THE GAME. The game starts on already inauspicious terms: the sky is bleak and grey, and threatening to rain on everyone in the stadium. The Trabian Varsity team is nearly all replaced from last year: the captain is clearly a Lucan or Kilikan transfer, judging by her accent, and the rest of the players look like they've done nothing but train in the sphere since last season. They also have brand new breathers, engineered in Trabia, which one of the teammates boasts will significantly improve their performance. And it does. [ONE VARSITY PLAYER] sustains an injury from a high-speed foul, and by half-time, Trabia is up by four points. The team rallies for the second half the game, [FARIS SCHERWIZ and SHUYIN VEGNA] quickly scoring two points--when the game is suddenly interrupted by a scream from the stands. THE BATTLE. More screams follow, as members of the audience begin pointing frantically at the sky. A massive black-green dragon cruises easily over the stadium and away, and then turns around and flies back, roaring. T he stadium erupts into chaos. Weapons are not permitted--they are locked up in security at the entrance to the stadium. The cadets rush towards security as the visitors mob the exits, while [VALMAFRA LENANDE, FIGHTER MORROW, AND TSENG] try to maintain order. Stadium staff quickly start draining the blitzball sphere, but not fast enough. The dragon makes another pass, much lower, and [ACE RYUSAKI] volleys a lightning spell at it--prompting the dragon to fire back, breathing giant concussive fire blasts at the sphere. Two Trabian cadets are caught in the half-drained globe, as well as [FARIS SCHERWIZ], who sustains minor injuries. Headmaster Cid and [BARRETT WALLACE] gain hold of a bullhorn and begin issuing orders. [ALL UNDERCLASSMEN - FIFTH YEAR AND BELOW] will be responsible for getting the sorceresses and visitors out of the stadium and into the nearest building; [ALL UPPERCLASSMEN - SIXTH AND SEVENTH YEARS] will retrieve their weapons, split into three units and be led by the first three upperclassmen Cid sees: [LIGHTNING FARRON, BARTZ KLAUSER, and ANTONIO LUZZU]. Teams are indistinct, the leaders grabbing whichever cadets are nearest [CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE]. The dragon doesn't land right away, instead flying around outside the stadium as the students and sorceresses evacuate. It blasts at the ground, knocking [FILO WATERS, ALMA BEOULVE, and 1 CADET] nearly into unconsciousness, before landing briefly. The groups waste no time: while [LOCKE COLE, NOOJ BARS, AND RUBY ARGENTE] continue getting the civilians and younger sorceresses to safety, [YUFFIE KISARAGI, OERBA DIA VANILLE, ZELL DINCHT, LULU, FIRION SKYRUNNER, VENKA VAVRA and YUNA SIN] quickly launch an assault. Both sorceresses summon a single Aeon while the cadets start a more physical attack--but after barely a minute of fighting, the dragon lifts into the air, followed by the Aeons, and heads back for the stadium. The other cadets are ready, having assumed positions around the stadium for a three-pronged attack. The dragon roars into view, followed by the two Aeons--one tailing the dragon in the air, the other leaping up the walls of the stadium after it. The dragon crashes into the stands near Bartz's team, who waste no time in attacking as the other two teams converge. The fight is fierce: the dragon's hide is almost impenetrably thick, only susceptible to basic weapons at its joints and on its wings. [OERBA YUN FANG AND BARTZ KLAUSER] summon their Aeons, who quickly become the dragon's greatest threats: it takes out one of the sorceresses' Aeons and sends a cadet's crashing into the stands, but not before nearly incapacitate it. Strangely, the dragon seems more bent on defense than offense, and many of the cadets sustain only minor injuries. Back outside, as the last stragglers are led into the school, [PHILLIP WEDGE AND MIKOTO BRAN BAL] hear a girl shouting. Blonde and bedraggled, she comes running out of the fields south of Balamb, clutching something to her chest. Her name, she says, is Ovelia Atkascha, and she's been following the dragon since they escaped from Midgar--she's the only one who can stop it. The cadets rush Ovelia back into the stadium, where the remaining cadets have surrounded the dragon warily. It's greatly weakened, bleeding in the stands, but no longer attacking. With one last huff it collapses, and the cadets begin calling for stop and float spells so they can get it somewhere safe, when Ovelia and the two cadets enter. Ovelia is carrying some kind of materia. Someone casts a stop spell on the dragon and protect on Ovelia to keep her safe, and she carefully comes up to the beast to equip the materia into a small metal casing at its throat. Within moments, the materia activates, and the dragon begins to shrink. Half a minute later, in its place, is a terrified and bloodied young woman, who quickly faints dead away. Neither of the newcomers has time to explain, as Headmaster Cid orders their immediate detainment in his quarters for questioning, telling Xu to get Kadowaki up there to examine them. |
