Rant on avoiding a villain monologue
I’m sorry to have been gone so long. Major health issues as well as writer’s block on the rants meant that I had little to post. While I think I’ll be posting more regularly again, I can’t promise it.

    _____________________________________________________________________________

This rant brought to you by Magic Bites, an urban fantasy novel that I read recently and liked well enough—with the exception of one major irritant. I bet you can guess right now what it is.

This is a temptation, yes, but there is a difference between feeling it and giving in to it )

Villain monologues irritate me for the same reason that idiot plots do: there’s no reason for them to exist, not when you have so many interesting tricks to avoid them.

    Dreamwidth rules!
Dreamwidth kicks LJ's butt again by adding the Admins Only security level (no more need for separate comms for Admins who want to talk privately!) and icon keyword renaming! YES! Now if you change the name of an icon, the other posts with the icon don't revert to default; you can choose to change them to the new name! So very cool, I've been needing this! :D :D :D

    Quick Question:
How long should I wait for an answer after asking someone if they would be willing to beta a fic of mine?

I'm asking because my Yuletide support group buddy already heard back from the person she asked and she asked later than I did. I've been waiting for two/three days now, and I know that I am online far more often than other people, so I really don't know if it's reasonable to get a little nervous or if it's still normal response time. I've also written to people before who just didn't notice my message and wrote back to say sorry after a couple of months, so ...

I've been awake for too long
They're doing inspections next week, so I spent more than I should have to get cleaners in. So that was me having to be awake from around noon to around two. But it doesn't stop there, because I am expecting a Hookah-Shisha.com package from UPS, and the only way I can be sure of getting a UPS delivery without a hitch is by having the door open. Thankfully, the screen door latch is fixed! But UPS is yet to arrive, although the tracking info says all is well.

Did I mention that it's raining and chilly? 43 may not be cold in New England in December, but it is in Texas. And the rainy, especially, makes me stiff and sore.

I've got semi-plans with [info]doombuggie, but if UPS doesn't show soon they won't be able to happen :( I'm miserably cold and stiff anyway. I just want to be warm.

    It lives!
Just got back from first day at work, which consisted of mostly boring theoretical training.

Awesomepoints: only the porter misgendered me, everybody else who adressed me in a gendered fashion today already knew me from last year. My temp ID card was correct, too. These little things mean the world.

I met ex-colleagues in the cafeteria and did social things, like talking to people. Really looking forward to proper work tomorrow (and meeting my two favourite superiors again).

Not-so-awesomepoints: I'm dead tired. Seriously. I'm gonna check my feeds and email, and then I'm off to bed.

PSA: I have the late shift for at least two weeks from now, which suits me just fine. (I liked working nightshifts a lot, as evidenced in this IJ entry from 2008. Also, getting up early would kill me.) However, it has the disadvantage of being online less often, and thus chatting/commenting not as much as I used to. If you don't hear a peep from me for the next days or weeks, it's because of work effing up my sleep schedule / leisure time / energy levels. (Sadface.)

This is a charming friendship story with a Neal and Peter that I just love, and that strike me as quite realistic. It's gen, but you can easily read it as pre-slash or pre-OT3. I really, really like this one. ::clutches it close::

The novels for this game arrived yesterday along with the collector's edition of the guide book and what a nice book it is indeed. Mainly for all the history of the world stuff that is in the back, I love world building and seeing how much effot went into creating the game world fills me with joy espically as a lot of the stuff in here wasn't used in the game at all.Like what the different noble title mean and how they come about as well as a history timeline. Anyone planing to write fanfic for this game whould really love the amount of background info on the world in genral.

The book itself is hardback and has really good quality paper, the game guide is well written and the concept art in the back is beautiful. Really looking forward to using it in my next playthrough.

On a sidenote I finished playing through Sherlock Holmes and in the end I have to say I really enjoyed it. The banter between Holmes and Watson really made this game as well as the fan in jokes like Holmes complaing that everyone seems to think he wears a deerstalker all the time.

    Dear Writer's Block...fuck you.
So lets see, nothing really going on right now except for the fact I should be working on my English paper but instead totally writing this. Oh, and doing laundry. Because laundry is amazing and all that. So what's been going on? School. School. More school. Thanksgiving. And me giving up on NaNo about 20k in because school just took top priority and therefore, couldn't really get the time to plot like I usually do. Plus, work's been kinda skitish to say the least. However, I am going to end up writing more of it, because I do love the universe that it's set in, even if I found like, 4 plot holes already in the prequel that need to be tied up, but that's okay.

Speaking of writing, I've been looking over some of my other series. Like Angel of Oblivion and fell back in love with Senna, and Kaggren, and all the dragons of both Heaven and Hell. I need to finish the rewrite of the first one and keep going with the second, because I was kinda surprised on how good the second one was turning out to be and my rewrite of AOB (Yes, I know that the actual acroynim is supposed to be AOO, but AOB just rolls off the tongue so much better!) I isn't as bad as the first draft. That everyone seemed to love on fictionpress. I still don't get it and I guess that I never will.

Thanksgiving was fun. Walked to mom's because for one, she moved closer and I wanted to see how close she is now. About an hour of walking, which isn't bad. She has a really nice place though. It's one of those duplex things where it's like having half of a house. It's a real nice set up and they're right next door to my Uncle Adam and Uncle Phil so if they need help with anything, family is like, right there. In fact, all of us were back and forth the entire day, which was pretty cool I have to admit. And it's going to make visiting a lot easier, which I'm happy for. I miss not being able to see my mommy at the drop of a hat.

Sooo...that's really about it. I really should get back to my paper. Hopefully I can churn out more of a sentance. Then I have that stupid 7 page research paper to get on. I have all the research, and the notes, all nice and in the notebook. It's just trying to get them into coherrent senetences that's going to be the "fun" part. I can't wait!

    Peace,

    shouldn't be this awake psycho

Tonight I started posting my fics on A03, and I just have to say: SHINY!!!! I'm totally geeking all over the little icons. And the page layout is so sleek and readable! Love it! *pets lots* Tonight I got up all my Alles Was Zählt stories -- and if you guessed that "angst" would be my most popular tag, you would be right!

Only thing that's not so shiny is that although I got my account a week ago, I was waiting to see if they might sort out the umlaut (or lack thereof) problem before I posted. Didn't expect someone to dive in there first and enter things like "Deniz Ozturk" and "Alles Was Zahlt" *winces in pain* I went ahead and entered everything spelled correctly, and I'm hoping the tag wranglers will realise that Ozturk=Oeztuerk and connect them. (Not that it's a big fandom or zillions of people will be confused or anything. Correct spelling is just one of my pet peeves inherited from my grandfather, who always insisted he was "Ó Briain, not O'Brian, for feck's sake!")

Anyway! Tomorrow I'm moving on to Merlin, then Harry Potter -- tonight I entered everything manually, but I think I just might play around with the spiffy importing feature. I have fewer stories in those fandoms, but they're longer/in multiple posts.

Beta means we're supposed to try to break things, right? *g*

Bedtime now. And I've still got the same grin I've been wearing for hours!

Randomness from the Star Wars Holiday Special
So. I've pre-populated the tags for the named characters from the special now. Including Lumpy and all three of his synonymous names.

So now we're all set to run a Star Wars Holiday Special characters challenge.

    ;-D

I think my favorite part of this OMGWTF fandom wrangling has to be this:

"Though scenes of Chief Bast conversation with Darth Vader cut from A New Hope were included in The Star Wars Holiday Special, Bast's presence with Tarkin during the final moments of the Death Star shows that this is not the same officer."

"The lookalike officer in the Holiday Special has not yet been identified. His connection with Bast, if any, has not been explained."

I swear, there's a wookieepedia page for each of them... "This article is about the Imperial officer. You may be looking for his look-alike..."

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Moradmin_Bast

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Unidentified_Moradmin_Bast_look-alike

    I mean. Really. SRS BZNZ.

And no, I did not pre-populate the unidentified look-alike. X-P

So, NaNoWriMo 2009 is officially over! I won once again, which means my record is perfect. :) This year's story kind of got away from me as I didn't have a plan going into it, and I never did figure out exactly what the story was I was supposed to be writing. The last couple of days of writing was mostly rambling, and though I will get a Create Space code for a free proof copy, I think I'm going to use it for my novel from last year, as I never got around to redeeming the code before June because of a bunch of unanswered questions that were magically answered before NaNo started this year. :D I managed to write on my novel every single day this month, which makes me insanely happy, and I'm hoping I'm able to keep up the habit, as this is the first time I've attempted to establish a writing habit, and actually stuck with it. I'm kind of glad NaNo is over though, so I can focus on the rest of the semester and trying to keep my grades in the B range in order to keep my scholarship and remain on the Dean's List.

Speaking of school, I'm glad I have less than three weeks (well, more like 2 and a 1/2) left in this semester, as I've been pushed and shoved all over the place with the family issues I've been dealing with and struggling to figure out exactly how to get a good grade in half of my classes, whether it was because of not knowing how to really study for the material or not knowing what was expected of me from the professor. Even though I'm taking 20 credits next semester, I'll be happy to get it started, as the schedule I have is much more agreeable to me, and I'll have a buddy in at least two of my classes for sure. Plus, except for one class, I'm in all Accounting or Finance classes, which should help with learning the material and having it stick.

...so I'll borrow someone else's words: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single girl in possession of a large bandwidth must be in want of German pseudo-porn starring a pair of gay ice skaters. And if Internet legend holds, every time a new subscription is added to Eskimo Kiss Project, somewhere in the world a fangirl gets her wings."

Quick rec: "The Border House" gaming blog
The ABOUT text for this blog is as follows:

“The Border House is a blog for gamers. It's a blog for those who are feminist, queer, disabled, people of color, transgendered, rich, poor, middle class, gay, lesbian, and others who belong to marginalized groups, as well as allies. Our goal is to bring thoughtful analysis to gaming with a feminist viewpoint and up-to-date news on games, virtual worlds, and social media.”

And it actually has members of these groups as contributors! See chooseareality's intro post for an example; she's a trans woman and a lesbian. (Text might make you choke up a little, for mostly good reasons.)

(I need a better angry icon)
People do not teach their children boundaries these days. For example, by the time I seven or eight I knew not to go crawl up in the bushes in front my neighbor's house, peek into the window, and make scratching noises and hiss at the cat in the window. The little shits in my neighborhood, however, can't seem to grasp the concept that doing that is wrong. I'd go out there and give the little bastards a piece of my mind if I wasn't sick and in my pj's.

I guess I shouldn't have expected manners from the brats considering how, a year or so ago, they thought it would be fun to randomly open the front door and let the cats outside. It was unlocked because it was daylight and my dad and I were both home. That, of course, does not happen anymore; the front door is locked and/or barred at all times now. As it should be, honestly.

Maybe it's because the kids on the cul-de-sac I live in are mostly boys. (There are a few girls and I haven't had any problems with them.) I don't know. I do know that if it happens again, I'm going to scare the crap out of 'em. And if their parents say anything to me, well, I'll just tell them they should teach their kids not to peep into other people's windows.

A while back I was looking through a collection of brochures for different programs at my school and caught myself thinking "wow, there're a lot of women on these brochures!" Then I thought "I wonder how many there are, exactly," and counted. End result: 13 women, 17 men, and a few I couldn't positively identify. Hm.

I think part of the reason I thought it looked good was that they had women on the brochures for "male" fields (CS, engineering) and men on the "female" fields' ones (nursing, I believe also culinary arts) so I was expecting good numbers too. But there's also the male default here. I noticed the women. The men were to be expected. I remember reading about a study where men and women were shown videos of conversations and asked who had dominated them, and they thought women were dominating conversations when the time taken by men and women was equal, and saw balance when the men talked more.

Another case of that crops up in the apparent "crisis" in American Judaism. That most religions are and have historically been run by men isn't an issue, but as soon as one appears to be dominated by women, it's a problem. Note that the only man quoted in that article as saying that gender imbalance isn't a problem is speaking from a place where men are the majority -- that kind of imbalance is fine, people!

Have I mentioned lately that I'm tired of misogyny?
