She excuses herself early these nights, going to her bedroom and getting dressed. She can hear her husband in the living room, listening to the radio or perhaps simply reading, sometimes chuckling at an amusing passage, and the thought of him out there without her makes a knot in her stomach. She dresses for bed, her gown blue and flowing, empire-waisted with puffed sleeves at her shoulders. She had it made especially, and her husband likes it on her, tells her the satiny fabric flows beautifully around her, making her seem almost ethereal. But she doesn't wear it for him.
Once she has dressed, drawing her curly hair back and tying it with a careful ribbon, knowing from long experience that if she doesn't take proper care of her hair, the morning's arrival will find it frizzy and difficult to tame. And once her hair is bound back and her nightgown on, she slides on matching blue dressing slippers and creeps to the hallway outside her daughter's door, listening... waiting...
It isn't long before she hears their voices, her daughter's and his. There's laughter. Merriment. Memories... For a moment, she bows her head, her hands clutched to her breast to stop the slow ache in her heart as she remembers it all. And then she kneels, peering through the keyhole into her daughter's room as he takes her daughter's hand and guides her to the window.
Wendy cries when Peter flies her daughter off to NeverLand, wondering in the deepest part of her soul why it couldn't have been her.
