She had managed to pawn off the majority of her parcels to Sketchy and Original Cindy, and she had delivered the few that she couldn’t in record time. All so she could make a top secret meeting at Crash for Logan since all of the other Eyes Only informants had been unable to make it for him.
As she rode her bike down the familiar streets towards Crash, she inhaled deeply. It was another wet Seattle day and she could already detect a fate hint of winter. There probably wouldn’t be snow until late December but that didn’t stop the flow of memories that almost overwhelmed Max.
Every winter reminded her of the greatest night of her life: the night that she escaped Manticore and lost her family at the same time. A thrilling victory marred by a crushing defeat. And the cold winter snow always brought back the memories of that night fresh and raw all these years later. Max involuntarily shivers in reaction to the painful memories. At least Seattle’s winters tend to be mild and short-lived.
Before she enters Crash, Max takes in everything on the street, evidence that you could take the girl out of Manticore but you can’t take the Manticore out of the girl. Everything is normal except for the gleaming black car directly across from Crash. She can tell that it’s a classic car that’s well loved and completely out of place in this part of town. People who can afford cars like that don’t come to bars like Crash.
Max briefly wonders if everything has soured on her mission before it even began. Logan’s details had been vague so she can’t be sure if the car belongs to the person that she’s supposed to be meeting or not. She can’t be sure either way so she enters the familiar bar with caution.
It’s almost a let down when she walks into Crash and finds it practically empty. It’s quiet and the bar doesn’t seem too familiar to her now. There’s a young couple over in a corner slowly nursing their beers, as they’re lost in one another’s eyes. The bartender is an older man who nods at her and then there’s the owner of the out-of-place. She’s not sure why she’s so certain he owns the car, but she is. His back is to her and she can tell that he’s drinking a shot of something.
There’s something familiar about him and when he turns around, her heart pounds so hard in her chest in surprise that she’s certain that everyone else in Crash can hear it. He bumps into her and mumbles an apology and all Max can see and hear is Ben. A much older Ben, but her brother nonetheless. He starts to move away from her and her hand shoots out to prevent him from going. He looks down at her hand wrapped around his arm with some amount of amusement and it makes her angry.
”Who the fuck are you?” Max snarls. “I think you have the wrong guy, sweetheart.” “Who. Are. You?” Max growls.
She wants to knock his teeth in for daring to call her sweetheart. The more she looks at him, the more she can see the resemblance to Ben. This man could be Ben’s much older brother since he doesn’t look old enough to have fathered any kids. The uncanny resemblance disturbs her all the same.
“Dean Winchester.”
His words are soft spoken and she feels as if he had just told her a secret. He arches his eyebrow at her as she lets go of his arm. If it weren’t for her promise to Logan, she’d force answers out of this Dean Winchester. But her promise and the bartender’s pointed looks hold her back.
“Did you want something?” “My mistake, I thought you were someone else.” “I get that a lot.” “Sure, whatever,” Max coldly replies as she can sense the lie in his words.
As he walks out, she watches his every move. She promises that she’ll track him down and find out why he looks like Ben. There’s more than meets the eye with the mysterious Dean Winchester, she’s positive of that. She glares at the bartender when he tries to ask her something. Once she’s back at Logan’s apartment, she’ll have him do a background check on Dean Winchester. But first she has to follow through with the meeting for Logan first.
