Sephiroth caught Aerith around the waist, Masamune at her throat. “You. It must be you.”

Cloud brandished his sword. “What do you want with Aerith?”

Sephiroth smiled coldly. “I’ve been living a cursed half-life, neither truly alive nor dead. There is only one way out.”

Cid scratched his head. “What in the goddamn hells are you talking about?”

As though he hadn’t heard, Sephiroth continued, holding Aerith tighter. “A girl with green eyes, a girl brave enough to embrace the naked blade. And when I find her, I will marry her!”

“Never!” cried Cloud.

“Then my curse will be lifted!” Sephiroth finished with manic glee.

Cid chimed in: “And go off and rule the universe from beyond the grave…”

“Indeed!”

“Or check into a psycho ward, whichever comes first, huh? C’mon, Cloud, let’s get yer girl back!”

Barret skidded to a halt, pristine Shinra tile squealing under his boots. "Aw, damn," he gasped out.

Shinra was investing quite a bit in battle mechs these days, it seemed; the big black machine hovered overhead, guarding the glass executive elevators. "So much for the easy way out," Red XII mused.

"I do not wanna use the stairs again," Barret groaned.

"So?" Aeris stepped into the elevator car, fixing him with a green-eyed glare. "Don't." She lifted her hand, displaying the lightning materia Cloud had given her as it crackled with energy.

Huffing, Barret rolled his eyes at Red XII "Wonderful girl. Either I'm gonna kill her or I'm beginning to like her."

He let her glimpse him at twilight, but she did not run. Curious, Sephiroth waited for her at the shrine. "Don't you fear me?" he asked.

"Should I?"

"As you fear death." Sephiroth drew his sword and showed it to her, how the keen edge split the very light.

Aeris only smiled sadly. "You can't win, Sephiroth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."

"But, Barret..." Jessie ran to the door, catching the big man's elbow in her palm. "What should Wedge and I do if we're discovered here?

Barret shrugged her off. "Lock the door."

"And hope they don't have Soldiers," Biggs put in.

The two men turned back up the tunnel, leaving Wedge and Jessie to hold down the fort. "That isn't very reassuring," Jessie muttered, and got back to work.

Nero coughed softly. “Someone already tried that.”

Weiss blinked. “…oh.” He looked around as if the bare walls could give him inspiration. It must have worked, for he brightened almost immediately. “I’ve got it! To boldly go, where – for pity’s sake, that’s been done too, hasn’t it…”

“I’ll be in my trailer,” Rosso grumbled.

“Ditto,” Argento muttered, following her out.

Nero just sighed.

Zack was happy. He was finally able to take Aeirth out on a real date, thanks to the large hazard bonus he'd earned on that last mission. It was a toss-up on which had been worse, the Vajradharas or dealing with Genesis for a week. But that didn't matter now; Aerith was looking fantastic and this hole in the wall restaurant was supposed to have great food. The waiter appeared with the wine (Zack had ordered the best in the house) and opened it with a flourish, proclaiming “Sparkling Muscatel, one of the finest wines of Idaho”.
“Where's Idaho?” asked Aerith.
“Must be our past Corel”, Zack replied.

“TRAINING SIR!” echoed the platoon with eardrum-bursting volume.

I know I’m going to regret this, Sephiroth thought; still, he continued. “What kind of training, son?”

Taking a deep breath, the SOLDIER bellowed, “HOAARRRMMYY TRAINING, SIR!”

“ARMY TRAINING SIR!”

Beside Sephiroth, Angeal hid his face in his hands.

Sephiroth gave him a look. “You…know this kid?”

The Lifestream put a lot of things into perspective, if you gave it time. With Jenova now fully gone, Sephiroth had all the time in the world. As such, many things were made clear to him before Vincent Valentine's almost un-aging body finally crumpled. Sephiroth was not surprised when the man sought him out to talk. 

"Sephiroth, Hojo was not your father. I am your father," the ex-Turk declared evenly, unruffled. 

"I know," Sephiroth answered on the same tone. "Lucrecia spoke with me."

There was no reply, and Sephiroth only caught the impression of a half-smile before Vincent Valentine was gone from his side.

Rufus was a hard man to keep up with in the Reconstruction times. He jetted from meeting to meeting, determined to have a part in everything. In between these meetings, he scribbled, jotted, and filled up reams of paper with his ideas.

The meetings had to be planned, the travel had to be arranged, and the papers had to be filed. His best Turk worked day and night and still couldn't keep up.

Tseng sighed as another notebook was tossed onto the pile. He didn't think this was the best use of his abilities, but he couldn't tell Rufus that.

SOLDIER got down on their knees this week to confess their secrets and sins.  They earned 60 points and get to keep the trophy for another week!  Avalanche and the Turks managed 10 points each, but getting confessions out of them is like pulling teeth.
