Addie was exhausted. No more shopping to be done, no more cooking or cleaning. She didn't mind these things, of course, but there was only so much a girl could do in one day before the urge to run around like a headless chicken overtook her. As amusing as it might be, Addie had another way she would prefer to spend the downtime before the madness that was Christmas day. Which put another smile on her face. She couldn't begin to describe how pleased it made her that the MacFusties had invited her to their Christmas, and it was the first time she'd spend only half the day with her family and half with her boyfriend's. Her smile turned megawatt when she came out of the kitchen and spotted him near the tree. She wiped her hands on a towel, then tossed it on the counter before heading over to him. Addie slipped her arms around his waist from behind. "You know what I love best about this Christmas?" Boyd reached for the nearest record of the few he'd unwrapped all of moments ago, waving it as he turned around just enough to see Addie out of the corner of his eye. "ABBA?" he asked. And how in Merlin's bloody sodding name he wasn't presently splitting at the sides from trying to hold a secret about his one last gift to her, he had no idea. It was Christmas Eve at his girlfriend's place, Asta was fussing about in some of the discarded reddish and greenish paper, and without Meredith or Greta around, it was perfect. You know... it was nothing meant against the pair of them, but -- he reached an arm backward, hooking Addie and tugging her around to his front -- there was only one girl in the whole of the galaxy that Boyd wanted to be in the company of. Grinning far too much that it seemed like his face could barely frame the full smile, he knew he had that one girl right here in his arms. Strike up the angelic chorus and all that rubbish if anyone needed a further visual, but Boyd knew it wouldn't matter a single damn what all was happening around them. Simply put: he wasn't madly in love with the scenery or any possible cameo by some plucky winged lad with a harp. Actually, come to dwell on it for a tick, maybe that's why he wasn't even nervous. The jitters? Just from waiting for the right moment. ...And it was starting to feel like that exact thing was drawing up quick. He'd had that tiny box in his pocket ready the whole time, and it was an easily hidden move to fish it out. Easy, likely, because as he pulled her around, he'd met her half-spin with a kiss. By the time it was broken off, the box was securely in his hands, and behind her back. "I'll have you know that if you have ABBA at your house, there will be dancing in knickers. Tiny knickers," Addie pointed out with a grin. Her present hadn't been as expensive or thought as she'd wished it could have been. But she felt a used record player and several albums - including the aforementioned ABBA, but also Queen and T-Rex - wasn't a bad gift. He didn't have a way to play any Queen, and she needed the new ABBA. It was a win/win situation. Addie had a few other things to give him at their families' Christmas dinners the next day, but this was too unwieldy to lug around all day. That and she didn't fancy having to decide where he should open it so it was done at the cottage on Christmas Eve. She shouldn't have been caught off-guard by the sudden spin, the kiss, or the Joker-sized smile on Boyd's face, but she was. She squeaked when she lost her control on her body, grinned in return. Her feet were caught in a tangle, fingers clutching onto him. "If you drop me, so help me Merlin, I will take back the record player and leave you with just unplayable records," she warned unsuccessfully. They both knew her threat was just lip service. "And I'm positively hurt that you would suggest that ABBA is the best part of my Christmas!" The grin didn't fade one bit, but it couldn't possibly grow any larger than it was on Boyd's face, either. He tugged her nearer to make certain she didn't fall -- wasn't in the plans to drop Addie on the floor and then ask her, after all, because somehow that didn't have the proper romantic effect -- and gave her quirked-brow. "I got ye, I got ye," he assured her. That small box was still clutched tightly in one hand, though. Once she found some balance that he could let her go without disastrous results, he'd just have to flip that top open, and then... well... "An' I've been thinkin' that maybe there's one more gift I've got -- before ye go makin' any calls 'bout what the best part was." Addie wrangled her feet into something like poise (eventually) as she struggled to right herself. Though there wasn't any real danger of falling on the ground, you just never knew with Boyd MacFusty. He could get his feet tangled up in the worst way without a single obstruction. She smoothed down her shirt as she straightened, glancing up at him from beneath her blonde hair. "What are you going on about, Boyd? Presents have already been all doled out!" Except for the few she had to give him tomorrow, at least. "Yeah, but no' all of 'em," Boyd countered, grin shifting into an off-kilter smile. She had no idea this was coming, and it wasn't that he was trying to draw out the suspense, but as he attempted to work the ring's box open, it suddenly decided that wasn't going to cooperate. He leaned in, mostly out of trying to make room to work the damned little latch keeping the box shut, and it wasn't too hard to pass it off as a tightened embra -- The latch flipped up, and in a heart-freezing moment, Boyd lost his grip in the momentum his fingers still had from prying. Addie would undoubtedly know something was up from the way he closed the distance between them to save the ring, but it was something metallic clinking off the floor that pooled the colour from his face. "Oh, fuck." "Boyd! What are -" Clearly, Boyd was up to something, and the sound of something hitting the floor didn't escape her notice. She twisted around the best she could caught up in her boyfriend's arms and against his chest. He'd nearly knocked her off her feet that time, though, and her fingers automatically latched onto the back of his sweater. "Nothin'!" he too quickly replied for the word to have been believable. A hand had swiped out just in time, finding the sofa's arm and keeping them both somewhat standing, even if not entirely straight. Really, the fact that feet were still on the ground -- only feet -- was a small miracle. Boyd flashed Addie an apologetic smile as he collected his balance back and gently coaxed her hands off him. "Think I dropped somethin'." He leaned around her, hoping that it would be as easy as seeing the silver of the ring on the floor and only having to pick it up. No silver. Nothing. His heart plummeted down into the recesses of his gut. "Just... just stay righ' here, yeah?" Before he even finished he was already ducking to look beneath the tree. Asta padded over to shove a nose into his hair, which truly didn't help much. "Stay right here and do what? Not move?" Addie had never been particularly good at listening and following directions. she dropped immediately to her haunches beside Boyd, tilting her head to look around aimlessly. "I can help! What am I looking for?" Her fingers reached out and plucked the tree's skirt up but with several presents still stacked on top of it, that was mostly useless. Instead, she took the first box and moved it discreetly to the couch. "It can't be too big, otherwise you wouldn't be squinting." "Nah, I can --" A small shower of needles fell on Boyd as he lifted his head (into a low-hanging branch) and turned to see Addie joining him. Naturally, he had to slap a hand up, shielding his eyes from any further abuse. "Er -- just... nrrgh." Well, there wouldn't be any telling her to have a seat and watch him wave his rear end in the air while he searched, but if he thought he heard it land over here, then all he had to do was find it first and all would be fine. "Sorta small. Shiny." Employing new and slightly frantic tactics, he reached his hands out, sweeping the floor with them. One hand struck something sorta small and shiny, and he blinked away the sting in his eyes just in time to see that something s. s. & s. being slid straight... To Addie's feet. "OH!" Not quite catching sight of what it was, Addie's hand smacked right over the glint in an attempt to stop it from bouncing off her shoe and heading to God knew where. Her fingers closed around it, cupping it against her rubber sole before scooping it up. "Got it! Oh, it's quite small. Nothing sorta about it." ...and that was when she opened her hand and actually saw what was in it. What she'd been expecting, Adelaide didn't quite know. A pair of earrings. A necklace. Maybe even a ring that wasn't this sort of ring. It felt like her heart had stopped pumping for a few seconds as she stared down at it, but the moment she looked into Boyd's eyes (accompanied by a stunned look), it immediately started up again like a jack-hammer. She didn't comment on it, though. Only blinked as she extended her hand out for him. Withdrawing himself from the tree was a messy affair, but after being smacked between the eyes by a glass bulb hanging off the lower portion of the tree, Boyd managed to free himself. He self-consciously ran a hand through his hair (needles falling to the ground around him) as he watched Addie look upon her find. This definitely wasn't the way he meant for it to go, but he reached out, taking the ring back with a hapless half-smile. "Thanks." Deep breath. All right, she was looking blankly at him, but that wasn't a bad thing, was it? "Kinda blew the... surprise here," he started again, willing himself to not fidget with the ring; with his luck, he would drop it again. There was a short pause of quiet in which Boyd had the thought that he'd better get on one knee before continuing, but, oddly enough, he'd looked down to find himself already there because of the way he'd shifted back from the Christmas tree. With a modest shrug and a strengthening grin, then, he raised the ring to her. "So, want to get married?" Torn between a face-splitting grin, silent laughter, and bloody tears in her eyes, Addie found that - for once in her life - she couldn't speak. A few seconds of trying to jump-start her vocal chords produced nothing but a raspy croak, and so she began to rapidly nod her head up and down as she mouthed, "Yes!" That accomplished, she swiped at her face when she felt warmth trickling down her face, and then feeling ridiculous for getting so emotional about it, she started laughing at herself. Boyd had been similarly caught up in a mix of reactions, but instead of splitting it three ways, he'd merely remained rooted to the spot, smiling a great, big stupid smile at her. It went on for a solid few ticks before he shook himself back to his senses. "Oh. Sorry --" He reached for her hand, slipping the ring on before his clumsy nature caught on that it hadn't struck for the last few minutes. "There," he said, although his eyes hadn't lingered on the ring for more than a second when they'd rather be looking at her. Even with tears streaming down Addie's face and that mix of a grin and laughter crinkling her nose up, Boyd wouldn't hear a thing about her not being the most beautiful girl and the smartest and the cleverest and the... well, sum it all up and he'd known she was the only one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. No argument whatsoever. And if that wasn't the perfect moment to nix the space between them, pull her in tightly, and kiss her, then he didn't know what it was. Because he'd done just that. |
