She returns to the mansion because she has no other home and no one judges her for taking the cure. People seem to understand that having the power that drains people of their very essence and life by touch isn’t something desirable. She helps to take care of the younger ones while Storm and Logan rebuild the place in the wake of Scott’s and the Professor’s deaths. In the wake of Jean’s terrifying rebirth and second death. After all the mutant children of the world still need a refuge besides the streets and Magneto’s steel embrace.
Rogue doesn’t take Bobby back, even though part of her wants to take him back. Sweet and uncomplicated as he may be, he still broke her heart. She doesn’t blame him because it was killing her to not touch him and even though nothing happened but some handholding and Bobby showing off, Rogue doesn’t trust him like she used to.
She finds herself talking to Wolverine a lot. She might not have her power anymore, but he’s still a dominant presence in her head. They find comfort in one another’s company because they can still be themselves and not someone else. When it’s just the two of them, he can be Wolverine and not responsible Logan. He doesn’t have to watch his every word to make sure a cuss word doesn’t slip out, and he doesn’t have to watch his temper. In other words, he doesn’t have to follow in the saintly Scott’s footsteps. And Rogue can still be the girl that she was when she first met him in Canada.
They fall into a relationship rather than plan to have one. She had grown out of her schoolgirl crush for him by now and he had stopped mourning for Jean and what he had to do. They’ve helped one another heal over the last year of cures, phoenix-like resurrections and the reconstruction of the Professor’s dream. It was only natural for it to happen; after all they had become closer and closer as they worked together to rebuild the Professor’s grand vision.
One day they were friends and the next they were a couple. Their first kisses were chaste, even though they both knew what Logan was really like. For once, he’s not in a rush to get the woman into bed. It’s not about release it’s about exploring one another and learning one another’s secrets. And they both have all the time in the world to learn one another’s bodies.
When the first cured mutants started to redevelop their abilities, the government quickly suppresses it. It’s an election year and mutants are already a touchy subject that neither party wants to deal with, especially when the supposed cure is a bust. Instead government agencies do what they can to keep the news a secret. And no rumors whispered or otherwise, find their way to Professor Xavier’s school for gifted children.
The inhabitants of the stately mansion are ignorant of the fact that they have a walking time bomb on their hands. It’s during those warm in-between days that make up late spring that Rogue starts to feel different.
For the first time since she had kissed her first boyfriend for the first and only time, Rogue is able to walk around without multiple layers of clothing on. Her pale skin is starting to darken under the late spring sun. She’s free to touch people and she rejoices in it, yet every now and then she feels a slight twinge of something when she touches someone. She’s not quite sure of what it is and without the Professor or even Jean around, Rogue is without resources to find out if she is being paranoid after being cautious for so long. So she ignores it and chalks it down to an over-reactive imagination and paranoia.
It’s not until a month later on the last night of spring that her fears become a reality. She’s on Logan’s lap as they watch the night sky together, his lips are moving along her neck making her forget about the celestial bodies. He lifts her up and turns her around so that she’s facing him and Rogue knows that they’ve moved from just touching to sex in that one simple act. She leans in closer and kisses him and suddenly it goes from pleasure to terror when her powers kick in full force once again.
Logan barely manages to pull himself away as he breaks the kiss and pushes her off of his lap. He rolls onto all fours as he pants; his claws reflexively sink into the soft earth as he fights to stay conscious from the strain of Rogue’s power sucking his life away. It’s ten times worse than ever before and he’s not sure if it’s because it’s been so long since this has happened, or if it’s because it had been suppressed for so long.
She’s crying in horror at what’s happened, confused that it had even happened. And it’s how Storm finds them since she had been seeking them out to tell them that Magneto is stirring up trouble again. Somehow they manage to get back inside without encountering anyone and Rogue locks herself up into her room where she changes back into her old clothing once more. Her relationship with Logan is over before it was even consummated and she can’t prevent the tears that are rolling down her face.
