leaves the place he is currently in, unless the place is hidden by a Fidelius or you don't know where it is. The question of his current whereabouts will inevitably have to come during the interview, and I would rather not get a helpful answer to that particular question. It would be best if you could truthfully say you have no idea."

Kingsley had to do this completely by the book, at least at the Ministry. This was not by the book, but it was necessary and the only way to reach the full truth in this case.

"He's under the Fidelius, so that should be no problem," Remus replied taking another sip from his ale. He knew that Sirius was going to be excited when he heard that there could be a way for him to finally be completely free. However he hoped that Sirius was going to stay level headed and not do anything rush.

"I don't think that Sirius will need a lot convincing," Remus said seriously with a soft chuckle.

"Good," Kingsley noted and took a good swallow of his own ale. There was a lot of work ahead of him... of them, actually. Remus would have to not only gather information that could be viable proof in favour of Sirius, he also had to control Sirius in the process. Kingsley smirked a little at Remus' comment.

"I didn't think he would be. Perhaps it's more a matter of telling him that this is such a big chance that he shouldn't risk doing anything that might endanger it." Sirius had never been easy to control, if not even impossible, and had that reckless and rash attitude that was terribly attractive in the 'bad boy' way, but intensely frustrating when calm and sensibility was demanded. "I wish I could help you, but it's better if I know as little as possible about Sirius right now."

"Don't worry. I'll make sure nothing happens," Remus replied. He would work as much as possible from Grimmauld place and try to keep Sirius occupied at the same. He hoped that Sirius would maybe help him a little as well, which would keep him occupied as well. If not, then Remus would have to find different ways to entertain his lover.

"Good." Kingsley knew Remus would do his best. "I'll contact you as soon as I know anything and we can set a time for the interview." Kingsley could be quite convincing, especially with his rate of success in solving cases. So far, only Sirius had evaded him, and that was quite on purpose. Although, as long as the man lived in a place protected by the Fidelius, and stayed there, nobody could get to him unless they had access or could turn around the Secret Keeper.

Kingsley raised his glass lightly towards Remus "To success," he said with a light smile. It really would be a great victory if he could clear this mess up once and for all, and set the record straight no matter what the truth turned out to be, even if Sirius turned out to be guilty after all. That was however an outcome Kingsley doubted very much. It just didn't make sense.

"To success," Remus replied, lifting his glass a little in return and then taking a sip from his ale. He couldn't really believe that all of this was happening, but he was relieved that it was. He didn't know of what would have happened if they would never gotten chance to get Sirius freed.

"If this is really going to work, I owe you a drink," he said with a grin, followed by a small chuckle.
