Elmyra had given Aerith the compass after she had received official confirmation of her husband’s death. She quietly explained that Aerith’s mother had pressed it into her hands just before she died, that it was part of her birth rite, but that she would have to figure out herself how to use it.

It didn’t take long for the young woman to realize that she could use it best in the run-down church where she grew her flowers. There she felt safe enough to listen to the voices, and the alethiometer, as the voices called it, translated them for her.
