There was only one path through the forest but it weaved all over the place and Chance knew if he followed it he would never get out of the forest before nightfall and he didn’t want to be around when the Hoothoot woke up, Hoothoot in his experience were especially nasty owing to their limited ability to use psychic moves. So Chance decided he would cut straight through, using his compass to keep him pointed in the right direction. It actually seemed to work pretty well, Chance didn’t encounter a single Pokemon for two hours although he did jump at small noises and branches brushing up against him.
The first Pokemon he encountered were not alone, two Weedle hit him with string shot to try and get him to hold still while a couple Paras and an Oddish charged at him, Chance took this as his first opportunity to use Lucky.
“Lucky get rid of these guys with your water gun!” Chance commanded, thinking he sounded pretty cool shouting attacks. Lucky blasted the Weedle and Paras away first but he wasn’t quite quick enough to stop the Oddish from Chance with stun spore who accidently inhaled some before batting it away, the Oddish was immediately dispatched after that, leaving Chance coughing a little but generally still feeling alright.
“Thanks Lucky, you’re a life saver, here have a treat before you go back into your ball.” Chance fed Lucky a poke-block before recalling it into the ball and continuing again. For the next half hour it was more silence but Chance started to notice his chest felt strange, sort of tight like his shirt had shrunk, then he realized it wasn’t his shirt or his chest, his actual lungs were having a harder time breathing. The stun spore had gotten to him after all but he could still walk and it didn’t feel serious so he continued on, another hour of silence and Chance was starting to feel fatigued, he even caught himself panting heavily as if he couldn’t get enough air and corrected it, he couldn’t affort to hyperventilate and pass out here.
He entered a clearing with a massive bush dead ahead, he would have to go around it but as he approached something inside shuffled around, there were a few excited scuttling noises and then all at once two Parasect and several Paras jumped out of the bush and hissed at Chance menacingly. Instantly Chance called out Lucky again who took out the Paras with ease leaving just the two bigger foes to deal with. While Lucky was distracted trying to get rid of one Parasect however the other took the opportunity to attack Chance, first with stun spore which left Chance coughing again and then with slash which Chance narrowly avoided by ducking behind a tree, he could feel his chest seizing up further.
“Lucky I need your help!” He called just as Lucky sent the first Parasect scattering with a water gun, Lucky tackled the one after Chance and drove it away with the same tactic, they both moved on speedily after that. Chance could see the sky was starting to get darker and sunset couldn’t be more than two hours away. He jogged for a while but eventually stumbled to a halt coughing his lungs out and leaning against a tree for support, feeling light headed, the stun spore was really kicking in now, it was a chore just to heave air in and out of his lungs. He didn’t have the foresight to get himself any medicine either, just stuff for Lucky because he had promised the old daycare couple to take care of him. After regaining himself a little he started again at a brisk walk and for another hour it was quiet again. He emerged back on to forest path again which meant he was close to exiting the forest, a good thing too as the daylight dimmed. After a short while on the path however he noticed an odd buzzing noise, at first he dismissed it as some sort of ringing in his ears but as it grew louder he knew it wasn’t just his imagination. Glancing behind him frequently he moved as fast as he could comfortably and slowly through the forest shapes began to emerge in the distance, they were dark and non-distinct at first but as they got closer and closer Chance recognized them as being from one of the nightmarish experiences of his childhood. It was a whole swarm of Beedrill headed straight for him and if they caught up with him it was all over.
He broke out into a full out run, immediately his lungs burned with the effort and he felt like he’d been running for miles but he knew he had to do it, Beedrill were fast and if he didn’t run he wouldn’t stand a chance. He ran for maybe half an hour like that but the day was weighing on him he was sweating now and it was getting into all the cuts and burns he received earlier, his bruises ached along with his muscles and he was getting extremely light headed but the final stretch emerged and not a moment too soon, the Beedrill had gotten into attacking distance and stingers started flying past him, the dreaded poison sting attack, he tried to weave a little to make himself a harder target to hit but one grazed his leg and it started to burn like fire, still he limped on, he could see the exit doors of the forest dead ahead, the buzzing sound reached his ears and he got a plan, carefully he released Lucky into his arms.
“Lucky I’m going to hold you over my shoulder and you try to hold off the Beedrill for me okay?” Lucky nodded and Chance hoisted the turtle up so it could see over his shoulder, it started firing water guns backwards, pushing some of the swarm back, poison stings still shooting past him, almost there, the door was so close he just had to-
“Ahh!” He cried, his thoughts interrupted by a horrible piercing pain in his left shoulder blade followed by a terrible burning feeling, he stumbled, everything seemed to spin as he hit the doors and went through them hitting the floor on his side with a thud before everything went dark.
“Oh my god!” A girls voice cried as Chance made his entrance, she and two boy trainers had been having a friendly conversation about weather or not they should head into the forest and travel at night, the girl ran over to Chance instantly to try and wake him but she nor Lucky could get a response, she turned to the two boys.
“Don’t just stand there with your mouths open you idiots go get some help!” she yelled at them and they obeyed instantly.
