Sometimes it was Zack. He was facing the firing squad, prisoner tag cold against his tanned skin, and he’d grin and throw a last defying ‘fuck you’ before the soldiers opened fire.

Sometimes it was Cloud. He was badly bloodied, his rifle in hand as he shot at an overwhelming monster. His face was fierce and stubborn and it would remain that way when he fell, shredded by talons a foot long.

Sometimes it was both. They were on the ground, still and lifeless, and it was their blood on his blade. Sephiroth feared those nightmares more than any other.

The Lifestream put a lot of things into perspective, if you gave it time. With Jenova now fully gone, Sephiroth had all the time in the world. As such, many things were made clear to him before Vincent Valentine's almost un-aging body finally crumpled. Sephiroth was not surprised when the man sought him out to talk. 

"Sephiroth, Hojo was not your father. I am your father," the ex-Turk declared evenly, unruffled. 

"I know," Sephiroth answered on the same tone. "Lucrecia spoke with me."

There was no reply, and Sephiroth only caught the impression of a half-smile before Vincent Valentine was gone from his side.

The Highwind was too damn useful sometimes. When Cloud walked up to him and asked for a couple of back-and-forth between the Gold Saucer and the ranch, again, Cid wasn't always polite about what he thought of indulging the idiot's mothering instincts. He accepted only for two reasons. One was sitting in his bracer right now, but the second took a while to manifest.

"What?" Cloud looked up in surprise.

"Lemme ride."

The races had to have some thrill to them if Cloud was ready to do it all the time; Cid intended to take his fair share of it.
