Four walls. No window. A paint color that was so nondescript and bland it made his eyes hurt. The phone would not stop ringing and he could see no point in picking it up. The talking heads on the other end of line had nothing of note to say. They made a lot of promises. Asked for a lot of proposals that ended up shelved due to 'budget' constraints. The stack of papers on his desk seemed to get bigger instead of smaller and that was funny because as far as Lincoln knew no one had added onto it. The reports and plans were breeding! That was stupid. Sitting here was stupid. This stuffy, cramped and all around claustrophobic feeling was stupid! It was all stupid and he should just get up right now and walk out the door and never look back and....
No. He wasn't going to do that. He had work to do. Responsibilities that were now his and no matter how much he didn't want to be here he was going to stay here. Stay and be miserable until the hands on the clock said 5 pm.
He didn't want to be here and while on a conscious level he was very aware of that fact he subconsciously fed his own misery into the road. It bleed into the asphalt, the concrete and the physical foundations of his existence. The effect was subtle, barely noticeable and not at all apparent until one realized that they hadn't come to the place they wanted to be and instead rolled right up to the one place they certainly did not want to be.
