“Zack? What’s...why do you have Angeal’s sword?” That struck right to the heart of the matter, and ached abominably.

“It’s...he died,” was all that he could get out.

“So he gave it to you. From behind, you look so much like him...”

The girl's lashes fluttered and she turned her head weakly, pale with pain and blood loss. "Hey, easy," Zack murmured, reaching for his Cure. "Don't try to move."

"Cloud," Tifa croaked, smiling shakily, and Zack's heart broke. "You said- you'd come when I was in trouble-"

Zack forced a smile. "Yeah," he answered. "And I kept my promise."

What the hell. He could be Cloud for a while.

Like everything else in Nibelheim, the house was eerily familiar, as if it had never been burned to the ground. Like the whole town had sprung up whole-cloth from Cloud's own mind. Trying to shake off the dizzying unreality, Cloud almost missed the older woman coming down the stairs. "Can I help you?"

"Uh- I'm looking for Dennis. He used to live here?"

She eyed him warily. "I'm sorry. I've lived here all my life, and I've never heard of any Dennis."

Cloud wanted to accuse her of lying, but the fact was he was no longer certain of that.

He keeps a straight face all through the bargaining, during which Aeris is as cutthroat as they come, and until their would-be purchasers finally give up. He doesn't start grinning until she smacks his arm and turns to ask Cloud if he's all right.

"Try not to get mistaken for whores again, boys," she says in answer to his grin. "I don't like to share."

Living in Midgar was strange, Tifa thought. The weather was completely different to Nibelheim, muggy and humid rather than dry and cold. The constant half-twilight and murky shadows under the Plate, never seeing the sun or the stars. Never feeling rain on her face. No wind, no animal sounds, not even insects.

But the worst thing was the crush of people. So many of them, so tightly packed together and -

"I'm sorry, I thought you were someone else," she apologised to a boy with brown eyes and blond hair.

"Zack, I don't care how you spin it, no one in the world is going to take being mistaken for a chocobo as a compliment!"

"Until your fist connected with my face."

"I thought you were a burglar. Why didn't you knock?"

"I didn't want to wake the kids."

Tifa sighed and looked at the wide-eyed faces peering around the door jamb. "Great plan."

It’s hard to mistake a SOLDIER – they’ve got those bright, glowing eyes, and they really are glowing, which is the creepy part. You can’t use normal people’s eyes as night-lights, can you? But with a SOLDIER, all they have to do is open one eye, and there’s a little colored light there.

They tend to have weird-colored eyes, too; I heard one guy’s eyes actually turned purple after they did their stuff.

“Hey SOLDIER-boy!”

“I told you...I was never a SOLDIER.”

Of course he’s a SOLDIER. He’s got the eyes, right?

His eyes flickered to Cloud, who grinned at him as he swept away the few brown curls poking out from under a blond wig. Aeris set herself before him, dress straining around her broad, smooth chest but fitting her hips like a sheath.

"You make an excellent girl, Cloud," Sephiroth drawled.

"Zack!" Aeris exclaimed, color rising in her cheeks again. "You - you're such a - you big - don't do that! I thought you were a - a prowler!"

"Sorry, sweetheart," Zack sighed, and drew her close so she wouldn't see him grimace. He'd caught that hesitation and was pretty sure that 'prowler' meant 'Turk,' but that was one of the many things he wasn't supposed to know.

Yuffie snorted bitterly. "Da Chao would crumble before he noticed."

Drunks. They were always mistaking her for someone they knew, someone they wanted to know, or someone who wanted to know them. More accurately, they were always mistaking her breasts for someone they knew or wanted to know, and she supposed it was possible they thought her breasts returned the sentiment. It would help explain why she'd had entire soliloquies directed at her chest. Sometimes, there were tears... once or twice even before she'd shot the loser du jour down.

Tifa supposed it would all be flattering, if it didn't make her want to ram her fist down their throats.

Cid can grumble and swear all he wants, but the fact is, SOLDIER earned their 100 points last week.  They get to keep their trophy.  Avalanche tried their best for Cid's sake.  They managed second place with 60 points.  The Turks don't care enough about Cid's issues to warrant more than 10 points.

This week's prompt is #41 - Mistaken Identity

Have you ever had one of those awkward moments?  You see someone that you think you know, go up to them to say hello and then they turn around....eh, not who you thought they were huh? This week is all about mistaken identity!

Have the Turks beat up an innocent bystander thinking that he was someone else? Does Cloud still mistake himself for Zack?  In the right light and from behind, could Yazoo be mistaken for Sephiroth?  Would Barret ever be mistaken for someone else?  Is Cid groping around in the dark looking for a hammer and comes up with a wrench?
