[Harry Potter] Halo
Title: Halo
Author: Trio Maxwell-Chang
Fandom: Harry Potter
Pairing or POV: Draco (about Hermione)
Special Note: Thanks to grissom for offering me the title and her Draco muse. I'm not hugely pleased with this piece, but perhaps with it finally out, I can write something else.
He knew why Potter always fell into his 'grand adventures'. The boy's determination to keep his notoriety was obvious. And Weasley's coat-tail-riding was equally obvious, a sickeningly sycophantic display that turned his stomach. Initially, he'd thought that she was just like Weasley, a mudblood version of Potter's redheaded sidekick.
But lately, he'd revised that opinion. She was always frustrated by the activities, wanting them done with so that she could focus on her studies. Which had given him several sleepless nights of confusion, when he realized it. If such were the case, why not throw them over completely, and ignore them?
So he began watching her. Given the life he was expecting to, and expected to, assume, he decided it was best to understand his enemies. Carefully, mindful of reputation, he watched her help Longbottom, and tutor the Weasley girl, and explain classes dozens of times to Potter and Weasley. He watched her go to every quidditch game that Potter played in, and cheer her voice into hoarseness.
He watched it all, and still could not understand her motives, not until one afternoon early in their sixth year. They'd been sitting outside, she to enjoy the sunlight and he to watch her. Her hair was pulled back away from her face, a froth of curls fringing her forehead. Eventually, she rose to go in, and for a moment, as she turned toward the castle, the curls caught the sun behind them, lighting up into a golden glow. Just for that one moment, it looked, to his jaded, pale grey eyes, as though Hermione wore a halo.
And he understood.
