Current mood: mystical and all-knowing

first ever order meeting? DON'T MIND IF WE DO!
Who: Evie Baker, Sirius Black, Edgar Bones, Caradoc Dearborn, Elphias Doge, Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus Dumbledore, Benjy Fenwick, Frank Longbottom, Remus Lupin, Minerva McGonagall, Marlene McKinnon, Dorcas Meadowes, Alastor Moody, James Potter, Lily Potter, Alice Prewett, Fabian Prewett, Gideon Prewett, and Jack Sinistra. ie: the desired members of the Fault Lines Order of the Phoenix as of their first meeting.
When: October 19 1978. 8 pm.
Where: Near the back of the Dominion Theatre in Camden, London.
What: The very first meeting of the Order of the Phoenix.

Whatever else, no one could accuse Albus Dumbledore of narrow-mindedness in his recruiting efforts. From old friends to near strangers, from renowned genius Unspeakables and reputed Aurors to measly interns and trainees, from 18 year old kids to, well, Albus himself, it was difficult to pin down on sight what exactly had led to the attendees of the Order of the Phoenix's first meeting earning this particular space in history. Of course, Dumbledore knew damn well what he was doing, and so did the few present who knew him well enough to gauge his motives.

He'd invited people who cared. People who were aware enough of the circumstances to be upset over them, and willing to risk a little -- or a lot -- to change them.

While Dumbledore had personally taken care of most of the security -- with the help of the owner of the Dominion Theatre, who was not the same man the paperwork credited -- Moody had aided greatly, with Dumbledore's blessings. It was Moody who was crouched in a hidden nook of the theatre's framework, watching as one by one -- or two by two, or more -- people approached. It was Moody who identified on sight every invited guest, and discreetly placed various charms on those who had not received an invitation -- nothing they'd be aware of, nothing they could feel, but certainly enough to take care of them if it turned out there was a reason Dumbledore hadn't thought to invite them along for the ride.

It was Moody, naturally, who noticed the two Hit Wizards Dorcas Meadowes had failed to notice trailing her for the past number of days, and who stunned them from afar, sending Caradoc Dearborn, a particular favourite of his, down to put them away for later.

Eventually, everyone who was going to come had come, and been directed by Marlene McKinnon down the hidden passage in the Dominion that led to a large antechamber that probably should not have been able to physically exist in the small section of the theatre it occupied. It was obviously not much used; while clean and furnished, there were no personal touches to the decoration. Albus Dumbledore looked oddly out of place in the middle of such an unremarkable room, but he usually did. He looked very friendly for a man who had just organized a secret meeting of future guerrilla rebels.

Albus sat at the side of the table opposite the entrance. He did not sit at the head, largely because the table was -- whether by Albus's design or someone else's, no one but he knew -- round. There was very little conversation as they waited for the meeting to begin, but what little there was died down after Albus cleared his throat.

There were very few people Edgar was surprised to see there. Naturally, he didn't know all of them -- he probably should have known a few more than he actually did, but sometimes Edgar was remarkably good at failing to pay attention to the world around him for a supergenius. However, most of the strange faces around him Edgar simply regarded with polite curiosity.

Jack, though. Jack was a bit perplexing. Edgar liked Jack a lot, but Edgar hadn't had any idea he'd distinguished himself to the extent that Dumbledore would take note. (The fact that Jack had been brought along by invited friends never occurred to Edgar. He hadn't even thought to bring someone with him. He'd assumed that if Dumbledore had wanted his friends there, he'd have invited them.) However, if Edgar had any misgivings about Jack's presence, he didn't show them, greeting Jack with a surprised smile and a small wave after the initial perplexed frown.

Of course, he wasn't even remotely surprised that Alice was there, and it was she and the Prewetts Edgar sat down beside, regarding the round table with no small amount of amusement.

Alice had arrived with the twins because, though none of them had intended to say anything, they all just sort of figured that if one of them had received the letter, all of them had. And since receiving the letter, all three of them had been incredibly anxious for tonight to actually happen. Upon arriving, Alice, at least, recognized everyone there, if not actually knew them and she wasn't really surprised by anyone in attendance.

Naturally, Frank would be there. Not that she'd ever admit it, nor was this the place to even be concerned by it, but Alice couldn't help but feel a little...embarrassed? confused? irritated? --she couldn't decide--after their obviously drunk conversation not three days before. She decided it best to ignore thinking about it at all. And maybe avoid eye contact.

She sat at the table beside the twins and leaned forward, resting her arms on the table and awaited the beginning of all this anxiously. She smiled and nodded to just about everyone as she watched and waited.

Dorcas being Dorcas, was very skeptical of this whole thing. She knew Dumbledore, and knew that if this were the real deal under his command, that it would be something well-organized and good-intentioned. However, being as paranoid as she was, it was difficult for her to trust anything by anyone these days. Especially being as outspoken as she always has been.

She was also worried, because if this was indeed a private and secret little organization, then it wouldn't be very beneficial to have her there. The Ministry has known of her uprisings for years now, ever since she worked there a few years ago. even before that, she was always an active teenager, and wrote articles and started petitions and protests. It wouldn't be a very coy move to have someone like her in an organization that was meant to be kept a secret. They'd trace her to it right away if they new it existed. She figured Dumbledore would make the final decision on that, though. He'd know better than she ever would. If anyone knew of Dorcas' involvement in political activities, it was Dumbledore. She had gotten in trouble for inciting more than a few protests and riots back in her school days.

As it was, she took a seat near Alice and all of them, since she was closer to Alice than most. Which wasn't saying much, considering Dorcas wasn't really close with anyone anywhere. That was a plus, if you wanted to look at it that way!

Benjy was an outsider here. Benjy was aware of that. Dumbledore was aware of that (although, if this was Dumbledore's shindig, and if Dumbledore was anything like what Benjy had him figured for from his admittedly limited experience, he wasn't about to hold it against him). Luckily, very few other people were aware of that.

He hadn't received an invitation. But Evie and Sirius had, and so, through various processes, Benjy had ended up coming here with Evie, and because Benjy had come, so had Jack, cause frankly, if there were going to be any crazy mysterious secret meetings held by near-legendary men probably to do with their evil Minister, Benjy was gonna have Jack at his side.

He settled down with Evie, regarding most of the people there warily, and winking at the couple he actually talked to (Sirius, Dorcas, et cetera).

Evie, subconsciously, was grinding her teeth as she sat warily in a large, unmarked room. She didn't know the place they were at, and she didn't know the reason why besides this odd order situation, and thus it was strange to her to see faces that she knew. People from the Ministry. Her friends. People that she usually spoke to not in an enclosed, discreet area. It worried her slightly, as her feet jangled and as she refused to get too comfortable. Auror's instincts. Gryffindor instincts. Whatever. Instincts.

This was dangerous, this was so dangerous. And if it were anyone besides Albus Dumbledore himself leading this excursion, Evie would've declined. Instead she had ended up telling Benjy and Jack and they all went together, blindly into something that Evie wasn't sure about. If they were infiltrated.. If the Ministry caught up, or worse yet if the Death Eaters knew..

Instead she just put it all aside and leaned over to Benjy, watching as he surveyed the room. "You seem pretty relaxed about this," she noted casually with her hand itching to find her wand. For a just in case moment. If it happened. Not that she doubted Dumbledore, but... just in case.

Jack felt nauseous.

Why?

Because Jack didn't want to fucking be here, but he really wanted to fucking be here.

For some reason, logic (or irrationality, which sometimes won over Jack's indomitable logic when involving strangers or large numbers of friends and acquaintances) dictated to Jack that he should not look anyone in the eye when he entered the room, so he wasn't. But to make doubly sure that awkward glances would not occur, he was wearing sunglasses and had been for a few hours now (it was somehow comforting). He followed behind Benjy quietly, hands pocketed, and sat, crossing his arms over his chest and one leg over the other in an effort to protect himself against... whatever harm it was he thought these people might bring down upon him in the form of venomous words and stares. A curt nod at Evie, once he was sitting, was the only indication that he even knew where the fuck he was.

Only then did he remove his shades.

Frank was a shit-disturber. This was probably why, when he saw That Weird Bloke From The Department Of Mysteries Who Edgar Liked So Much come in behind That Loudmouth Reporter Frank Had Gotten Ridiculously Drunk With And Ended Up Getting A Black Eye From and Evie Baker (who was hot, and a lesbian, and thus could have had a lot said about her, but Frank also knew she was a good Auror and had a good shot at kicking his ass, so she got his respect), all shrug-shouldered in sunglasses, he couldn't help but start to grin where he sat not far from Dumbledore, fingers resting against his teeth as he watched Jack sit down like he was some kind of strange bird.

When Jack took his sunglasses off, he glared at Frank. This was probably because Frank had been staring at him without stop. Cheerfully, Frank gave him a quick nod and a curt salute, peripherally aware that he was acting a bit immaturely in front of Dumbledore, but, to be fair, acting up a lot less than he wanted to. This entire situation was making him nervous. Like Evie, he couldn't help but wonder who might be watching without their noticing.

Jack recognised the face. If this were the company he would be keeping in this place, he'd rather lay down and die at the foot of the meanest, biggest Death Eater than endure Frank Bloody Longbottom. There were a slew of retorts swirling about in his head that he wanted to shout out, but the pressure of the situation kept him from acting out of line. He settled for a sneer.

Leaning forward, he whispered in Benjy's ear, "I didn't know Longbottom was going to be here."

Benjy also recognized Frank's face. The difference being, Benjy had largely moved past the many dramas of their teen years, and no longer held grudges for things that had happened a decade ago. True, he was a bit biased in the case of Frank Longbottom, whose arse he kicked rather than was kicked by following some animosity between Jack and Frank, but he would have liked to've thought that even if he ran into somebody who'd beat the crap out of him, he'd still be able to handle it pretty well.

"I didn't know most of these people were going to be here," Benjy replied equally quietly. "So?"

As he shuffled into the cinema with a yellow legal pad pressed flush between his upper arm and the soft cashmere blend of his sweater, following Sirius, James and Lily with Peter at his heels, it was immediately evident to all present that Remus J. Lupin was very concerned. And though "concerned" was by no means an unusual state of being for Remus, this concern was rather different from his normal levels thereof. After all, it was not everyday that you got a very unusual owl from your old headmaster asking you to meet him in an old theatre in Camden, and though the things Dumbledore did often seemed more than a bit mad, there was always good reason for them.

Though he was initially reluctant to share his letter with his friends, for fear that this would be yet another instance of Remus violating Dumbledore's trust in some way, when James and Sirius both produced similar letters, he had presented his own for comparison. And now, here they were, standing awkwardly in the back of a theatre in Camden. This was strange, wasn't it? Remus couldn't help but wonder this to himself as he glanced up at professor Dumbledore, looking older than Remus had ever seen him, but with a familiar glint in his blue eyes. Of course, they'd speculated about the purpose of the meeting for hours on end, but they'd still come up with nothing conclusive. All he felt certain of was that it wouldn't be good.

It was, Dumbledore judged, about time to begin. Everyone who was going to arrive had arrived, and there was really no good in letting them all stew in their own nerves any longer.

He glanced almost imperceptibly at Jack. Really no good.

"I trust you are all wondering why you've been invited here tonight," he began, speaking in a slow, calm voice with his fingers steepled in front of him. He glanced at Moody, who had just re-entered the room with Caradoc. "Alastor, I trust all is well?"

"Nobody's watching," Moody replied, looking at Dorcas.

"Good." Dumbledore cleared his throat.

"As you are all well aware, our newest Minister for Magic is Bellatrix Lestrange," Dumbledore began. "Furthermore, as I am confident you are also all aware, this does not bode well for any of us. Bellatrix has always been firmly in support of purist ideology, and, while we do not have the proof to bring formal charges against her, I do not feel uncomfortable in saying I am absolutely confident she is dedicated servant of Voldemort's." He ignored the various reflexes the name inspired in numerous of those seated around the table. "Her election to this position is an indication that Voldemort has, albeit covertly, gained the Ministry."

He paused, relaxing his fingers and resting his hands on the table, taking a moment to look around the table for any immediate objections. When none raised up quickly enough, he continued.

"It is my belief that we are incapable of defeating Voldemort through legitimate means alone. This was true before Bellatrix's election, and it is even more so now. Bellatrix has the ability to shut down any effective measure within the Ministry being used to fight Voldemort. If she so pleased, she could remove the Auror department. I do not believe she will, because her hold on her subjects is as yet too tenuous, but it is within her power. If Voldemort so pleased, he could provide Bellatrix with a list of his known enemies and order her to present false charges against them and condemn them all to the Dementor's Kiss.

"At this time, I do not believe it is in his best interests to do so. However, two months ago I would not have believed he was capable of convincing the highest democratic authority in Wizarding Britain to elect Bellatrix Lestrange as the Minister for Magic. Clearly, these things have a habit of changing.

"So, I propose to all of you a new method of combat. The Order of the Phoenix has been planned out by myself and many of the other people in this room since Bellatrix's election. Some of you may have unintentionally helped its formation in unrelated conversations with us. Voldemort is not only using his legitimate means -- the Ministry -- to attack us. His most effective weapons are his Death Eaters. As such, it has been foolish of us to go this long using only legitimate means to fight him, and this foolishness will stop. The Order of the Phoenix will combat the Death Eaters secretly, by collecting information on their activities, planning ways to foil them, and carrying through these plans at great personal risk. Should you choose to participate, you will be putting yourself in very high danger, along with those you love. However, it is my belief that by allowing Voldemort to continue his campaign unimpeded, you are condemning yourself and your loved ones to far worse fates.

"If you would like to hear no more, speak now. Alastor and Caradoc will see to it that your memory of tonight will be removed -- for your safety as much as for ours -- and you will be sent on your way. If anyone has any initial questions, now would be the time to voice them."

When no complaints were voiced, Dumbledore nodded once.

"It is a strength and a weakness both of the Death Eaters that they are not made aware of the identities of the vast majority of their cohorts. While this makes information leaks upon capture a near impossibility, it also decreases a sense of belonging and togetherness. This is fitting for a society based around fear and violence.

"Some of you may have heard of the paper Edgar wrote on the subject," Dumbledore continued without any change in tone of voice. "He argued -- and I suspect others would have also, were there an adequate-sized body of research and intellectual discussion on the Death Eaters -- that our sense of fighting Voldemort together is one of our greatest assets. The bonds displayed in the Auror and Hit Wizarding departments in particular have led to some incredible feats in the fight against Dark Wizards.

"As such, I believe it would be prudent to undergo a brief introduction of each of you, so that no one is left wondering who all the strangers at the table are. I think it would be best if each of us did this individually, on our own parts. My name is Albus, and most of you will know me as the present Headmaster of Hogwarts. I also serve on the Wizengamot, and, as you may have surmised, was not in the favour of the motion to make Bellatrix Lestrange Minister. Alastor, if you could continue?"

Moody didn't do group bonding. It was largely unsurprising, but perhaps less encouraging than would have been preferred, when Moody scrunched his lips up in front of his teeth in a motion that sometimes precedes spitting before saying, "Alastor Moody, Auror."

Edgar was still reeling from Dumbledore's mentioning his own scattered ramblings -- well, 'paper,' fine -- when it became his turn to speak. Starting suddenly with the familiar motion of An Edgar Who Has Been Torn From The Important Business Of His Own Mind, Edgar nodded once curtly and swallowed before speaking.

"Well, yes, I'm Edgar, er, Bones, as you might have heard, and I mean I did write a paper but really it was all a bit bollocks -- I mean I agree with you but the paper itself -- well, anyway, I'm Edgar, I'm an Unspeakable, and I frequently write papers full of bollocks, although rarely actually about them, not that I would hold it against someone if that was their chosen field of study," Edgar finished, trying not to notice that across the table, Professor McGonagall's lips had gone thin (she still scared the hell out of him). "Er, Alice?"

Despite the satisfaction, determination, pride, and yes the little nerves, Alice was feeling at Dumbledore's proposition, she knew Edgar far too well for her own good at the moment. It took all she had not to laugh at his absolute glee that Dumbledore had spoken of his paper. Admittedly, she was incredibly proud of him and pleased that Dumbledore had read it and agreed, but Edgar was being more socially awkward than usual due to his overwhelming happiness. And it was hilarious.

As it was, she squeezed his hand lightly and smiled before clasping her hands loosely together under her chin. "Um, well, I'm Alice Prewett--Auror as well, 2 years out of training..." She sort of half-shrugged, not sure what else to say and looked pointedly at Dorcas.

"Dorcas Meadowes," she announced, taking cue from Alice's look, "Ex-Ministry employee, current baker."

Dorcas typically enjoyed public speaking, but she hated introductions. Plus, in a room such as this one, it wasn't as if any of these people needed any persuading to join her cause or anything.

The twins looked at each other and nodded. " 'm Gideon Prewett. Auror."

"Fabian Prewett. Also, Auror."

The two sat back in their chairs, arms loosely crossed over their chests, watching for the next up to introduce themselves.

It seemed like a long moment had passed since anyone had spoken. A long moment that had the potential to become an awkward silence at any moment - in fact, it was threatening to become one if someone didn't say something immediately. Remus looked at his friends in an inquiring manner, as if to ask if they were going to speak, or if he had to. Bugger.

"Um-" Remus said a little too quickly, abruptly like a note that's played just a moment too soon on the wrong beat, "I'm Remus Lupin, historical researcher and part-time bookshop employee." Well, and disenfranchised werewolf, but that wasn't the sort of thing one brought up in a meeting such as this.
