A flurry of laserfire spattered the ground; shredded grass flew into the air, but the yellow-gold blur never even hesitated.

Starscream swore in fluent docklands Cybertronian and fired again, then shrieked at an even higher pitch than usual as tough clawed feet hit his plating. The chocobo bounded up him before the Seeker could think about moving, landed squarely atop his helm and, with a gleeful wark, pecked him.

"Aaaagh! Megatron! This is all your fault!"

As his noisy second-in-command screeched, Megatron charged his cannon.

The damn bird chuckled, bounding down and warking for them to keep playing.

Honestly, most of the people he was used to defending were pretty - odd. This guy was one of few to actually ask to be found guilty, though.

"So, um, mister - Sephiroth?" Phoenix shuffled his notes, aiming for friendly competance. "Can you tell me how all this started?"

Uncanny green eyes glanced up; if it weren't for the utterly defeated, broken look about him, Phoenix might have been intimidated. "It doesn't matter. My crimes are my own, no matter what Mother said; the penalty is deserved."

"...Mother?"

"Yes - Jenova. She told me to destroy the planet."

"-Hold it."

The last thing to be expected when Scarlett wanted volunteers was a cloud of cotton candy. Sephiroth only knew what cotton candy was thanks to an unfortunate mishap involving Lieutenant Fair and his hair; he neither wanted to get that close to it again, or be forced into fighting a large, dense sentient cloud of it.

"Wrooorgh!"

He sliced the soggy mass into what Zack called 'pineapple chunks' - then stared in horror as the globules became smaller, faster versions of the original.

When the group of small, brightly-coloured reptiles appeared and began to eat the globules, Sephiroth gave up.

Sephiroth glanced swiftly around the clearing, noting the number of opponents and drawing Masamune in one smooth motion. Monster-hunting was, by practical assumption on the part of anyone who had done it more than once, a mission class that could and did become something further out of the ordinary than may have been expected. It was always better to come over-prepared than othewise, on the chance that the monster which was supposedly a one-off had suddenly acquired a pack, or when the small, unassuming monster started breathing fire.

Being charged by small, shrill Sleipnir-alikes with ridiculous hair was comparatively unusual.

Starscream sat, perfectly at ease, smirking in the manner of someone who can keep it up all day just as a casual thing and could amp it up indefinitely as the need arose. Megatron was stomping around outside playing at the conquering tyrant, and let him - Starscream knew what was important in life. First dibs on attacking a city was fun, of course, but why risk losing the spoils?

He swung one foot idly, engine humming in an appreciative register while his latest pet gadget worked away beside him.

Green energon was bizarre, but the powerboost was worth it.

"So, amnesia and genetic mess-ups aren't interesting, huh?"

"Bumblebee, now is not the time to give a game critique." Optimus crouched to give the poor battered box a wary once-over. The screen had frozen on an overview of a dark, smoggy city, a sprawling black and grey metropolis. Whatever Sari had managed to do, from the looks of it Jazz was on his own.

...With some very pissed-off Decepticons.

General Sephiroth, as a rule, did not boggle. No matter how bizarre the situation, even if said situation involved a certain Lieutenant Fair.

Granted, this particular situation was further out of his remit than usual...

Zack was no help, bouncing and chattering; when confronted with a giant war mecha, the normal procedure was to verify it as rogue - if there was time - and stop it from destroying everything, not to ask it for an autograph.

"So," the giant robot said, perched crosslegged on the ground and grinning amicably, blue optical visor glowing bright. "You dudes come here often?"

He couldn't move - a dull, grating whine filled his ears, pulsing with his heartbeat and the blue lights dazzling his eyes...

"Cloud," he croaked, heart aching. "You have to-"

"Hullo," a tall stranger said, sauntering over with hands in his suit pockets and a wide, cheerful grin. "I'm the Doctor. What's going on here, then?"

Furious, Jenova screamed.

"Why are we here?" Cloud growled, blue eyes icy. "We know Sephiroth's the murderer." Sephiroth looked away, still and resigned.

"Mais oui, monsieur, but Poirot's little grey cells have been busy. I can only conclude," and here the pause was significant, "that the good General was influenced by some unseen hand."

Author's Notes: It's an idea that's been bugging me for a while. How much of Sephiroth's madness was Jenova's influence? How much of his will was his own? Can I get away with Sephiroth coming back from the dead as many times as the canon did?


"...I don't believe you."

Cloud eyed Rufus warily, but the other man's visible agitation seemed worryingly genuine. "Whether you believe me or not is immaterial now. You stopped him before-"

"No thanks to you," Cloud growled.

"-And we have to hope that you can again," Rufus finished, audibly tense. "When Jenova's head fell into the Nibelheim reactor with Sephiroth, it used his DNA to create a new vessel, one it could control completely."

"Everything after the Crater...that was all another clone?"

"An extension of Jenova's will," Rufus said quietly. "We now believe that the original has resurfaced. In Nibelheim."

Cloud shot upright with a stifled gasp, arms out to grasp something that had already fled; he glanced over, saw Tifa lying peacefully asleep in the bed beside his, and silently, silently curled up under his blankets, his long-broken heart aching.

It was warmth, coccooning heat and comfort, held in a blanketing grip closer and more welcoming than anything he could remember. Despite the danger, the threat to the presumed civilians in the buildings, he had never felt so completely, utterly safe.

It was that unnatural, terrifying calmness that disturbed Sephiroth the most when he awoke.

It had been little more than a week since Zack had discovered Sephiroth's new...peculiarities. They had unanimously agreed not to let Hojo know about Sephiroth's little attachments, but as the pearls affixed to him grew steadily larger avoiding the doctor was becoming a problem in more ways than one.

"Okay Seph, clear!" Zack hissed over his shoulder as Hojo stalked away; the Demon of Wutai poked his head out of the supplies closet, glanced around with healthy suspicion, and slid through the open door.

When your inner tentacles had increasingly tender egg-sized pearls attached, you'd find running difficult too.

He didn't turn as Zack ran up the steps; pain tore through him again and he slumped to his knees, palms to the glass.

When Zack reached him, Sephiroth was curled on the floor with his arms wrapped tight around his swelling abdomen - his skin felt ready to split, and Jenova seemed to be smirking.
