Duo Maxwell, pilot of Deathscythe, had known his job in the war was going to be hard. He'd thought himself prepared when he first slipped into the cockpit of his gundam. He'd already seen the ravages of war. He'd already seen the pain of destruction, of orphans hungry and homeless, sometimes so badly wounded that they were dying in the street. He'd seen the disease that swept through L2, that killed his friends and never once touched him. And he'd planned, in his heart of hearts, to revisit that suffering on his enemies. On OZ. On the Federation. Maybe even on Earth. What he hadn't ever expected, even beyond the surprise of survival, was to see the aftermath of his own handiwork, to see haunted eyes above a skinny body with only three limbs and to know that he'd done that.
Duo Maxwell, former gundam pilot, worked long hours in the rebuilding of the church rubble. He had help, funded by money funneled from his enemies. But this was his task, his punishment for what he'd done. For though his reasons were right... just... honorable..., though he'd fought for their freedom as well as his own, though he'd accepted danger time and again to avenge his own dead... though there were all the excuses of his memory and more, Duo Maxwell knew that the only way to rebuild hope was one stone at a time. And when he looked at overworked hands, bloodied and torn and filled with the grit of construction and penance, Duo wondered if that was what his soul would look like to God.
But perhaps with more blood.
