The Cost of Joining

Title: The Cost of Joining
Challenge: Past Prompts #4
Original Challenge:
Crossovers
Characters: the SHM

Team: SOLDIER
Word count: 100
A/N: I couldn’t manage a “Dr. Hojo’s Sing-Along-Blog,” so I did this one instead. (Lyrics totally not mine; I figured it was sort of a form letter…)

Kadaj snarled at the piece of paper. “Fine! If that’s how it is…” Crumpling the note and hurling it to the ground, he rounded on his brothers. “Come on. We’re going to see the President.”

Loz and Yazuu exchanged a worried look. Careful that Kadaj not see, Loz picked up the mangled letter and read:

He rides across the nation
The thoroughbred of sin
He got the application
That you just sent in

It needs evaluation
So let the games begin
A heinous crime, a show of force –

Loz sighed. “Looks like this is going to be one long day.”

Hand of Fate

Title: Hand of Fate
Challenge: Past Prompts #4
Original Challenge:
Crossovers
Characters: Angeal

Team: SOLDIER
Word count: 100
A/N: It’s exactly what you think it is.*

Angeal sighed, steeling himself. He lightly caressed the smooth black surface as though touching a living thing – a capricious living thing with a venomous bite.

So often he has used this to end another’s suffering, to speed the inevitable. Always he’d resisted the urge to use it to change the course of larger things, clinging fast to his own humanity against such temptation.

And now it was too late.

“I’m sorry, Genesis,” he whispered, then wrote with neat precision before leaving for his final confrontation.

Angeal Hewley. Approximately three hours hence, in Modeoheim, in battle.

The Shinigami watched him go.

*(Yes. It’s “Death Note.”)

I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own

Title: I Reject Your Reality and Substitute My Own
Characters/Pairings: Cloud, Sephiroth
Team: Turks
Rating: G
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: For the crossover prompt. Any Phoenix Wright fans out there?

“You are an idiot.” The ice blue glare sent at Cloud from across the courtroom could have bored a hole through him. “Your client is obviously guilty, and I will not allow you to trick the judge into thinking otherwise.”

Cloud stared at the prosecutor; gods, but the man was intimidating! The air of haughtiness was enhanced by the clothes, a tailored maroon suit offset with a white silk cravat. Wait, he was supposed to be paying attention to the proceedings!

“Objection,” he shouted on reflex.

Sephiroth’s calculating smirk informed him that he was likely walking headlong into a trap.

Town Burns, Everyone Dies

Title: Town Burns, Everyone Dies
Author: [info]jlsigman
Rating: G
Team: SOLDIER
Prompt: Crossovers (also could technically be Fire)
A/N: Crossover with Avatar: The Last Airbender

Sephiroth read without stopping for three days. There was so much information to process, so many things he had never known.

Like the other experiments, the ones deemed too unstable in some way.

He prowled the cellars for hours to locate their hiding places. He found one and studied the symbol on the containment unit: a dragon spitting fire.

She was slender with Wutian features and eyes that blazed with mako and insanity. Her flames were so intense they were blue. She laughed at the destruction, cackling with glee.

She was crazy, this Azula, but she was useful to him.

The Game

Okay, still going. Stupid brain.

Title: The Game
Characters: Zack, Duncan MacLeod
Team: SOLDIER
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: Lots random little fandoms in my brain this week.

Sitting up was painful, and Zack groaned, pressing a hand to his chest. He...the blood there was still sticky. How was he even able to move? Looking down, he grimaced. That was a lot of holes. Hell with how was he able to move, how was he even -alive-?

“Welcome to the Game.”

Looking up, Zack tensed at the man, who stood there in a long coat, his nerves jangling. “Who...?”

“My name is Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod. From a world that is long gone. I’m Immortal, as are you.”

This was going to be weird.

Triage / Fire and Shadow / Never Roam Alone / Roll For It / Healing Gift / Heroes

Title: Triage
Characters: Cid, Ratchet
Series: FFVII/Transformers G1
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Cid shoved the useless metal sheet over the side of the medical berth and hopped back inside the chassis it used to protect. The ruined metal groaned around him, shredded by a direct hit from a laser cannon, and before him, Ratchet's spark chamber leaked light from a long and wicked crack.

" Ain't you ever heard of triage?" the medic grunted, his chest cavity shaking with the effort of speaking. "Go help someone who's got a chance of living."

"You shut up," Cid snarled. "If I can fix a broken rocket, I can fix a robot with delusions of heroism."

Title: Fire and Shadow
Characters: Ravage, Nanaki
Series: FFVII/Transformers G1
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Ravage slunk past the chaos of the Autobots' medbay, and the sentimental fools were none the wiser. The Decepticons were so close to victory that they could taste it: all that remained was this final infiltration, to steal a final weapon. Ravage closed in on his goal, every sense alert and focused.

He turned a corner and received a fireball right to the snout, overloading his sensors to near-shutdown. "You're good, I'll admit," his attacker snarled, padding slowly into view. "But I'm better."

In the hallway leading to the Black Materia, Ravage and Nanaki faced each other as warriors.

Title: Never Roam Alone
Characters: Aeris, Optimus Prime, Jazz
Series: FFVII/Transformers G1
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Aeris rolled her mother's materia back and forth in her hands, too quiet for such a lively girl. Optimus let her lean back against his hip and was quietly surprised at how comfortable he was to have the fragile human there.

"Will you watch over Cloud?" she asked.

"I will," he answered sadly.

"And Sephiroth? It's really not his fault."

"I'll... do what I can."

"Thank you." Aeris smiled at him, her eyes too bright, and slipped from his lap to run soundlessly out the door.

Follow her, he ordered over a private channel, and Jazz sent back an affirmative.

Title: Roll For It
Characters: Aeris, Sephiroth, Cloud, Yuffie, Vincent
Series: FFVII/Dungeons and Dragons
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

"You look up and see your enemy descending from on high. Roll to dodge."

The dice rattled, rolled, and settled on the fate of the party's cleric.

"Noooo!" Aeris wailed. "Critical fail!"

"That's a hit for twenty-one damage," Sephiroth reported without looking up at his sheet.

"I'm dead." Aeris groaned and thumped her head on the table. "Screw clerics, next time I'm rolling a paladin." She glared at Sephiroth. "And for the record, you suck!"

Cloud patted her. "Don't worry," he assured her. "We'll avenge the hell out of you." Yuffie nodded agreement as Vincent popped open another Mountain Dew.

Title: Healing Gift
Characters: Alanna, Cloud, Aeris
Series: FFVII/Song of the Lioness
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Violet power flowed through Alanna, flooding Cloud's body with the healing power she'd developed over her career as King Jonathan's Champion. Cloud writhed and shook under her hands, his eyes blank and glowing with unnatural blue-green power.

"I don't know if I can-" she gasped, feeling herself falling into the magic-sick warrior along with her Gift. The Black God would take him soon, she thought despairingly.

Pale, thin hands clasped over hers; Alanna raised her eyes to meet Aeris's much calmer ones. The younger woman's near-translucent magic twined with Alanna's, and together they lifted Cloud's soul out of the dark.

Title: Heroes
Characters: Sora, Hojo
Series: FFVII/Kingdom Hearts
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Oathkeeper cleaved through the massive Shadow, and Sora pushed on with a shout of challenge against the darkness that pressed in on all sides. The office building was swarming with Heartless, and its halls were so featureless Sora feared they were lost until Goofy found the glass elevator Cloud had spoken of.

They rode it up and up, and burst out into a sterile room with two occupants. One was encased in a mako tube; the other pushed his glasses up his nose with an irritated scowl. "Who are you?"

"It's over, Hojo!" Sora challenged. "We're here to rescue Sephiroth!"

Suicide Is Painless

Title: Suicide is Painless
Characters: Zack, surprises
Team: SOLDIER
Rating: PG
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: I am a bad, bad person. Again, can anyone guess the fandom?

Most people, when they thought of the Wutai War, they thought of the SOLDIERs, Sephiroth. The fighters, the ones who came home without limbs or didn’t come home at all, those were the ones that everyone pointed out when they were talking about regular troopers.

But Zack knew there were a lot of people who made sure that more people came back than didn’t. He had been helping out there for a while, playing guard when the Wutanese targeted those vital places.

Though watching Radar say everything that Blake was a half second beforehand was always highly entertaining.

Title: Well, That’s ONE Way to Stage a Revolution
Challenge: Crossovers
Characters: Tsviets, Restrictor, and some hungry mutant space worms

Team: SOLDIER
Word count: 100
A/N: The battle for DeepGround is on!

Nero blinked as Azul ran past in a blur. Weiss sprinted in after, turned, and began frantically hitting buttons on the door panel.

“Lockdown! Repeat, full lockdown!” Weiss yelled at the intercom.

The cool voice of a Restrictor replied: “What seems to be the problem?”

Weiss paused, considering. “Sir, there’s some kind of mutant creature trying to gain entry. Tsviets can’t stop it.”

Tone reassuringly, predictably superior, the Restrictor said: “Very well. We will deal with it.”

Weiss shrugged at Nero. “If those things swallow their prey and digest at leisure, it’s not as if we killed off Restrictor, right?”

Seismology

Title: Seismology
Challenge: Crossovers
Characters: Deepground

Team: SOLDIER
Word count: 100
A/N: Anyone remember “Tremors”?

“Another one’s missing.”

Weiss glanced up at Azul. “Another SOLDIER?”

“Another patrol. Gone as if they’d never been.”

Weiss scowled. If you were good enough to be in DeepGround, you didn’t just go missing unless it was intentional.

Or something Very Bad happened.

“Show me.”

Weiss followed his lieutenant to the training grounds, built of natural caverns and holotechnology – a pseudo-wilderness.

Azul indicated where the patrol had last called in from. No gear, no blood, only preturnaturally smooth dirt in a wide circle.

In the distance, the ground rippled up like the wake behind a swimming serpent, moving toward them.

Necessity is a Mother for Invention

Title: Necessity is a Mother for Invention
Challenge: Crossovers
Characters: Zack, Cloud, and you’ll-find-out

Team: SOLDIER
Word count: 100
A/N: Had to be done. Had to.

Zack spluttered, clearing his lungs of liquid mako.

“You okay?”

He didn’t recognize the voice, but the shaggy-haired guy wasn’t wearing lab whites. “Did you –?”

The stranger regarded the second tank. He tied a piece of dental floss around a thumbtack, spit out a wad of chewing gum and stuck the end of the floss to the tank, then sliced a hole in the glass with the tack.

Zack caught Cloud’s body as glass and mako erupted to the floor. “Who ARE you?” he asked the man with the mullet.

“Name’s MacGyver. Come on, I’ve got a glider upstairs…”

This Is Another Fine Maguffin You've Gotten Us Into/What Do You Mean, Objection?/...What.

Title: This Is Another Fine Maguffin You've Gotten Us Into
Characters: Starscream, Megatron, NPC-obo
Series: FFVII/Transformers (G1)
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

"Wark!"

"Slaggit!"

A flurry of laserfire spattered the ground; shredded grass flew into the air, but the yellow-gold blur never even hesitated.

Starscream swore in fluent docklands Cybertronian and fired again, then shrieked at an even higher pitch than usual as tough clawed feet hit his plating. The chocobo bounded up him before the Seeker could think about moving, landed squarely atop his helm and, with a gleeful wark, pecked him.

"Aaaagh! Megatron! This is all your fault!"

As his noisy second-in-command screeched, Megatron charged his cannon.

The damn bird chuckled, bounding down and warking for them to keep playing.

Title: What Do You Mean, Objection?
Characters: Sephiroth, Phoenix Wright
Series: FFVII/Phoenix Wright
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Honestly, most of the people he was used to defending were pretty - odd. This guy was one of few to actually ask to be found guilty, though.

"So, um, mister - Sephiroth?" Phoenix shuffled his notes, aiming for friendly competance. "Can you tell me how all this started?"

Uncanny green eyes glanced up; if it weren't for the utterly defeated, broken look about him, Phoenix might have been intimidated. "It doesn't matter. My crimes are my own, no matter what Mother said; the penalty is deserved."

"...Mother?"

"Yes - Jenova. She told me to destroy the planet."

"-Hold it."

Title: ...What.
Characters: Sephiroth, Yoshis, Cloud-n-Candy (no, really, that's its name!)
Series: FFVII/Yoshi's Story
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

The last thing to be expected when Scarlett wanted volunteers was a cloud of cotton candy. Sephiroth only knew what cotton candy was thanks to an unfortunate mishap involving Lieutenant Fair and his hair; he neither wanted to get that close to it again, or be forced into fighting a large, dense sentient cloud of it.

"Wrooorgh!"

He sliced the soggy mass into what Zack called 'pineapple chunks' - then stared in horror as the globules became smaller, faster versions of the original.

When the group of small, brightly-coloured reptiles appeared and began to eat the globules, Sephiroth gave up.

Title: And Together…
Challenge: Crossovers
Characters: child!Sephiroth and a New Friend

Team: SOLDIER
Word count: 100
A/N: You can totally blame [info]deepbluesquee for this… :3

He paused in his race toward freedom, distracted by an unexpected sound. He crept back along the air duct until he found the source.

In the cell below sat a young-seeming biped, bigger than himself but not so large as the guards. The child tilted its head, silvery hair falling to almost cover the shackles on its wrists. Vertical-slit pupils in greenish eyes alight with a star-fog glow came to bear on his hiding place.

Decision made, Experiment #626 broke into the cell and took the other prisoner with him. If nothing else, he could use it as a shield.

Sephiroth Demands An Explanation For This

Title: Sephiroth Demands An Explanation For This
Characters: Sephiroth, extras
Series: FFVII/?
Author's Notes: ...Oh, come on. Everyone has to have seen That Icon by now. ;)
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Sephiroth glanced swiftly around the clearing, noting the number of opponents and drawing Masamune in one smooth motion. Monster-hunting was, by practical assumption on the part of anyone who had done it more than once, a mission class that could and did become something further out of the ordinary than may have been expected. It was always better to come over-prepared than othewise, on the chance that the monster which was supposedly a one-off had suddenly acquired a pack, or when the small, unassuming monster started breathing fire.

Being charged by small, shrill Sleipnir-alikes with ridiculous hair was comparatively unusual.

Rivalry/Passion Colors Everything

Title: Rivalry
Challenge: Crossovers
Characters: Zack, Sephiroth, surprise
Team: SOLDIER
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: It just had to be done. Cross with Yami no Matsuei.

---

"What the...?" Zack paused the moment he stepped into the innermost room of the reactor. Sephiroth seemed to be just as taken aback as he was, staring at the tube with the remains of his precious Mother.

Jenova, Zack mentally corrected himself.

The man in a white trench coat who shouldn't have been there turned around with a smirk. The mako light glinted off his glasses, Zack absently noted that there was something up with one of his eyes that shone an eerie blue.

"Ah, Sephiroth," the stranger tilted his head to the side. "I'm afraid, I can't let you have her..."

Title: Passion Colors Everything
Challenge: Crossovers
Characters: Genesis, Sephiroth
Team: SOLDIER
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: Cross with Equilibrium. Because that movie is made of win.

"You are not afraid of me." It was a statement, not a question, intrigued fingers ghosting along Genesis' jawline until the moment was crudely broken by a sharp mechanical sound. The tall man in black stepped back with a barely visible scowl.

"Time to inject your drug of choice, Cleric," Genesis purred with a malicious smirk.

"Take him away!"

"Once you decided that you are interested in what I can offer, drop me a call," Genesis laughed, dodging the enforcers and their bullets with superior speed and disappearing into the night.

Grammaton Cleric First Class Sephiroth clenched his hands into fists.

Fic: Shed Your Skin

Title: Shed Your Skin
Challenge: Crossovers
Characters: Snake, Otacon, Cloud
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100
Rating: PG-13
Author's Notes: Heh heh, it was the only series I could think of that would make sense--Metal Gear Solid. ;)

--

Snake's PHS rang. He glanced at the name, then before Tifa could say too much, said "I have to take this," and made his way out of the Nibelheim inn. He didn't trust Cloud, not yet.

"Snake?" Otacon said softly, and there was something strange in his voice.

"Yeah?"

"I...found out about that ex-SOLDIER."

"And you're only finding stuff now?"

"Hey, I had to hack deep into ShinRa to get anything! Technically, 'Cloud Strife' doesn't exist!"

"So he's not a SOLIDER?!"

He heard Otacon swallowing, and that wasn't good. "No. He's...one of their clone experiments. Like you."

Title: Tetchy
Characters: Cloud, Zack, Aeris, and Sephiroth
Team: SOLDIER
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 100
Author's Notes: I love this show. Cross with Firefly.

“What did you -do-?” That was from Aeris, who was listening over the open line as the people on the other ship were using some highly inventive threats. Cloud was beside her, ready to fly.

“Told him he was a jian huo.” A shrug from Zack, who was in the doorframe. “He’s also rather fond of the Alliance.”

“Once we are done playing,” came Sephiroth through the comm, “it seems we’ve collected a job. We’re to meet a Firefly class out by Highgate. Called Serenity. ”

“Ku.” Zack's grinned widened. “What sort of job?”

“Package delivery.”

”Fun times.”

The Value of Sidequests / Death and Life / Cut the String

Title: The Value of Sidequests
Characters: Vimes, Cloud
Series: FFVII/Discworld
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

People did not seek out Watchmen at bars. Bars were where Watchmen went to not be Watchmen. People who wanted a Watchman went to their headquarters, where their complaint would be duly noted and ignored. All through the proper channels.

The blond man sliding into Vimes' booth didn't know the rules. "I need your help," he stated.

"Door's that way," Vimes grunted.

Cloud pulled out a bottle of the kind of drink that cost a year's wages just to smell, and plunked it on the table. Suddenly he had Vimes' attention.

"I'm looking for a man in a black cape."

Title: Death and Life
Characters: Death, Aeris, Zack
Series: FFVII/Discworld
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

The ginger-haired girl looked rather put out to be dead, which was a common reaction- though not, Death reflected, among victims of murder. DON'T BE AFRAID, MISS, he began, and Aeris smiled up at him with no trace of fear.

"I'm not afraid," she said. "First things first- where's Zack? We've got a lot to do."

Death blinked, nonplussed, as Aeris reached in and between and pulled forth the soul of a young man five years dead and proceeded to scold him to within an inch of his afterlife.

I MAY, the personification conceded, BE IN OVER MY HEAD HERE.

Title: Cut the String
Characters: Granny Weatherwax, Sephiroth
Series: FFVII/Discworld
Rating: G
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100

Granny Weatherwax regarded the thing shaped like a young man with the kind of cool detachment that sent most intelligent monsters off on some hereto-forgotten errand. "Mother, is it?"

"It was your kind that trapped Mother," the Something answered. "I've come to repay the debt."

Granny narrowed her eyes. "I know you."

Jenova swung Sephiroth's arm. The sword sang.

"Boy," Granny said loudly, "if she was a Cetra, why would she kill her own kind?"

The sword halted in midair, then dropped as Sephiroth clutched his head. Granny Weatherwax pressed a palm to his heart, helping him fight the infection.

A/N: The Leap continues…

Aerith paused, fingertips brushing leaves as time skipped again.

A SOLDIER, falling from the sky…

With a crash, the moment repeated – but not exactly. This SOLDIER had blond hair – and he wasn’t alone. A ghostlike man stood watch over him where he landed. “Sam! Wake up, Sam!”

Aerith called out, hoping to wake the SOLDIER. “Hello… Sam?”

The ghost blinked. “You can hear me?”

The SOLDIER groaned and opened his eyes. “Where…?”

Aerith gasped softly as fair hair and blue eyes were superimposed by dark hair and brown eyes, eyes that had seen too much of both despair and hope.

He smiled stiffly and nodded, hoping that the brunette who seemed to know him bought the act. He felt more out of his depth than usual, mind more disconnected from body than ever before.

Excusing himself to the men’s room, he paused before the mirror and took in the unfamiliar reflection: Japanimation-style blond hair, good muscles, crazy big sword. “Okay, what am I supposed to do here?”

His ghostly friend hit a few buttons on the gadget he held. “Uh oh. Ziggy says you have to save the world by defeating a super-soldier who thinks he’s a god.”

“Oh boy…”

Yes, it’s Quantum Leap, and they still used the term Japanimation back then.  :3  In the words of Captain Jack Sparrow, I couldn’t resist, mate!
