It was a hot, abysmal day where salt-laden sweat clung to my upper lip, beading into little droplets that slid from my face to the bathroom floor and having long since cast off my typical robe so that I could lie naked on the cool tiles to revel in the barest hint of relief that I received, I closed my eyes to will Cait Sith to work faster on the air conditioning unit and though I was fortunate for his size to be able to fix the device, the fact that this was his fault did not slip my mind.

“Sir, I’ve studied under the company’s records manager and it’s imperative that we discard of old records. Not only are we running out of space, but you don’t want your enemies to undercover something you don’t want them to see when in fact you should have thrown it out ages ago.”

“Are you suggesting I have enemies?”

“I only work in the basement library, I don’t live there. Surely anyone can surmise as much.”

The Librarian sighed at the remnant of the basement library. Research notes and reports that should have been discarded years ago littered the floor.

“I told him about implementing a records retention policy.”

When he smelled burning, the Librarian ran to the safe to rescue the backup copies of the records. Fleeing the mansion on the outskirts of Nibelheim, he was determined to preserve the information.

Fumbling in his pocket, he located a hastily scribbled phone number.

Taking out his cell phone, he dialed. “Hello, Rufus? Oh, hello Tseng. May I speak to Rufus, please? I have what he wants.”

Roving has always been, and still is, my ruling passion, the joy of my heart, the very sunshine of my existence.

There is freedom in not being tied down. I go where I please and without being too committed, I am able to go where I am needed.

Relationships complicate things.

Yet, I still find myself drawn to them.

When I seek the solitude, I am never truly alone. It is in my wandering when I uncover warmth within the depths of my soul. If I stop in one place too long I lose touch and I need to reconnect.

I am fortunate that there are people who understand - Even if they did force me to buy a cell phone.

The creature landed on his open palm and for a brief moment, he was reminded of something...

“Impossible.” With a quick movement he plucked away one of its wings and listened to it scream.

“Utterly useless,” he muttered.

I was making my rounds among the SOLDIER boys, when I came across a BIG one. His blood ran hot.

Now all my leech-mates told me not to, but...

I feel more powerful, more alive. I can hear the thoughts of my leech-clan clearer than ever before. I can control them one by one. This SOLDIER doesn’t even realize I’m here. But, if I continue to hold on, maybe I can control him too…except wait…this is too much…I…I…can’t break free!!

SPLAT!!

Zack shuddered awake from the nightmare. “Man, it sucks to be a leech.”

“You can wear a sports bra,” Cloud said, before shutting up.

“Sports bra?! You think that’ll stop these girls from moving around?” Tifa sighed, pulling on her leather vest. “I have to wear this custom made or else it makes fighting difficult. Jumping is the worse.”

“Tell me about it,” Cloud muttered, absently adjusting his pants.

As the recruit prattled on Tseng massaged his temples and sighed.

It was going to be a long day.

Shelke stilled in the digital world that surrounded her holographic body. A hand gently touched her cheek and she leaned into it. The graphics fizzled and Shelke lost her concentration, her awareness brought back to the chair.

“Problem?”

“No.”

“Your new assignment is to locate Vincent Valentine,” Nero said, handing her a dossier.

Cloud shivered uncontrollably on his first night watch. Rookie recruits always pulled this duty. The sooner his body became accustomed to being awake at night, the better.

“Coffee?”

“Sir?!”

Zack grinned and sat next to him. “Your eyelids glued open yet?”

Cloud shook his head and sipped the coffee, making a face at its taste.

“It’ll keep you alert,” Zack said. “Another tip on a cold night is to tap into your mako. Running it through your bloodstream will keep you warm. You don’t want your limbs frozen if you have to raise the alarm.”

“Thanks, Sir.”

“Call me Zack.”

They laughed and Tifa smiled.

Laughter.

It was one of those rare things that filled the bar.

Cloud walked in and the kids immediately ran to his side, asking him where he delivered today.

In moments like this - Tifa felt they were a family.

She was long overdue for her menstruation.

She closed her eyes and lifted the paper as the the lab door opened.

“Is that blue I see?”

Nausea rose in Lucrecia’s throat and mako-laced fire filled her vision.

“You don’t look well,” Hojo murmured. He took her trembling hands, felt her pulse racing at the wrist. “I have an escort outside the door to take you to a special room. I’ll ready your meals and injections for the next nine months.”

“But…my experiments..”

“…are under my supervision.”
