Rufus glared at Reno. His Turks were in disarray, half their number missing. “It was a simple job! What the hell happened?”

 

Reno scowled. “I didn’t expect a kind of Shinra Inquisition!”

 

“Hah!” shouted Kadaj, kicking in the door. “NOBODY expects the Shinra Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise… surprise and fear… fear and surprise… Our two weapons are fear and surprise… and ruthless efficiency… Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency… and an almost fanatical devotion to Mother… Our four… no…  Amongst our weapons… Amongst our weaponry… are such elements as fear, surprise… I'll come in again.”

He was made to fight, created for the sole purpose of combat, and he knows this. Swords, guns, fists, arcane Wutaian artifacts – they all serve him equally, wielded with deft precision in the pursuit of his art.

 

With fists he demands respect. With steel he commands obedience.

 

But more than these, the Silver Warrior keeps one weapon hidden, a final strike that few can withstand. It cuts through the strongest foe, turning resolve into the deepest, darkest doubt.

 

When the fight has gone long enough, he meets his enemy’s gaze as perfect lips curve slowly into a cold, sardonic smile.

The shotgun is heavy in his injured hand, yet he raises it without fear.

 

Once it represented his longing to be among those who served Shinra in the shadows; a proper son would not have carried it, but Rufus did. It symbolized the strength of Rude, the mercurial temper of Reno, the overlooked lethalness of Elena, and the ever-present comfort of Tseng – all in one portable package.

 

Now, though, it is all that stands between him and the nightmare reborn. He has one shot, maybe two.

 

Trusting more than fate, he lets the air catch him as he falls, aiming.

He watches her enter a combative form and smiles. The only weapon she appears to have is her body.

She charges forward and he’s surprised at her speed, dexterity, and strength.

The battle blurs and he reacts on instinct – the materia heightening his abilities.

He throws her and she lands on the wall – tearing the flowers apart.

When he finally uses the Dual Hound – he’s stunned at her fallen form.

She is not altered.

There must be some mistake.

He lifts her and readies a strike.

Distraction changes his mind, but he hopes he gets to play with her again.

When he's old, Cloud puts his swords on sale.

He and Tifa are both silent as they collect them all, admiring the blades that are still untouched by rust and testing how their weight feels in their hands. Cloud takes pride in the way he can still hold the Ultima Weapon with untrembling fingers, how the hilt still seems to be molded to his touch.

Putting the last sword away makes him ache, but when Tifa asks him if he's sure, her hand gentle on his shoulder, he says: "It's time for somebody else to do good with them."

And there's no regret.

Tifa went along with it until the day after Cloud left, chasing his dreams. Almost all the boys were gone; she had no protection but what she could do for herself. So she walked up to the teacher’s house, knocked, and, clenching fists that she just knew would be feared someday, got ready to face the man who would eventually show her that the best weapon of all was her heart.
