“Awful,” Yuffie said, shuddering. “But still — maaaan, that’d probably be the biggest heist ever. Shinra’d have a fit!” Grinning broadly, she called, “Hey, Cloud—”

“No,” came the immediate reply.

“Fine.” She stomped her foot. “Just wait — we’ll get it someday, with or without you!”

Check outside. Dead guard at the end of the hallway. Definitely something fishy going on.

When he woke her, Tifa reacted similarly, so he knew it was real this time.

Don’t question a perfectly good escape opportunity, now.

Cloud nodded absently. “He should have the key on him… There.” He straightened. “Come on, get Aeris. I’ll go help Barret and Red XIII.”

Every night while Aeris slept, she’d dream of… staffs. Sturdy sticks she’d use to knock muggers upside the head, or sweep people’s legs out from under them, or — in some of the weirder ones — use even to beat up dragons and sahagin and something strange and sinister that made her skin crawl. And these strange dreams grew increasingly common, until she could hardly close her eyes without seeing polearms.

“Y’know,” she finally snapped one morning, “you could’ve just said something if you wanted me to so badly!”

Elmyra blinked.

Thus ended Aeris’s knives practice.

As Gast helped Ifalna pack up the last of their few belongings, Vincent turned to the children. “Are you two ready?”

Sephiroth nodded reluctantly, though his displeasure was clear on his face. Aeris, however, was more vocal.

“No!” The ten-year-old girl scowled. “Just once, I want to say goodbye to my friends first!”

“You can’t.”

“Why not?”

Vincent merely looked at her, and Aeris huffed in frustration. She already knew the answer.

“How much longer will we be on the run like this?” asked Sephiroth quietly.

“The rest of our lives, probably,” answered Vincent.

Such was the price of freedom.

Editor Strife sighed, shaking his head. “That’s probably one of the most overblown premises I’ve ever heard,” he said. “…And yet it’s just the sort of thing our readers would eat up.”

“So you’ll…?”

“We’ll take it.”

“Point taken.” The chocobos were always Cloud’s top concern.

“C’mon, then,” said Zack. “If we hurry, we’ll get there by sunset.” He urged his big black onward.

Cloud called to the flock, sounding almost like one of them, and they thundered down the ridge, hot on Zack’s heels as he led the way.
