Paperwork and Candy Goodness, Oh My! [closed to Raidou and Ren]
It wasn't often that Raidou requested anything from her, especially information, considering he was mostly an in-field agent but that just meant Ren had to world all the harder to put her notes together. It was silly to even worry-- she was meticulous in her work. She loved her work and took the utmost care with her research, not just for the purpose of having other agents be able to read it but because she really adored it. She had spent nearly half an hour gathering the files and papers together on the criminal Raidou wanted an update on, adding little notes and post-its (some making their way into her hair or on her clothes) to make sure that Raidou could clearly understand all of the language and technical terms used. Not that she thought he was stupid and she was super smart or anything but she just wanted to be as helpful as she could.

Loaded down with the volumes of notes in her in her arms, Ren meandered her way up the stairs, teetering dangerously every so often. She had nearly bumped into two ANBU members running down the stairs but managed to get up all the way without killing herself or anyone. Luckily Raidou lived right near her, so once she was finished talking with him, she could go back to her room to cook dinner. Researching always did make her hungry.

"Excuse me~" she called, tapping on Raidou's door with her foot since her arms were full. "Raidou-san~ Are you in there?"

Raidou was dealing with a small problem. Well, actually, several small problems. He was leaning against the counter of his kitchenette, studying a cooking book thoughtfully and regarding the mackerel laid out on a chopping block that, for some reason, refused to be deboned neatly. He scowled. It made no sense. He was a ninja - a good ninja - and he was used to handling small sharp blades with precision. The mackerel, however, didn't seem to think so.

Irritating fish.

He glanced up at the knock on his door and put the book aside with some small relief. An excuse!. Then he went to open the door, forgetting the knife in his hand and the liberal application of fish scales that had gone... everywhere.

"Ito-san," he said, greeting the Intel agent with a blink at the stack of papers in her arms. The colorful post-its in her already colourful hair were also worthy of a second look. He relieved her neatly of most of her burden before she fell over -- Raidou was a nice guy that way -- and glanced at the notes held in his hands, eyes flicking to the name written in neat kana. Idane Satomi -- his missing nin friend. Excellent. Raidou resisted the urge to rub at the bandaged wound around his upper arm (mostly because his hands were full) courtesy of that particular missing nin, and gave Ren a nod. "Want to come in?"

It always took her by surprise when someone used her surname, especially when it was her coworkers. Before coming to ANBU, everyone addressed each other by their given names. It just seemed more... familiar that way. She very much appreciated the gentlemanly way he took the papers from her and invited her in. That seemed familiar enough! Or polite really but she would take what she could get.

"Thanks! Sorry for the bother," she sang cheerfully, sliding her high heeled sandals off at the door. Ren ran her hands through her messy hair absently, blinking and laughing sheepishly when her hand came back with a neon green post-it. "And really, you can call me Ren! I--" she blinked down at the floor, wondering what it was that she had stepped on. It was small, plastic-y and metallic, something like chipped nail polish. Instantly she noticed the semi-mutilated fish and put two and two together. "I'm sorry, am I interrupting your dinner?"

It was hard to imagine Raidou being domestic but the image made her giggle a bit. He was big and brooding and just exuded MAN, thinking of him wearing an apron and cooking was just... too adorable for words. "Do you want me to come back?"

Well, she was cheerful. Raidou set the notes down on the small island that separated his very small kitchen from the rest of the room and watched as she noticed the disaster attempt at fish cookery. If anything, it seemed to make her more cheerful. Raidou twitched one shoulder in a shrug and dragged a hand through his hair, accidentally adding more glittery fish scales. "It's more of an experiment, really," he said, slightly embarrassed.

Irritating fish.

Raidou moved back to the counter, turning his back on Ren, and debated between continuing or just throwing the lot in the trash and cooking noodles. Continue, he decided. It wasn't like mackerel were all that cheap. He glanced back over his shoulder, regarding the little Intel agent thoughtfully for a moment, and then shrugged again. "You're welcome to join me. If you don't keel over then I'll know it's not poisonous." He smiled slightly, a crooked quirk of lips, and turned back. "So, did you find anything out about Idane?"

Food was all well and good, but work came first.

For such a cool and composed guy, Raidou was bumbling quite a bit in the kitchen. Ren was trying her hardest not to laugh and to look professional but he had so many fish scales in his hair that it was just so-- so funny! It wasn't often that a member of ANBU looked so disheveled. "Your um-- your hair," Ren bit down on her lip and reaching over to pull some of the scales out. "You should be careful of that. I don't really want to pry or brag or anything but I'm pretty handy in the kitchen. I could help you and talk at the same time. I'm very talented like that."

Ren wasn't usually so good at multitasking but if cooking was involved, she could do it easily. What could be better than having dinner and talking with a good looking guy? It ranked pretty high up on the list.

Without getting an answer, she walked over to the sink to take off her rings and wash her hands. She gazed down at the fish. "I think you were using a knife that isn't sharp enough. If you use a sharper, thinner blade then you can cut more neatly. A lot of people think a bigger blade is good but a bigger blade is best for thicker meat." There was still time. They could still save the fish and make it delicious.

Remembering her promise to update him at the same time she added, "Oh and there's really nothing to worry about concerning this prisoner. There was no signs of serious mental illness or even sociopathic behavior. The other agents have reasons to believe everything he said was the truth and got quite a bit of information out of him. The details of that," she gestured towards the papers on the table, "are all in there. Do you have any salt and pepper?"

Raidou jerked his head back slightly before he realized Ren was going for his hair and not his face, he blinked at the fish scales she extracted. Oh. Well, way to look professional, Namaishi. Then he blinked again as he was summarily nudged neatly out of his own kitchen with a cooking tip and a cheerful smile. What the...?

Right. Okay then. Raidou swallowed the urge to protest that he was a good cook, thank you very much, and fish were just... tricky, and instead took himself back to the notes she'd bought, intending to flick through them. He leaned against the counter and spread them out neatly, but instead found himself watching a little curiously as Ren set about fixing the damage to his attempted lunch. "The cupboard next to you," he said, in response to her salt and pepper question. He glanced back at the notes, "so are they trading him back to Rock or just putting him down?" It didn't really matter either way. Raidou rubbed his arm with a slight scowl, feeling the edges of the bandage. Personally he preferred the second option.

Standing on her tippytoes, Ren reached for the spices, sprinkling a little bit of both on the fish once she got the bones out and cleaned it properly. It was going to be simply grilled on the stove but it would turn out delicious, at any rate. "Ah-- I guess the second thing... though I thought only animals get put down? I guess you meant execute because that's what they're going to do. Or is this just ANBU terminology?" she looked thoughtful as she searched for a pan and some oil. "Do you like to cook? It looks like you cook often. I guess if you don't want to eat cafeteria food all the time."

There was something extremely satisfying about the sound of the fish sizzling. The smell was so delicious-- maybe she could add some herbs... would Raidou mind if she went through his refrigerator?

"You really don't have to read through all the paperwork I gave you. I guess I went a little overboard," she relented, tapping her lip thoughtfully. "It's pretty interesting though. Oh and just be sure to put it back with all the other files when you're done. The higher ups throw a FIT if everything isn't in order."

"Animals and missing nin," said Raidou, perfectly deadpan. "Sometimes particularly annoying Genin if they're having a slow week." ANBU terminology? You could look at it that way. Perhaps it was just the language of the cynical. He glanced over the paperwork -- it wasn't anything he hadn't expected; some old information on Rock -- out of date now, that was the problem with interrogating missing-nin, sometimes they just didn't keep up to code with the latest news from their old villages -- a few more interesting bits about Mist's latest movements, and everything Idane had been doing for his soon-to-be-over ninja career. It looked like Intel had really put him over the rack. Raidou didn't feel particularly sorry for him.

A lot of Konoha ninja bore less then amicable feelings towards Rock. War did that to people.

"Cooking's a bit of a hobby," he said as he turned a page, careful to keep her order intact. He would've done that anyway, paperwork was enough of a bitch without scrambling it up. "And if I'm going to get food poisoning, I'd rather do it at my own hands then get taken down by the cafeteria." Which wasn't exactly inaccurate. Raidou had been into the ANBU cafeteria once or twice, he had no desire to repeat the experience. "And you? What's your excuse?"

"A man's heart is through his stomach," she laughed, spooning the fish onto two plates. It smelled so good, so, so good after going without eating for so long. She was really insatiable. "Actually, it was just something fun my mom showed me how to do when I was younger and I continued with it. It's relaxing... plus I don't have to eat at the cafeteria very often. It's kind of a win/win situation."

Ren put the plates on the table, sitting down and waiting for Raidou to do the same. She was really happy-- this was so much more fun than sitting home and eating alone. "It's also an excuse to feed the poor, undernourished ANBU members who don't take care of themselves. Maybe that's my true calling?"

... that could be a good career move when she retired.

Raidou snorted and sat down, pulling one of the plates towards him. "I'd stick with the Intel if I were you," he advised. "You'll have more free time that way." If there was one thing ANBU had in spades, it was agents dancing on the edge of personal self-destruction. But that was what made it a party. "And less heartache." She seemed nice, it'd be a shame for her to get bitten for that.

Ren was also a pretty good cook. Raidou eyed his fish, impressed, and called up an automatic simple jutsu, checking for poisons. Just because she seemed nice didn't mean she really was. He didn't think Ren would actually try anything, but thinking and knowing were two different things, and Raidou wasn't about to let his guard down for a pretty face. Only rookies did that. Short-lived rookies.

If she'd put anything in his food, it wasn't registering with the jutsu. Raidou shrugged, catching her look, and tried his fish. It was, in a word, excellent. The hard lines of his face softened a little into a half-smile. "Give your mom my compliments, she's a good teacher."

Free time? Raidou had no idea how much time she spent on her research, did he? Well, most ninja in the field had no idea so it wasn't really his fault. "I already have no time as it is. I eat, sleep, and breathe all the research I do." She really was too trusting, not even thinking about poisons in the fish. It was trust like that, that was probably going to get her killed one day. Death by food was better than death on the battlefield, anyway.

The red head slid her rings back on, digging into the fish. This was a lot of fun. She was really happy that she came over when she did. "It's a lot nicer to share food with someone than eat alone. I kind of envy the other ninja that live at home with their families and kids and get to eat with them."

That was her dream situation-- being at home with a family, surrounded by kids... and her books. That would be perfect.

Raidou blinked at her and then laughed very quietly, a low wry sort of chuckle. "No, see, that was the joke," he explained. "Either way you're going to have no free time, but you start taking care of the idiots that can't look after themselves and you're going to have even less then that." He paused and considered, "Okay, so it wasn't a great joke..." It wasn't like people expected him to be a comedy ninja anyway.

Raidou ate his fish slowly, taking the time to enjoy it, and studied his unexpected company thoughtfully. As Intel geeks went, she wasn't exactly the status quo. Young for one thing -- younger then him, he thought -- pretty for another, in a sort of little-girl way (it was probably the colourful post-its, she still had an orange one in her hair) and so very... cheerful. That was either one hell of a mask, or she had taken to ANBU the way a lot of people did; with their own unique brand of insanity. Or she was a rookie. All were good guesses.

"I don't know," said Raidou, "I think I like it here. It's peaceful." He smiled faintly, "I have three kid brothers on the outside. That gets old fast." He had no qualms sharing that particular detail, unless Intel were a lot worse at their jobs then he gave them credit for, they already knew that. "How long have you been in ANBU?"

"About two years now," she stood up, collecting the plates, intending to put them in the sink to wash them. "Not as long as some of the others here. How about you?"

Siblings. Ren wasn't close with her sisters at all, so when she heard of other peoples' siblings part of her was jealous. She always wondered how her life would have been if she had been closer to them or her parents. They were all just so busy in their own lives that they had no time to do "family" things. Her father was very much of the old school-- he believed as ninjas they had no time for such things. Maybe it was true but Ren like a little bit of normalcy in her life. Even just for a few minutes to pretend that she wasn't in the business of killing would have been nice.

Two years? Definitely not a rookie, then. "Five for me," said Raidou, getting up to steal the plates neatly. Getting kicked out of his own kitchen was one thing, but he didn't intend to let Ren clean up, too. Besides, she might not do it right. Raidou had fairly exacting standards. "Since I was nineteen. Joined up just after the fox." And that was a fun story with no good memories attached, he twitched a shoulder and knocked the thought aside, making his way to the sink.

Raidou wasn't renowned as a thinker. He wasn't a genius like Hatake, or that creepy-ass Uchiha kid, and he wasn't a ninja who’d made their trade in studying people and playing them for it, not like Genma, but neither was he entirely clueless. He'd definitely caught that expression flicker on Ren's face when he'd mentioned his brothers. There was probably a story there, unless he was missing his guess. "They're not so great," he said, even if the slight smile on his face called him a liar, "They're loud and messy and they break your stuff. Mostly they're a pain in the ass."

Raidou missed his brothers a little, he'd have to go see them soon.

There was something really endearing about a guy who cared about his family. Guys were always like this, though, never showing their affection but instead complaining about or teasing the people they loved. If anyone saw Raidou walking down the street, they would probably think he was a pretty scary guy. His scars didn't help his case, though they didn't bother Ren at all. He was a really nice person, despite the gruff exterior. Ren liked the see the good in people but it wasn't hard with Raidou.

"Yeah? I think it sounds fun. And I bet they really look up to their big bro," Ren grinned. "I'm kind of thirsty-- do you have anything to drink?"

Maybe they could do this more often without work attached. Or even have the whole floor get together to have dinner! Everyone was so funny and they probably all didn't get along with each other but they could certainly appreciate eating with more people, couldn't they? Wasn't everyone looking for that little bit of normal in their lives? Maybe it was just her and everyone else was happy with the way things were.

Raidou blinked at the dishes in his hands for a moment. "Sure," he said, without glancing over his shoulder, "there's beer or juice in the fridge, help yourself. Just leave the beer from Sand? That's hard to get ahold of." And Genma would kill him dead if he just gave it away. "Or I can make coffee, but it might be a little strong..." Death coffee being its official name. Raidou was serious about his coffee.

I bet they really look up to their big bro.

Huh. Well, maybe they did. Raidou pulled a slight face at himself. It was a nice thought, but nothing to get hung up on. He turned to glance at Ren for a moment, and made his face neutral again. It was a nice thought if she meant it genuinely, but it was also a fairly easy compliment to toss out if she had a different angle. And she was Intel, which made that more then likely.

Definitely nothing to get hung up on.

"So do you cook for everyone you update," he asked a little wryly, "Or did I just get lucky?"

"This is nothing!" she trilled, reaching into the refrigerator to get the a bottle of regular old Konoha beer. She wasn't much of a drinker but it was nice every so often after a meal. "If I was wearing lingerie or something then maybe you would be getting lucky. Then again, it's rare that I cook and update at the same time... so maybe you are luckier than the other people in this building?" Ren opened the bottle of beer and took a swig, sitting back down at the table and crossing her legs lazily. As soon as she took that sip, a small wave of relaxation washed over her.

Ah, this was the life.

"I can do waaaay better meals than this. Not that this wasn't good but sometimes it's fun to get fancier. Baking is good too," Ren shrugged and rubbed the back of her neck, picking out yet another post-it. Where did all of them come from?? "The next time we have to work together, I might even bring cookies."

"Lingerie, huh?" echoed Raidou, amused. "I'll bear that in mind." An ANBU veteran who knew good food, wasn't afraid of a beer, and definitely had to curves to pull off lingerie. Not bad. Shame she was an Intel chick, though. Raidou finished the dishes and stacked them before getting a beer for himself. He leaned back against the island counter-top, rather then joining Ren at the table. He couldn't quite relax with someone new -- and an unknown quality -- in his room, but for all that his body language wasn't tense. He canted a hip and rested his weight easily to one side, bracing himself on an elbow.

"Don't have much of a sweet tooth," he said, in response to her cookie comment, "But I wouldn't say no to decent food." Raidou eyed Ren again, without actually staring. He had a level gaze, with sharp dark eyes that remained just a little fierce even when he was relaxed. For all that she was cute and - apparently - sweet and hadn't done more then give his scar a cursory glance (something of a rarity), he wasn't feeling much beyond a vague friendliness.

Perhaps the fish had been poisonous after all.

"So do you ever do mission runs?" He asked, for the sake of conversation, "Or is it all research for you all the way?"

What was with all these guys not liking sweets? It was probably one of those male ego things that she just couldn't figure out. He sounded like her last boyfriend-- the married one-- who refused to eat anything sweet because it wasn't something guys did, apparently. Who made those rules, anyway? "I have run missions, I don't just sit at the desk... mostly. Usually when something needs to be remembered or memorized without being obvious, I'll be sent on missions. I have a good memory."

That was a bit of an understatement. Her photographic memory was both a curse and a gift-- she couldn't forget. Anything. Even when she wanted to, she couldn't. It was good for Konoha but not so much for her psyche.

"It's a nice change once in a while, I think. Sitting in a library for too many hours could make anyone go crazy," she took another sip of beer, wondering why it was she felt his gaze so heavily on her. It wasn't uncomfortable, per se, but it made her worry about her usual little gestures and clumsiness.

Raidou set his beer down and ran an absent hand through his hair, picking up a few more fish scales as he did so. He regarded them with annoyance for a moment before wiping his hand on his pants leg. 'Irritating fish' was becoming the mantra of the day. The next time he'd just stick with tofu and be done with it: just as much protein and a hell of a lot neater. "You ever find yourself out in the field again, you'll probably end up running with me." He smiled faintly, "Back up is sort of my specialty. But I imagine you knew that already."

Back up for the Intel geeks, back up for the seducers, back up for anyone with a difficult job to do -- that was Raidou's place in the world and one he was perfectly happy to occupy. Meat shield extraordinaire. All part of being in the canon fodder club.

He picked up his beer again and took another sip, leaning more comfortably. It wasn't bad as beer went, certainly not Konoha's finest -- his brothers needed the money more then Raidou needed the beer -- but it wasn't half bad. "That's about as much library as I can stand," he said, nodding at the set of bookshelves behind her. His reading material was a bit of an eclectic mix between passably good fiction and several painstakingly collected and much read works on philosophy and war. Raidou was really quite proud of the latter.

Raidou could certainly back her up whenever he wanted, considering he was built like a brick wall and seemed to have one of the most serious work ethics of the ANBU bunch. That was probably one of the reasons it was so funny to see him in a casual setting struggling with things like food. It shouldn't have surprised her, really, because every ninja had a life outside of work. When she was younger she was almost shocked to see her cell leader or academy teacher buying groceries or doing anything outside of teaching. Somehow, the idealization of the ninja was not someone who bought bananas at the market or cooked. Now, being an elite ninja herself, she knew better.

"For a long time I really thought that instead of being born to parents that I just popped out of a book at the library," she said wryly. It was a theory that Ren had made up as a child to make herself feel better after the sheer neglect from her mother and father. It also explained, at least in her young mind, why she didn't look like anyone else in her family. "Sometimes I still think that."

Ren hiccuped a bit after swallowing too much air following her sip of beer. She put it down on the table, making sure to pace herself. The last thing she needed was to act like a drunken idiot in front of her comrade. Her tolerance was okay, though not nearly as up there on the chart as the guys she hung around.

Raidou's lips twitched in a slight smile at Ren's hiccup. Lightweight, he thought, amused, go figure. Either that or still a good actress.

Raidou was content with his paranoia. It had served him well over the course of his life. He was not about to let a good thing go.

He took another sip of his beer -- Raidou's tolerance was not something he had to worry about, especially not after one drink -- and set the bottle down on the counter, leaving his fingers loosely curled around the neck, thumb automatically over the mouth. Also a good habit to get into, particularly when a fear of poisoning wasn't without precedent.

All good ninja were paranoid, and all ninja -- good or otherwise -- had someone in the world more then willing to kill them. It evened out.

"Not got much in common with your parents?" he guessed, watching a look he couldn't place ghost over Ren's face.

She laughed really hard at that, so much so that she was glad that she wasn't drinking anything because it would have come out, quite embarrassingly, of her nose. He really hit the nail on the head without even realizing it! Was it some sort of sixth sense? Ren had gotten her love of books from her father who was, after all, not a blood relative so did that even count? She and her mother were as different as night and day, bless her mother's kind yet confused heart, and she almost never spoke to her older sisters. It was kind of like being an orphan with parents.

"Um no," she managed to get out with the laughter calmed down, "not really. I'm kind of the oddball of the bunch, if such a thing is possible in a ninja village. They're not bad people just... just involved with doing their own thing, I guess? But it's fine. I turned out okay for the most part."

"Okay" probably wasn't the right word to use, considering how strange Ren was and how strange her taste in men was but Raidou didn't need to know the dirty details. Village gossip did all of that for her.

Raidou blinked at the sudden laughter, wondering if he'd done something inadvertently funny. He was reaching up a hand to check for more errant fish scales when Ren recovered enough to speak. Raidou lifted an eyebrow and gave her a swift look over with a small smile, "I'd say as ninja go, you're pretty much par for the course, normal-wise." She hadn't foamed at the mouth or tried to bite him yet, that already gave her a plus ranking over some ANBU he'd met. "Of course, I've only known you twenty minutes, so what do I know?" Underneath the underneath and all that. You never knew how many layers a person had.

Raidou picked up his beer and moved to look at the paperwork Ren had brought with her again. She would have to take it with her when she left -- classified information was rarely let out of the sight of an Intel agent -- so it was worthwhile reading over it while he had the chance.
