    Happy December Birthdays!
    According to LJ, IJ, and DW, the following people have birthdays coming up this month: [info]erickajo*, [info]pyjamapants, [info]snarkywench_64, [info]liz_marcs, [info]seti_apollonius, [info]pendamuse, [info]gypsy_morph, [info]jackiejlh, [info]theturningworld, [info]saracen77**, [info]savine_snape, [info]lady_rhian, [info]sc010f, [info]keladry_lupin, [info]ayerf, [info]slyth_wolf, [info]wonderfulwrites, and [info]mollyssister. Happy birthdays to you all!

If you would like an original or fannish drabble (story of 100 words) or ficlet (less precisely worded but still very short story) as a birthday gift, please comment with the fandom and character(s) or pairing you'd like it to be about (obviously not quite applicable for original fic) and some sort of prompt, and I'll do my best to get it written before your next birthday! (A lot sooner if I can help it. Yes, I realize I still owe fics back to August, but now that clinical's done with class soon to follow, maybe I can finally write more than just TFTWSD.)

If you're wanting a rundown of what I will/won't write, I've got a post covering the basics here on LJ and here on IJ, though I should add that just because I haven't written a fandom or pairing before doesn't mean I wouldn't enjoy a challenge. And if you're wondering how to prompt for something non-fannish, there are some suggestions here on LJ and here on IJ.

*Has anyone seen or heard from [info]erickajo in the past, oh, 11 months or so?

**I think I still owe you last year's birthday fic, [info]saracen_77. *cringes* Sorry!

    some o' them there summaries
Note: I unsubscribed from the full-HP feed on FFN that was giving me so much fodder. I just couldn't take it; ~900+ posts a week had me feeling overwhelmed and like this was a chore rather than something I did every now and then for fun. So I will still be making posts like this every so often as I do still have a feed set up for character=Severus Snape, but that's a much slower stream.

Disclaimer: Do not take too seriously; I am not necessarily saying the fics in question are bad ones. Sometimes they are horrible, but more often they are just mediocre, and sometimes quite okay, but they all had something in their summaries that I found goofy, misused, or amusing in some other way.

harrys living in a mad world. but for how long?

Depends on whether he makes friends with Randal McMurphy.

    -----

severus and harry are trapped in "la'trap" hotel and not sure why. but they were both dropped there with no clue as how to get out... it's going to be hell staying cooped up with each other..or is it?

A name like "La Trap" wasn't a warning sign?

Harry Potter was Dead. Or at least, just as good as.

Harry Potter was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that.

    Must. Go. See.
Oh my goodness! Art from my incredibly gifted secret santa was the first gift posted at [info]snarry_holidays :-) Y'all, it is so awesome - done in ballpoint pen on paper - OMG can't get over how gorgeous it is!

    Title: Protective Custody
    Artist: Certainly not Severus Snape
    Giftee: [info]sev1970
    Media/Medium: Ballpoint pen on paper
    Rating: PG
    Pairing: Snarry
    Warnings: None
Disclaimer: All Harry Potter characters herein are the property
of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No copyright infringement
    is intended.
Summary: Harry certainly didn't enjoy spending the last part of
his sixth year in detention after the Sectumsempra incident, copying
out his father's past misdeeds. Imagine having to watch over him for
hours on end, from only a few feet away, knowing what happened, what
will never be, and what's coming... Any day now.
Artist's Notes: You asked for gen, with angsty Harry and
protective Snape at Hogwarts. I hope this fits the bill! All furniture
and the knicknacks on Snape's desk, including the lopsided oil lamp
with modern lampshade on, were inspired by Snape's office as it
    appeared in the CoS movie.

I betaed two pieces for [info]snapelyholidays and I just sent an email saying I'm available to proofread stuff for [info]snarry_holidays. What am I, weird?

    ... probably.

(btw, if anyone cares, I have an "open door" policy on this: time permitting, I'm generally always available to beta stuff.)

Rainbow Award Covers, Round 6 (Not the Final One Yet)
Hey, friends, it seems that I misunderstood the rules, and there will be one more round than I expected.

Now we have 20 beautiful covers in the competition. At the end of this round, there will be just 10 contestants. And then we will have the final round.

The cover of Clippings (art by [info]korekan, design by [info]morgan_d) is still competing, and everyone can vote again. Here.

    And I made it!
I successfully met the [info]5_for_five challenge: write at least 500 words at least 5 times out of the week for 12 weeks. Ta-da!

    Shiny!

The fic o'doom, aka The Fic That Wouldn't Stay Dead, is now over 66,500 words. Meep! But I think it's keeping me relatively sane this semester, and the motivation of this challenge has helped me keep at it. It's rabid enough that it'd probably have kept eating my brain anyway, but there's this thing that happens when you let a rabid story do that without ever writing any of it out. It just sort of spins itself out and dies. Now, that might actually be a good thing in some cases. There are times I think that might be the best fate for this fic. BUT the writing of it continues to take the weight of the semester off my mind at key times, so having the motivation to sit down and churn out at least 500 words (and often as not, it's after passing that point that a scene takes off) has been a very good thing.

Huge thanks to [info]lady_rhian who thought up this challenge in the first place and mega thanks to [info]sshg316 for opening the challenge up to the rest of us and helping keep us motivated to just keep writing!

Also? Tomorrow's the last day of clinical for this semester. Whee!

You shall all be rewarded with more icons, lol.

    2. Fandom progress from the wretchedly-late-on-everything Ven:
    DONE: darkfest, SevShorts fic
ALMOST DONE: Snapely Hols, Snarry Hols
WELL UNDER WAY: Sev Big Bang, Kinky Xmas
    NO CLUE YET: Snarry Swap

    3. Lots of stuff to repost, and here comes the end of the year, yikes! Now I understand why the well organized journaler does monthly summaries! well, stay tuned for more goodies.

    4. I'm gearing up for a roadtrip to Michigan. I havent done that in some years, so am dreading/looking forward to it. I'll take older dog, Seneca for company. There's a funeral I really want to attend, and I am overdue for a visit to the ancestral spawning grounds.
I need to load up on podfic and get a car charger for the ipod. Any friends along the Ohio TP east of Toledo?

    5. Next post: ART SALE!

    Shows I've Been Watching
The Barchester Chronicles: I watched the first six eps. There’s just one ep left now. The Stanhopes are wonderfully witty. Slope is a nasty piece of work! His battles with Mrs Proudie are hilarious.

House: I watched all the eps up to the 6.05 (Brave Heart). I’ve been loving Season 6. There’s more interaction between the characters, something that was lacking in the previous seasons.

Mad Men: I’ve finished Season 3. Wow, what a great finale! cut for spoilers )

Merlin: I’m up to date. I’m afraid I disagree with most of my journal friends about the latest ep, “The Lady of the Lake”, because cut for spoilers )

Fic rec: The Guardian (Torchwood, PG, Jack/Ianto)
Helluva day to post a rec, at least for folks this side of the pond, but here it is nonetheless.

    Title: The Guardian
    Author: [info]madambackslash
    Fandom: Torchwood
    Rating: PG
Characters: Jack Harkness, John Hart, Gray, Ianto Jones, Rhiannon Davies, Mica Davies, OCs
    Spoilers: Through CoE
Summary: The Jones family has lived in Cardiff for a very long time...
Why you should read it: This tale starts in 27 CE with a very young witness to a horrific event, a witness who proceeds to give that event a meaning that grows through time and then persists well beyond. To say more would spoil it, but it's beautiful and sad and touching and I expect it's a story I'll revisit more than once. Have Kleenex handy when you read.

    Thankful, and feast preparations
First, the feast preparations are underway!
    • The turkey, all 21 # of him, are brining happily in the cooler outside. It was so freshly... uh... processed it needed a thorough rinsing, then it's soaked overnight in salty ice water. In the morning, I'll push rosemary under the skin, and stuff it loosely with lemon rinds and onions just for flavour. The stuffing gets baked seperately, which makes it lighter. and the bird cooks faster and more evenly.
    • For classic stuffing I use Pepperidge Farm brand and enhance it with sauted onion, celery, turkey stock, butter. Maybe mushrooms. And cracked green peppercorns.
    • For a green veggie: Roasted brussel sprouts
    • My Irish housemate makes divine mashed potatoes to go with my awesome gravy.
    • Houseguest from NC is making baked Delicata squash, low-sugar apple pie and cranberry-apricot sauce.
    • We also have pumpkin ice cream to embellish that pie.
    And now, for some gratitude.
I am incredibly grateful for my warm and beautiful home, a place people want to be. I am blessed with wonderful friends, nearby and all over (**hugs you!**).  I have wonderful animal companions whom I adore. I am grateful for the time I have had away from work, to recover , to look ahead, to plan and prepare for much-needed change. Many blessings come to me from the amazing passion and creativity of my friends and colleagues. I love all the inspiration, entertainment, amusement, motivation, stimulation and challenge your art, writing, music and healing work brings into my life.I am grateful for my parents and grandparents, (all deceased) from whom I received so many gifts. I treasure the intellect, imagination, talent and passion you gave to me. I love the land I walk on, the food that grows in her, the river that waters us, the trees, flowers, vines, grasses, berries, briars, wild irises, underwater grasses that make this world so soft and green and beautiful. I cherish the animals I love with in these wild woods, the deer, possum, fox, racoons, chipmonks, squirrels, weasels, otters and mice. I am in awe of the birds, from the enormous bald eagles to the tiny hummingbirds, the herons, ducks, geese, cormorants, coots, grebes, grackles, crows, vultures, osprey, seagulls, warblers thrushes and wrens, I love you all. Even the crawly and flying things... for every nasty bloodsucking mosquito there is a Luna moth or swallowtail butterfly, an irridescent beetle, a colorful caterpiller, a dazzling dragonfly. Even the spiders are awesome.

May you all have a day filled with blessings.
