2: Safety
Dom and Emilie were exhausted. They were at the end of the talk show circuit they had been on for a week, promoting another season of Lost and giving some general hints of what was to come next. Tomorrow at noon, they were returning to Hawaii to continue taping the show and immersing themselves in their characters. None of it was new to Dominic. He had done all of it before for the ring movies. Talk shows, awards, reporters, and paparazzi. It was all the same. After all this time, nothing has changed. Not even the fan girls who squealed and thrust note pads and various items at him to sign.
The only thing that was different was that the guys weren’t there to bask in the fame along with him. Everyone was out on projects of their own…or had just disappeared…just like Elijah had. Dom frowned at the thought of his former lover and friend. It’s been two years since he had last spoken to Elijah. Two years since Elijah had broken it off, claiming that a relationship was bad for their careers and that he was doing what was best for the both of them. But what career Elijah? You haven’t had one movie in two years…in fact no one has heard from you at all. Where are you and why was it so important to end what we had before it even begun?
He had tried to bring up Elijah’s disappearance to the others, but they always gave him reassurances that Elijah
was fine and would get in touch with them when he was ready. Well, it was two years and there was still no
word from Lij. He had tried Elijah’s family numerous times, but all they would tell him was that Elijah was
fine and was now living a quiet life with some guy named Kevin…but something bothered Dom about that
story…he didn’t know what it was, but there was something that had sent a sharp shiver down Dom’s
spine. Yet there was nothing he could do…at least not until Elijah said that he needed him.
Dom sighed. He missed those carefree days after the ring movies so much. Those days when they had just wrapped and there were numerous celebrations. Nights of roaming about and showing off for the press and the fans. They had been so invincible then. They were the stars of the big film. The future had been bright. They had not only fame…but they had had each other. Then it had all fallen apart, ruining everything. The youngest of them had left the fellowship, cutting ties with them all, and it had been his fault. If only he had tried harder to see where Elijah had been coming from…if only he had tried harder to keep in touch…
“Hey, where are you?” Emilie placed a gentle hand on his shoulder, her blue eyes warm with concern. It wasn’t like Dom to be this quiet. Usually he was full of energy and nothing could shut him up. This silence…it just wasn’t him.
Dom forced a smile, not wanting the melancholy he felt to spread to the pretty blonde by his side. Emilie was the sweetest girl; he didn’t want her to feel sad as well. It would do neither of them any good. One of them should be happy, at least. “Just reminiscing, pet. Nothing to worry your pretty head over.”
Emilie wasn’t buying the excuse, but she wasn’t about to push the subject. If Dom wanted to talk to her about what was troubling him, he would…when he was ready. Making him open up was not going to help. “Come. Let’s get inside. It’s cold and I’m about to fall asleep on my feet.”
Emily grabbed Dom’s arm and pulled into their warm hotel and came to a sudden stop. A commotion of some kind was going on at the front desk. Someone was yelling to see one of the guests, but the clerk and security guard was refusing to let him pass. “What’s going on?”
Dom frowned. He never was one to like commotions…unless he was the one causing them. Whatever this was at the desk…it could be anything and his only thought at the moment was to make sure the lady he was with was safe. It wouldn’t do for anything bad to happen to his leading lady and friend. “Stay here. I’m going to go see what’s going on.”
“Dom…” Emilie opened her mouth to protest, but was interrupted by the clerk, who they hadn’t noticed heading in their direction.
“Mr. Monaghan! Thank God you’re here! A very poorly dressed young man just came in here claiming to know you and that he had to see you right away. I hadn’t believed him and called security, yet he still refuses to leave. You may want to take Ms. Ravin and…”
“Dom!”
That one voice…a voice that Dom had lost all hope of ever hearing again, made everything stop. Dom froze and looked pass the desk clerk to lock eyes with the one person that he had missed more and more each day. “Elijah.”
Dom’s eyes widened in disbelief. He barely recognized the young man, who seemed to be swaying on his feet. Elijah’s hair was in disarray. His face was swollen and a mass of red and purple bruises. His left arm hung at an unusual angle. His clothes might be hiding any other injuries he might have had. It was the eyes that told Dom who it was speaking to him. The eyes weren’t as bright, but they were just as blue as the last time he had seen them. They were Elijah’s trademark and they screamed for Dom to remember them.
“Do you know this young man, sir?” The clerk looked at Dom, not wanting to believe that someone that he’s been watching on TV all this time would ever associate with the sorrowful creature that had walked into his hotel.
Dom didn’t have time to answer. Elijah’s strength had held for as long as it was going to. It couldn’t hold anymore. The broken young man collapsed in a broken heap.
“I’ll call for the police, sir,” The clerk made for the desk, but Dom stopped him with a strong grip on his arm. Something told Dom that the police were the last thing that Elijah needed, at least for right now. Besides, what help could they be? Elijah was unconscious. He wouldn’t be able to tell them who had done this to him.
“No, no don’t. I know him. He’s a old friend of mine,” Dom let the clerk go so he could rush to Elijah’s side. He fought back tears as he knelt beside him. What the hell happened? Who had done this? Why? Where had Elijah been for all this time and why was he showing up now, at Dom’s hotel?
Emilie frowned, confused. “You do? Who is he?”
“Elijah…Elijah Wood,” Dom forced himself to look away, wiping the tears from his eyes. This wasn’t the Elijah he knew. The Elijah he knew was healthy and strong. He didn’t have any broken bones or bruises marring his beautiful face. The Elijah he knew was a beautiful porcelain doll that no one would ever dream of breaking. This Elijah…he was so broken. Battered. Weak. Someone had indeed broken him…maybe even beyond repair. Baby, what happened to you? Who did this? Why?
“Oh my God…what happened?” Emily asked, her eyes wide in a disbelief of their own. Of course she knew of Elijah Wood…she just never imagined seeing him like this. He was so beat up. She wiped away at her own tears, reminding herself to stay strong. Somehow she knew that Dom was going to need her strength tonight. They both were.
“I don’t know…but I’m going to find out,” Dom took Elijah’s uninjured hand in his own and glanced up at the clerk, who looked as if he didn’t know what he was supposed to do next. “Does this hotel have a doctor?”
“Uh…yes sir…but…”
“Get him up to my room as soon as possible. We’re going to need immediate medical attention,” Dom carefully scooped Elijah up in his arms, careful not to brush against his injuries. His eyes narrowed as he saw the clerk still standing there, not making a move to do what he had just said. “Bloody hell, do I have to repeat myself, you wanker? Go call a doctor and send him to my room!”
“Uh…uh…yes sir,” The clerk skittered off, not wanting to piss Dom off anymore then he already had.
“Dom…do you want me to come with you?” Emilie asked, not sure if she should follow.
“Of course. Follow me. You can help me get him settled. I just…I just can’t believe this. I want to kill whoever did this,” Dom growled, tears falling from his eyes. It hurt to see Elijah like this. So broken and lifeless in his arms. The last time he had held Elijah like this, it had been to make love. Now the purpose was to nurse him back to health in the comfort of his hotel room.
“Dom…he’s going to be ok. I’m positive of it,” Emilie reassured her co-star/friend.
“I hope you’re right, Em. I hope you’re right. There’s no telling what I’ll do to whoever is responsible for this if he doesn’t,” Dom growled, letting Emilie retrieve the key from his hip pocket. He halfway wondered if he was scaring his friend with his dark attitude…but he couldn’t really bring himself to care. Elijah needed him right now. That was what was important. Emilie’s feelings were just going to have to wait.
Once safely inside, Dom headed for the bed and gently tucked Elijah under the covers, thinking of all the ways he was going to torture Elijah’s attacker. He was going to make the man suffer dearly. But first thing was first. Nursing Elijah back to health and finding out where he’s been for the past two years.
