"I hate it here."

Gondul doesn't ask why. She already knows the answer and when she smooths out the creases on her blood stained skirt Hildr's lip curls in disgust.

"And you. Look at you. A nurse. This is what you do now?"

No answer. There isn't one she could give that her sister-in-arms would find acceptable. There isn't one that she finds acceptable. Pride fell away in the face of survival a long time ago. Hildr shakes her head, kicking at the ground in frustration.

Once they would have been a host. Now they are two and they have no way to descend on the ruins of the battle below them and take their pick of the fallen. Valhalla doesn't exist here and the gods these men worship will not let the Valkyries pass.

"I have to go." Gondul starts to walk away. She can't take the dead but she can tend to the wounded.

"You don't have anywhere to go, Gondul."

She doesn't turn around and she never sees Hildr again.
