Project Sephiroth leaned against the cool tile wall, seeking relief for his fevered skin. They'd injected him with a poison half an hour ago and left him alone in here to let his body fight it off on its own. He knew he was winning because it was easier to breathe now, and he could hear voices on the other side of the wall.
"...Hojo? Really?"
"You know what a control freak he is. Of course he'd use his own kid for Project Sephiroth."
Project Sephiroth staggered to the middle of the floor and ruined the experiment by throwing up.

He'd played the loyal warmage, casting destruction at the President's whim, and while the department heads were still bickering over their new weapon he'd stolen a Restore. Sephiroth pulled it forth now, in the darkness of his quarters. It nestled in his palm with a half-heard purr, flickering playfully with the glow from his eyes. Closing them, Sephiroth brought the cool crystal to his lips and cast.
The magic danced through him and he gasped, the sensation too new for a moment to be pleasurable, but as it faded Sephiroth curled up in a comfort he hadn't known he wanted.

For Aeris, for whom death had been a minor inconvenience, coming back to life had been no more effort than walking out of a cool spring; not so for Sephiroth. He was still incomplete, voiceless, his body weak and slow to respond.
That was why he was grateful that Aeris let him help her cook. He stirred the dressing, rinsed the lettuce, watched the water and touched Aeris's sleeve when it boiled. When Zack and Cloud returned for lunch, they kissed her cheeks and proclaimed she'd done it again.
"We did it," Aeris corrected, her smile teasing Sephiroth's into bloom.

"Look alive, boss!"
Sephiroth had started moving even before the shout came, turning and drawing his sword to split the projectile in half. It disintegrated, spraying him with brief cold pinpricks.
"Wrong tool for the job," Zack called merrily, waggling a second snowball at him. "I warned you there'd be a snowball fight!"
He had at that, Sephiroth remembered, the moment they learned they'd be posted together in the North. He flickered two fingers, sending the merest drop of Ice magic floating through the air to slip down the back of Zack's shirt.
At his Lieutenant's frantic yelp, Sephiroth smiled.

It was a comfort to know that the Great Sephiroth woke up just as human as anybody else: he had morning breath and tangles in his hair too, and was barely coherent before coffee. Even Cloud woke up faster.
Still, in a moment the older man would leave their shared bed, shake off his humanity and shackle himself into his leathers again. With a possessive hum, Cloud hooked his leg over Sephiroth's and pressed his mouth to the back of his neck. He felt the General grumble and subside, leaving only Sephiroth to curl like a cat in his arms.

He met her at the edge of the Sleeping Forest, where soft dirt gave way to fragmented shale. She startled when she saw him, her ginger braid swinging at her back, and curled her fingers against the bark of a tree as if seeking strength from it. "It's not time yet," she blurted.
Sephiroth let the point of his sword drop almost to the ground, very deliberately. "Lady Cetra," he said with only a hint of a smug smile, "I know that very well."
Aeris pulled herself together and nodded firmly, and side by side they entered the Forgotten City.
