A/N: I wrote a 200-word fic for kinkfest, and felt the need to go for half.

 

 

 

I did what they demanded; what is left? A shattered shell, empty and discarded?

 

If I were empty, I wouldn’t feel the rain on my face.

 

Cloud is weeping for me. How strange. The only other tears I know were mine for Mother, and Loz’ for anything but me.

 

Mother, would you cry for me?

 

Sephiroth, would you?

 

Remembered words echo: I pity you.

 

Yes, I pity you, cold cold brother and Mother without a heart. In this moment I know myself, and I have something you can never take away.

 

Someone weeps for me, and freedom tastes like rain.

Cloud had finally given up trying to choke down what he'd ordered. Pushing the half-full plate aside, he put down his gil. It disappeared into the waiter's sleeve as soon as he let go of it, but the greasy little man was still looking at him expectantly.

I've had better dog food, Cloud wanted to say. "It was all right."

"Oh!" The waiter beamed. "Thank you, sir! Here you are." He handed over a small square of paper.

Cloud sighed and stuffed the pharmacy coupon in his pocket. What I won't do for free stuff.

He licked a droplet on his lip.

It tasted sweet.

He swallowed and felt it course through him.

He stared in amazement at the sky

Tears pooled in his eyes and joined the rain.

Strong arms made sure he didn’t fall, embraced him.

Why does he hold me?

He reached out to the clouds and his body grew lighter.

Is that Mother? Can’t I stay a little longer?

The lifestream called him home and he answered.

He hoped his brothers would choose to follow.

When he closes his eyes, Cloud can taste the ash and smoke that floated through the air as his home burned itself to the ground. It left a bitterness in his mouth and his mind, because it happened and there hadn’t been a damned thing he could do to stop it from happening. Coming back now and seeing it rebuilt as if nothing ever happened made him want to spit until his tongue was clean again. Hunching his shoulders against the stares around him, he followed the team into the hotel and tried to ignore the wrongness in his throat.

When it comes to remembering things, the Turks remember they work for coming in at 20 points this week.  Avalanche remember the what they are fight for at 10 points.  SOLDIER would rather just forget everything and call it even.

The prompt for this week is #14 - Taste

Taste can be defined as(among other definitions):

1. The sense that distinguishes the sweet, sour, salty, and bitter qualities of dissolved substances in contact with the taste buds on the tongue.  What would Tifa's home cooked meal taste like - and would Cloud taste it?? Does Rude have to taste Rufus's food before he eats it to make sure it isn't poisoned?
2.  A personal preference or liking.  Does Rufus have a taste for expensive cars?  Does Cait Sith have a taste for adventure? Does Zack have a taste for fast women?

Can you taste the materia in the air? What about mako - does Sephiroth taste it in the sweat dripping from his lip?
