Prompt #112 Babe in the Woods
Characters: Barret and Marlene
Team: Avalanche
Word Count: 100
Rating: G
Note: Opening line is from Cormac McCarthy’s ‘The Road’
When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he’d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him.
If she shivered, he covered her with a soft blanket. If she stirred in her sleep, he soothed her with a gently murmured song. What else could he have done? Abandon her to some orphanage where she’d never know how much she’d been wanted? No, he owed it to his friends and their memory to care for the little girl as his own.
He had no idea if he’d make a good parent but one thing was certain…
“Marlene will never, ever be unloved , I’ll see to that,” he vowed, whispering the words to the ghosts of her parents.
