Who: Melinda and Marcus
What: Picking up sweets
Where: Sweet Nothings
When: Sunday, September 7, around noon
Rating: Most likely SFW

Sunday morning came either far too quickly, or not nearly fast enough - Marcus wasn't sure which, since his opinion on the fact seemed to swing back and forth between the two every few minutes. On the one hand, he hadn't slept well the night before, so it seemed cruel that the sun was peaking into his window in such a way that indicated that it was time for him to get up. But alternatively, the arrival of the morning meant that he could get on with actually feeling as though he was doing something about the things that had kept him awake the night before, so he'd eaten a very quick breakfast, showered and dressed before getting out of his flat.

At three minutes after noon, Marcus found himself standing outside of Sweet Nothings, feeling slightly awkward. Even though Roger had specifically asked him to do this, and Melinda herself had implied that it wasn't a problem, he still felt as though he was making someone else go out of their way for him, something he really wasn't a fan of doing. But he was here now, and it would be silly to not follow through on his reasons for coming in the first place.

Adjusting the bag on his arm that contained the things he'd already picked up, Marcus knocked lightly on the front door to the shop, right beneath the sign that read 'Closed', trying not to feel any more guilty about it than he already did.

Melinda wasn’t really certain exactly what time it had been, when she had arrived at Oliver’s flat last night – or possibly this morning. What she did know, was that the shots Ben had served had been plenty, the drinks hadn’t been limited either and the dancing… oh, the dancing had been spectacular, and just like she had told Oliver; she would come over when her feet felt about to fall off. And it had been wonderful seeing him again, and amazing and sloppy and extremely satisfying, especially just curling up with him afterwards and going to sleep.

Of course, the morning hadn’t been nearly as fun, though she had been grateful for the lack of windows, and close to declaring her undying love for the spectacular man that Oliver was, when he had brought her a potion for her hangover. It didn’t take all of the discomfort away, but at least it kept the rustling sheets from sounding like the Hogwarts Express colliding with the platform. She could have easily spent the rest of the day right there with him. But Roger had been injured and she had prepared a care-package for him that Marcus was picking up, so rather than having a lie-in in his flat, they had gone to her place, where they had showered, and though Melinda hadn’t put on her work-clothes she had dressed more decently than the t-shirt she had borrowed from Oliver and nothing else.

She had gone down to the shop just before noon, not wanting to leave Marcus waiting. He was going out of his way to come by the shop, and though Melinda could just as easily have Owled the sweets to Roger herself, it also gave her a chance to see what type of man Marcus was. His knock came just as she was closing the lid of the box with an assortment of Roger’s favourite pastries that were being kept fresh by a stasis charm, the fresh fruit safely in a liquid tight container to keep them from soaking the bread. Without even thinking, other than the man on the other side of the door was a man who was making Roger happy, Melinda smiled brightly at him as she opened the door for him.

“Marcus,” she greeted him, gesturing for him to come inside. “I was just packing up the last of the package. How are you today?” Her smile was bright, sure, but there were still traces of dark under her eyes and she did move slightly sluggishly; those hangovers were biting back hard today.

The door opened almost immediately, and Marcus offered Melinda a polite smile. "Melinda," he returned the greeting with a slight nod of his head as he followed her into the shop, making sure to shut the door behind him. The inside of the store smelled pretty amazing, in his opinion, especially since he could see the concoctions all around him. It was a little bit of a struggle to remained focused on what he was actually here for and not get distracted by the temptations around him.

"I'm doing well, thank you for asking," he responded cordially. It wasn't exactly true, but that wasn't the sort of thing that was said in polite conversation, particularly with someone who was, for all intents and purposes, a stranger. "And yourself?"

"As I mention previously, I do appreciate the time you've taken to do this for Roger," he said, feeling as though he needed to express his gratitude in person.

He was polite! As big and as ruthless as he seemed on a broom, Melinda was pleasantly surprised to find that the politeness Marcus had expressed on the journals translated into real life. Of course she wouldn’t have minded if he didn’t seem as tense as he did, because she really did want to give him a fair chance and not discredit him based solely on his name and past. “Not too bad myself, either,” she smiled at him – bending the truth only the tiniest of bits – and went back behind the counter again.

“Actually,” Melinda said as she transferred the mud cake – one of Roger’s favourites and today decorated with an intricate pattern of chocolate icing filigree – to the box, “I’m the one who should be thanking you.” She glanced up at him, before she looked down to make sure that she got the lid closed properly. “Roger’s a dear friend, and I appreciate you’re spending with him today, not to mention making a detour to come here. That’s…” Clearing her throat, she set the box aside and looked at Marcus for maybe a beat too long as she tried to estimate what it was about him that made his appreciation for what she was doing seem more personal than just friendly concern for Roger.

“I only heard the post-match recap,” she confessed and wiped her hands on a clean napkin. “And of course Roger’s very downplayed version, but what happened?” Marcus, she knew, would be certain to know this, at least she thought he would, but there was just… something. And she wanted desperately to be able to put her finger on it.

There seemed to be something in Melinda's tone that sat in the silence, waiting to be acknowledged, though Marcus wasn't sure he wanted to know what was being questioned, or even implied. Rather than speak right away, he met Melinda's gaze levelly, and let the silence stretch for a moment before answering, "It's the least I can do."

He couldn't quite hold back a sigh at Melinda's next words, though it was directed at the fact that even she knew that Roger was acting as though he hadn't gotten seriously injured. "About two hours in, I managed to greatly upset the opposing side's Beater by breaking up the Chaser's formation," he began explaining, trying to keep his tone as level as he could. "He decided to retaliate by throwing his bat." Marcus shook his head a little as he recalled it, saying, "The worst part is, I saw it coming. And if Roger hadn't gotten in the way, I probably would have had a dislocated shoulder, the most. Instead, he got hit full on, and the force of the impact made him fall off his broom and hit the ground."

He knew that there was nothing to be done about it now, but Marcus could feel an echoing of the anger that that raced through him at he moment it had happened, the gut-wrenching fear at seeing Roger fall. Taking a deep breath, he asked, "What did he tell you happened?"

Though Melinda was still working with the boxes, filling and arranging the contents so they would fit the best, she was listening intently to what Marcus was telling her. She stopped for a moment, when he said that Roger had gotten in the way. Knowing Roger and knowing how Roger felt about Marcus, Melinda didn’t for one minute think that it had been an accident that Roger was ‘in the way’, and that had her shaking her head, muttering something about Roger and Gryffindor tendencies. With a sigh, she shook her head again, shocked to hear what had actually happened. “That man cares more about y-his friends than he does about himself,” she said, hoping that she had caught the ‘you’ that had been on the tip of her tongue. She knew how Roger felt about the man in front of her, but she didn’t know if Marcus knew or how he felt about it, although given the fact that he was stopping by here made her think that at least he thought friendly of Roger.

“Well,” she said and placed the two boxes on the counter; they were all packed and ready. “You saw what he wrote in his journal, right?” Melinda nodded as if saying ‘that’s what he told me’. “And then there was a small warded note where the phrase ‘totally fine’ appeared again, and then he went on to talking about how Cho and I should still go dancing and the usual Roger teasing about dating and boyfriends, that sort of thing. He really played it down.”

Marcus just shook his head at Melinda's comment, and said, "That's not an excuse to not take precautions though." Even now it was difficult to stomach the idea that Roger was suffering from an injury meant for him.

Not having heard the near slip up, he commented, "He's just lucky it wasn't worse." After all, the man in question was at home rather than still sequestered in St. Mungo's, which had to count for something in the overall scheme of things. "And we're lucky that he'll still be able to play once he recovers." Because Salazar knew that the last thing the team - and Marcus personally, if he were being honest - needed was to have to get used to a different player, even this early in the season.

He didn't bother trying to stop the roll of his eyes at Melinda's answer, muttering, "Why am I not surprised."

“Oh, I agree,” Melinda chuckled, holding up both hands in surrender, because… Marcus was right. While it was admirable for Roger to try and protect those he cared about, he still needed to find that balance between putting himself in more danger than what he was trying to protect someone from.

Roger had been lucky that it wasn’t worse, as was Appleby, but Melinda couldn’t help but thinking that if it really was as serious as Marcus had said – and she had no reason not to believe him – then they were lucky to have not lost a friend yesterday. “I’m glad to hear that,” she told Marcus with a small smile, because she didn’t think he was thinking only of Appleby when it came to Roger, but now wasn’t the time to prod for that.

Marcus’ roll of his eyes had Melinda’s smile brighten as she nodded. “Because you’ve met him? Because you know him?” she suggested, though she knew very well why it didn’t surprise him: that was just what Roger did. “So, I think the boxes are ready, except… Do you drink coffee or tea?”

It really wasn't at all surprising that Roger had made his injury sound as though it was less serious than it actually was. Offering Melinda a smile at her observation, Marcus answered, "I suppose you make a valid point."

A little surprised by her offer, Marcus admitted, "Coffee is a rare indulgence for me, and I'd hate to put you out of your way, especially seeing as you're technically closed today." He gave her another small smile as he continued, "I do appreciate the offer though."

Marcus had a nice smile, Melinda found. True, it was a small smile, but it changed his face and she could see what had attracted Roger to him – physically, at least, although he had been nothing but polite with her.

“It wouldn’t be out of my way,” she assured him as she reached under the counter for a small jar. “However, I was going to throw in some tea with the package to make sure that Roger wouldn’t go wandering if he ran out, and…” She turned away for a moment to get a small foil bag from the shelf behind her. “Since there’ll be cake, I thought I’d make sure that there’d be coffee too, if that’s what you preferred.” Holding up the small bag to show him, she added to the pile of two boxes and the jar of tea. “I think this is it, and I think that Roger may be about to climb the walls from lack of company. Thank you, again, for doing this, Marcus.”

"You're too kind," Marcus told her, though he didn't refuse the extra bag, because not only would it be rude, but he didn't want to risk alienating a friend of Roger's.

Gathering up the things that Melinda had provided, he moved towards the door to take his leave. "Thank you, for everything," he said cordially. "I think it's about time I go and make sure he hasn't done anything ridiculous to cure his boredom."

With a chuckle, Melinda nodded; Marcus, apparently, had Roger pegged spot-on. “Sounds like a wise idea,” she agreed. “It was a pleasure meeting you. Give Roger my best and have a good day yourself.”

Meeting Marcus, putting a bit of personality to a face that she barely knew though had heard a lot about, was nice, and Melinda was beginning to think that maybe Roger wasn’t as perceptive about the other man as she had thought him to be. Sure, they were team mates and friends, but there was something else, and she got the impression that it was positive. That speculation, however, would have to wait until later. For now, she had a hangover to nurse and a boyfriend to hide away from the world with.
