FAQ
Have questions that aren't answered in the user info? This is the place to ask them.
Q. Is it any fandom?
A. Yes fic_variations is any fandom, except Real Person Fic or Real Person Slash. I know that it does look like we favour procedural crime shows, but we do allow any fandom.
Q. Is there a penalty if I don't complete my fics?
A. No, this is a low-pressure community. If you complete your claim, then you get a shiny banner. If you don't then you'll get a chance to complete the claim when we run an amnesty round.
Q. What's an amnesty round?
A. Every three months, we allow writers to finish their past claims from the last three months. For example, if the amnesty round is in June, then writers can post any fics for claims made in March, April and May.
Q. I've made a claim at the start of the month, and I've finished it, can I claim something else?
A. Essentially our stance is two claims per writer per month. Therefore if you've made your two claims at the start of the month and have completed them, you'll have to wait until the next month to make a new claim. However, if you've only made one claim and you've completed it, and there's still at least a week in the challenge, you always claim something else.
Q. Can I make ficlets and drabbles for our claim or does it have to be one or the other?
A. The quick answer is one or the other. However, if you've completed your set requirement for your claim and you have written something else for the claim but doesn't fit the word requirement, it's okay to post it. For example, you've written your five drabbles and your sixth drabble has become a ficlet, it's okay to post it.
Since we are very low pressure, we're not going to be counting every single fic to ensure that it mets the required word count. There is some leeway. For example if you started out writing ficlets and your final ficlet is a few words short (i.e. you have 490-500 words), it's okay to post it as a ficlet.
Q. Should I post from my regular journal or my fic journal?
A. Ultimately the answer is whatever you feel comfortable doing.
I tend to post under my regular journal but link back to my fic journal. If you're going to post from a different journal than what you claimed from, you need to make sure that you leave a note at the claiming post to state this and the second journal needs to be a member of the community.
Q. What type of fic, can't I post here?
A. The only fic that we disallow is Real Person Fic/Real Person Slash other than that anything goes.
However, anything that has a rating of NC17/Adult/FRAO should be clearly labeled as such in both the subject header of your post and the header in the post.
Likewise, anything that would squick someone should be posted in the warnings and bolded. For example, slash, character death are allowed, but you do need to put it in your warnings. For example: Warnings: This fic contains slash.
Q. What is your policy on fics that are based on the most recent episode of a tv show?
A. Again anything goes. However we do ask that you put something in the spoilers to warn people that you're writing something that's based on the most recent episode of a program.
For example: Spoilers: Contains spoilers for episode 2x22 "All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2" of Supernatural.
Remember not everyone has access to the North American schedule of a program.
Q. I belong to fic_variations on LJ, can I post my stories here for the monthly challenge as well as LJ?
A. Yes. At the monthly sign up post, be sure to make a note that you will be posting your stories at both journal sites.
