No matter what Tifa said, it was still Cloud's birthday, and that meant there needed to be a cake. And Marlene and Denzel were exceptionally smart for their ages, everyone said so. How hard could it be?

"I think cake batter's supposed to be runny," Marlene offered as Denzel prodded at the mix dubiously with a spoon.

"I don't think it's supposed to be that color," Denzel returned, making a face. "Maybe there's too much chocolate sprinkles in-"

"Kids!" Tifa called. "I'm home!"

Both kids froze, staring at the unholy mess they'd made of the kitchen. "Uh oh," Marlene whispered.

It was anathema to her, poison, and this time it pressed against her with power she had not felt since the days of the Cetra. Sometimes it smiled at her sweetly, and she knew the beginnings of fear.

But in the Lifestream, Jenova came upon the shattered soul of her son, and clutched it tight.

She would rebuild.
