Who: Harry and Ginny [Open to reactions from Weasleys and guests]
What: A Thing happened
Where: The Burrow
When: Sunday Brunch
For once, Sunday brunch was peaceful. With Percy not there and Ron still recovering, Ginny was free to be herself, not having to worry about ignoring someone for fear of flying off the handle. It was nice to just be with her family. Still, when Harry wanted to go outside for a bit, she was more than happy to say yes. Even with part of the family missing, there were still a lot of Weasleys in the house, and Ginny didn’t mind the break.
Her hand in his, leaning on his arm, they headed out into the gnome garden. "Thank you," she said, bringing her other hand up to hold onto his arm. "For coming today, for getting me out of the house. Thank you."
---
All through brunch, Harry had felt like the ring was burning a hole through his trouser pocket. He had gotten through the meal with just a touch of awkwardness. Her parents and Ron knew what was going to happen, and he had to fight the urge to go out into the garden to check on the decorations.
What he was going to say was. And really...he had no idea what he was going to say. He knew he had words planned out, but he also knew the very high likelihood of those words completely flying out the window.
“Well, I figured a walk would be nice, before we have to go deal with all of them again. Just a small break, you know?” When they entered the garden, he let out a sigh of relief as he took in the sight of hundreds of yellow daisies came into view, something that had certainly not been there this morning.
---
"Mmm you're very smart sometimes," she said with a grin, turning her head to kiss his cheek. She always felt better when he was around, especially at family functions.
When they walked into the garden, Ginny gasped, moving her hand from his arm straight to her mouth. "Harry," she said softly, looking all around them. So many flowers. Flowers everywhere, all bright and yellow and happy and everywhere.
Her hand falling to her chest, she turned and looked at him. "Did you do this?"
---
“Only sometimes?” His own grin appeared as she gasped, and his eyes stayed glued to her as she looked at all the flowers.
Harry lead her over to a bench that was tucked amongst the flowers. He took a seat next to her, though on the edge, because he knew he would be getting down on one knee soon.
“I just- I wanted to make you happy, you know? I know that this past month or so has kind of sucked, with the whole… Yeah. So, I just wanted to surprise you,” he started, biting his lip softly. “I love you, Ginny. I’d do anything to make you happy.”
---
Biting her lip, Ginny let him lead her over to the bench. She was beginning to get some sort of an idea about what he was up to, but she didn't dare jump to conclusions. For all she knew, it was just a sweet romantic gesture to raise her spirits after everything that had happened.
She blushed as he spoke, and gave his hand a squeeze. "You do make me happy, Harry," she said. "I've never been happier, and it's all because of you. I love you too. And this… this is perfect."
---
“I’m glad you think so. I honestly didn’t feel like it was enough,” he admitted, ignoring the slight blush he could feel on his cheeks. His free hand slipped into his pocket, gripping the ring box tightly. He could count on one hand the number of times he had been this nervous. Despite knowing that she would (probably) say yes… It was a lot of pressure.
Harry kept his eyes on hers as he eased onto one knee, a nervous smile on his lips. “I- Believe it or not, I had a speech. But I sort of knew I would forget it all. I wanted this to be perfect though, because it’s what you deserve. I want you to know that I will never stop working to try to get you everything you deserve, Gin. I’ll never stop trying to show you everything you mean to me,” he paused, and opened the box to reveal the ring. “That is, if you’ll say yes?”
---
Dropping his hand when he went down on his knee, Ginny clasped hers together against her chest. She was right. It was happening. Sooner than she'd expected, but he was proposing! "Oh my god," she breathed, then smiled at his speech. He was so kind, and he loved her so much, and she had known for a long time that he was going to be the one she spent the rest of her life with. He didn't have to do any of this to get her to say yes.
When he opened the box, her eyes grew wide. The ring was perfect. It was simple, but unique, and exactly what she would have chosen. "Harry," she began, holding out her left hand for him. "Of course it's a yes!"
---
Harry slipped the ring on to her finger, unable to shake the feeling of relief. Despite knowing she would say yes, it was still a terrifying thing to do. But what he was feeling now? The relief and happiness, knowing he was going to spend the rest of his life with Ginny? That was the best feeling ever.
Once the ring was on her finger, and it immediately shrunk to fit her comfortably, he leaned up and pressed his lips to hers in a searing kiss.
“I love you. I love you so much, Gin.” Harry let his forehead rest against hers, a grin pulling at his lips. “Your parents are probably straining to see out the window, but I wanted this to just be us, you know?”
---
She managed to hold it together while he was putting the ring on her finger, but as soon as it shrunk to fit her, she squealed and wrapped her arms around his shoulders, kissing him back. It was real. There was a ring and it was on her finger and she was going to marry Harry Potter.
Ginny Potter had a really nice ring to it, she thought.
"I love you too," she said, feeling a prickle in the corners of her eyes, a sure sign of coming years, but she didn't care. She just got engaged! The greatest thing just happened to her and she would cry with joy if she wanted to.
She laughed a little at his next words. "Did they know?" She asked. "Did everyone know?"
---
He felt like his face was going to split in two, the way he was smiling. It made his cheeks hurt, but he couldn’t stop. Didn’t want to stop. He was going to marry Ginny, and they were going to be a family. It was all he wanted.
Harry shook his head, his forehead still resting against hers. “No, just your parents and Ron. Well, and Hermione. Everyone else has no idea. I thought it would be a nice little surprise, and if your whole family knew, someone was going to blow it,” he said, laughing a little. Not to mention that, well, half of the Weasleys weren’t talking to each other. But still, the little looks from Mr. and Mrs. Weasley had been enough to make him paranoid about Ginny figuring it out.
---
She laughed lightly and rolled her eyes. "So that explains why Mum wouldn't leave my hair alone when we got here. I should have known something was up."
Moving her hand to his cheek, Ginny grinned and kissed him again. "We're going to get married," he said when their lips parted, not being able to hide the giggle in her voice. "We're actually going to get married!"
---
Harry laughed too, and shook his head slightly. All that mattered was that she liked the way he proposed, that he had done it. “Would you have ever guessed this, though? Even if you knew something was going on.”
He kissed her back, a smile still on his face. “Of course we’re going to get married. We’re going to be together for the rest of our lives,” he pointed out, a touch of awe coloring his voice. “I’m so lucky to have you, Gin.”
---
"No, I wouldn't have," she said, then placed her hands on his arms and tugged gently. "Here, you don't need to crouch. Get up here with me," she said, gesturing to the seat next to her.
Once he was up on the bench, she scooted close to him, turning to drape her legs over his own. "I'm the lucky one," she said softly, looking down at the ring on her finger. It really was perfect, and sparkled just the right amount.
"And all this is perfect, really Harry. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way."
---
Harry moved onto the bench, his hand immediately dropping to rest on Ginny’s thigh. They could get away with staying out here for a little bit longer before they went in and told everyone. He just wanted to enjoy this time with his fiancee.
“How long do you think we can stay out here? There’s going to be so much activity and questions back in there.”
---
"I'd say we have a few minutes before Mum comes hunting us down," she smiled. Leaning in, she kissed him again, deeper this time.
She scooted over so she was sitting properly in his lap. When she pulled out of the kiss, she laid her head on his shoulder, her hand settled on his chest. "We have to decide when we're going to tell everyone," she said. "Not just my family. I mean friends and the world. The Boy Who Lived getting married? The press will be all over that."
---
As they kissed, Harry let his hand delve into Ginny’s hair, deepening the kiss briefly. As much as he would have liked to celebrate properly… He pulled himself back, his hands dropping to Ginny’s waist as she sat in his lap.
He made a humming noise and nodded. What he wouldn’t give to just fade into obscurity. “If we can, I’d say give it a few days? Just so that we’re not bombarded or anything. A few days just to ourselves should be do-able.”
---
"Okay," she grinned, nuzzling into his neck a bit. "We can wait a few days. I won't wear the ring to practice, but I would like to tell Ronnie and Hestia. And Hermione, obviously, but I know she already knows."
Catching sight of her ring against, on the hand that laid on his chest, Ginny grinned widely. Pressing a kiss to his neck, she moved her lips up until they touched right under his ear. "You did very well," she whispered. "So you'll get a special thank you when we get back."
---
Harry bit his lip when she mentioned Ronnie and Hestia. Should he tell her they already knew? Probably. “They know. I wanted another opinion of the ring. They’re the only ones though, and I’m sure they would much rather see the ring on you than in a box,” he said in a rush, wincing slightly. It had seemed like a good idea at the time.
He chuckled and kissed her cheek, his eyes closing briefly. “Looking forward to it.” His hands trailed lightly over her sides before he paused. “We...should probably go back inside before I get carried away.”
---
Narrowing her eyes at him, she gently smacked him on the chest. "Harry Potter," she said with mock sternness, then a smile. "You are the best."
With a nod, she got off his lap and took his hand so they could walk back to the house. He seemed to have done everything right. Picking the right ring, getting the opinions of her friends, alerting her family. Had he asked permission? Not that he had needed permission, but she'd always found the thought of a boy asking a girl's parents romantic.
"Did you ask my parents?" She asked then. "I mean, I know you didn't have to, and it's okay if you didn't. But did you?"
---
Harry chuckled at the smack, and nuzzled his cheek against hers before she got up. The pace that they took to get back to the house was slower than it had been to get out to the garden, he thought. Somewhere in the back of his mind, he wondered if he should have had Hermione hide and take pictures. Maybe their friend had already thought of that and done it anyway. He hoped so.
He grinned at her question. “See, and people thought that wasn’t important to you, but I know you. Yes, I asked. Obviously they gave their blessing, or I wouldn’t be here,” he replied, giving her hand a small squeeze.
---
"It's not that it's that important to me," she said, leaning on his shoulder again. "I just think it's a nice gesture. It's romantic, and I'm glad you did it." She wasn't traditional about many things, but she did like that custom. Ginny felt that it brought her family into the process, and knowing they said yes was confirmation that they thought Harry was good enough for her. But of course he was, and of course they had said yes.
"So how are we going to tell them?" she asked. "We could just barge in and announce it, or we could wait to see how long it takes them to notice the ring."
---
“Well, part of me wanted to do it, just...You know, to get their approval,” he replied. Mr. and Mrs. Weasley had always been like surrogate parents to him, and he had always had this desire to make them proud. Make all of them proud, really.
“Well, we could always just see how long it takes them, but I have a feeling your mum will give it a way. She practically tackled me into a hug when I asked her, so she’s pretty excited, I think.” A soft smile tugged at his lips as he wrapped an arm around Ginny’s shoulders as they walked, the house coming into view.
---
Ginny sighed dramatically and grinned. "Alright then," she said, leaning against him as they walked.
Coming closer to the house, she could see her mother's face in the window. "Here we go, Potter," she smiled, kissing his cheek.
