Two old scifi novels: "Dream Games", "War Games"

Has anyone else out there ever heard of these two scifi novels by Karl Hansen? A post on Elf's LJ reminded of them. Published waaay back in the 1980s, they were two novels of pretty much the sort of thing I like to write and read now: morally ambiguously, extremely dark and even more disturbing, full of decadence, violence, and perversion. Oh, yes, and furries. Actually, in certain of their elements they're too unpleasant even for me.

Cut for length and NSFW unpleasantness )

At the end of Dream Games, Mark explains that in the future, he sees his armies will have Terra under seige, but that then the Terrans will develop a terrible new weapon, and he does not know what will happen after that. I eagerly awaited the sequel, wondering what would happen. And waited. And waited.

It was never published. To this day I sometimes wonder sadly what happened to Karl Hansen. It was this discussion in [info]elfs LJ that brought this up in my mind over the past couple of days.

Dear Semester,

You have dragged me through hell and back with all the reading, the papers, the sheer madness of what the instructors think that students should handle for one class...

So, listen up! I have a 9 abstracts, two book critiques, one term paper, a discussion, four tests and some key terms to finish in the next 14 days. Don't you dare throw any more crap at me until next semester or you will get no love.

Hell it is a miracle if I get out of this semester with my sanity in tact and grade that are at least passing.

I would like to be having a life back.

Sincerely over-worked,
Me.

You know you've reached a new level of crazy when you start to dream in novels...

So, my mom has pneumonia (I convinced her to go to the doctor because that's what I thought she had).

The cold that we've shared has escalated in her and I'm trying to avoid her fate. My cold is gone, it's my sinuses that are proving to be difficult in light of the recent snowfall.

I've gotten little sleep because of her snoring because the poor thing can't breathe at night. I've also been having f*cked up dreams because of it.

I've been dreaming in novels.

As in I'm READING entire novels that I've never read before in my sleep. After reading the passages in the book, the scene in my head turns into a movie that I watch. The one last night involved a male Cop who was chasing after a female killer and when she lured him to her home, she kept trying to seduce him, then sets him up to kill someone, causing him to shoot out of cold instinct. It's in that moment that DUN DUN DUN he realizes that the case he was following was of another serial killer that the female was a copycat and that killer was....him. He had lost his memories and in that cold blooded moment, he realized just who he was...then he shot himself. 0_____0!

Suspense-filled, but f*cked up.

There was another one that involved the Demon Librarian of Hell's Library at a conference talking about difficult patrons with the Angel Librarian of Heaven's Library. They proceeded to then discuss an interlibrary loan service with the Limbo Librarian by conference "phone" (it was a conch shell). 0_o;

Speaking of the library not in my dreams, things are going well in Library Land. I'll be taking charge of the Civil Service Test books in January at the downtown library. ^__^ I've also successfully ordered some books for my subject class and wrote my first monthly report.

I also got my first "nut". If someone asks you to look up the word 'commandment' in the dictionary, then proceeds to disagree with you about the dictionary meaning, then goes into a suitcase to pull out their bible, then have you find a passage, then proceed to read you that passage, then proceed to give you their interpretation....back away very slowly when another librarian rescues you, then run away while the patron's back is turned. (If you get me in person, ask me to tell the story. It's much better in person. Those who have heard some of my 'library stories' can attest to that, LOL)

For WSE, it seems that I may be teaching some beginner computer classes. I have to draft a class plan and figure out days to do such. Now that WSE has a projector and laptops, we can host some computer classes. I just want to test drive hooking up a laptop to the projector.

I've also been preparing holiday cards & gifts to mail out. My goal is to have most packages in the mail by the end of the week for international folks, with a few domestics as well. I just need time to personalize items. I've got everything is labeled. ^___^

*shamelessly ganks from tripoverhercats*

So, have been playing an online pet game called Howrse, and it has a reward system where sponsoring someone into the game is part of the achievement process.

So, if anyone would like to give it a try, please use this link:

http://www.howrse.com/?parrain=artimusdin

and it will credit me as your sponsor. To start with you get one horse or pony (your choice in the color or breed) and you raise, train, sell, compete and breed them. As you go along in the game you can open your own stable to board horses and hold various jobs.

Or you can just register, twiddle around for a day and then ignore it and it'll still give me the credit for a sponsored player. (you can only have one account, so if you already have one, don't jepordize your karma)

to Bleach, or to Dark Shadows?

I'm up to episode 84 on Bleach, so I might keep going, and THEN go watch DS from the beginning. I did enjoy a few years back when Sci-Fi aired Dark Shadows daily, just like back in the day, on the old tube, when watching would have gotten us in trouble with our parents, ahaha. Good times.

But last night I got some upper forearm pain from using the mouse too long, argh. My pencil for my next project is almost done, but you know, I don't want to even look at it, after going three or four days straight on it, and my Triton color will have to wait a bit too. Maybe in a day or so I can get back on the wheel.

Have to take a ton of books back to library, a writer of historical Japanese mystery I was reading did not work out, and another historically based book also fell flat, dudes, if I know more than the author, and I'm hardly trying ... I'm not impressed. OR when people write what amounts to an ordinary story just colored in, the story should come from character and place, particular to that time and place, without dropping one's cultural and modern sensibilities on it.

For good Japanese historic mystery fiction, read I.J Parker's Akitada series. For a Japanese-Au history, read Lian Herne, Tales of the Otori series.

DARK SHADOWS

File:Barnabas Collins 2.JPG

In the mood for an intriguing, exciting, and occasionally campy Vampire and monster serial? You can't do better than the 1966-71 soap opera DARK SHADOWS which became a daytime drama hit and a cult classic, in particular because it's audience was the 18-30 demographic, who also followed STAR TREK, when I was very little, my babysitter would watch this and the theme music still gives me the shivers!

While the special effects have dated, it's still an enjoyable romp, and you come to appreciate the plots and characters, filmed live, and often in one take, all the episodes but one are still available, which is incredible considering most serials of this time had their tapes recycled.

The show was created by Dan Curtis, who tells of a dream he had in which a girl takes a long train ride to visit a large mansion. The story "bible," which was written by Art Wallace, does not mention any supernatural elements. It was considered daring (and unprecedented in daytime television) when ghosts were introduced about six months after it began.

The series became hugely popular when, a year into its run, vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Jonathan Frid, appeared. In addition to vampires, Dark Shadows featured werewolves, ghosts, zombies, man-made monsters, witches, warlocks, time travel (both into the past and into the future), and a parallel universe. A small company of actors each played many roles and, as actors came and went, some characters were played by several actors.

Dark Shadows was distinguished by its vividly melodramatic performances, atmospheric interiors, memorable story lines and an unusually adventurous music score. Now regarded as somewhat of a camp classic, it continues to enjoy intense cult status among its followers.

As a child Johnny Depp was so obsessed with Barnabas Collins that he wanted to be him. In fact, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp are collaborating yet again to bring this series back to life. Johnny Depp will play the lead role of Barnabas. It will be director Tim Burton's next project and eighth collaboration with Depp.

do a little googling to watch online.

It's been a day.

Yeah, it's been a day.

People who know me in RL know that I get angry--truly angry--pretty much once a never. Pissed, yeah, I get pissed at the drop of a hat, but angry? No. I control my temper and let a lot of things slide precisely because I know how bad it is when I get mad. In the last ten years, I can count on one hand how many times I've gotten angry. Last time I got truly angry was in 2006.

Until today. )

Patrick Stewart is awesome.

Patrick Stewart: the legacy of domestic violence - As a child, the actor regularly saw his father hit his mother. Here he describes how the horrors of his childhood remained with him in his adult life

Wii Fit Challenge~: The word of the day is 'bitch'

Time spent: 1:09
Calories burned: 324
BMI: 29.2
Feeling: HULK SMASH AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRR

The obstacle course is a punk ass bitch. Do you hear me? A PUNK AS BITCH.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGH.

I beat the beginner level--I started it, yelled, "I am going to make you my bitch today!" and proceeded to pwn it. No, it wasn't as high as the first and only other time I beat it, but this time I beat it at a walk and felt confident I could do it again, unlike the first time, which was sheer, unbridled luck and panic.

Since I had beaten it, it gave me the option of the advanced level.

PUNK. ASS. BIIIIIIIIITCH.

*froth at mouth*

I am not even kidding, I was screaming at the game, calling it every filthy name in the book...and calling it filthy names because it obviously calculated the calories burned based on the "meters" you had progressed, not how much you did, because there was no effin' way I only burned eight calories one particularly bitchtastic time.

And what, you may be wondering, make the advanced level that much more of an evil bitch of a game?

The ice.

That's right, there are points where the platform is ice, and your Mii will slide right off if the next platform you need to jump for is out of position. All you can do is watch as your Mii slides right off the edge, because your other choice is to commit suicide and leap into the sea.

I was literally making infuriated screaming sounds that sounded like they should be coming out of the Hulk.

RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE.

And to top it all off, I redid my BMI reading (because I was stuffed full of coffee and bibimbap when I got home) and when it finished the "balance" measures it told me..."you should do the obstacle course to help you!"

Thank god you can't really rage quit the Wii Fit, or else I so would have. XD

I'm both encouraged and impressed by the amount of dialogue these posts have opened. I know I've disseminated a lot of information, and I know it can be a lot to take in. I also want to thank Minxie for the information she's shared, as well as thank all the people who have weighed in on this topic by commenting on the other posts. This one will be the last of this series of metas, and I do hope they've been helpful.

The Great Squash Dilemma

So the last time I went home to visit the parents, I came back to town with two squash.

One of these squash was, I kid you not, substantially larger than my fifteen-pound cat. The neighbors and I ate just the neck of the monstersquash in a huuuuuuge vat of soup... leaving over 3/4 of it left for future use. It's now occupying a sizable chunk of my freezer. I haven't even opened the second squash yet.

I went home again for Thanksgiving.

I came home with four more squash (three pumpkins and an acorn).

Now my Christmas prayer goes like this:

"Oh please oh please oh please, let there only be six squash coming back next time. Because I'm clearly caught in either an arithmetic or an exponential progression, and I am just not mentally prepared to deal with sixteen more squash..."

Has anybody got any easy, low-fiddly non-dessert recipes for pumpkins/squash? Between low-carb and low-fat restrictions, pumpkin pies/breads/cakes are kind of out of the question, and I've made a bunch of soup and a bunch of curry and am trying to figure out what else to do that's mass-squash-using (ravioli's way too fiddly to use that much squash with, and my freezer would explode...)
