Empathy Is a Good Thing, Right? [closed to Genma, Arisa, and Kaito]
[Set the morning after Expletives Don't Cover It, one and a half days after Better Than It Was]

Raidou was still recovering from his back injury, so he wasn't up for a morning spar. That was fine, Genma decided. After an invigorating but abbreviated run, since he was still getting over his cold, and a quick check that he didn't have any missions assigned, he opted to use his morning on mental pursuits for a change. After all, training was a continual process. You trained the body for combat. You trained the mind for analysis, intelligence gathering, seeing beneath the underneath.

It was totally a mental exercise, and not nosy curiosity, that sent him down to Intel at a quarter past ten.

In fact, it was a testament to his knowledge of the workings of ANBU's spooks and analysts, that he knew that there would be fresh coffee and donuts now, and that his inside source, Haga Arisa, would be taking a break from her duties as Mission Coordinator Level Two. Which was a fancy way of saying she was one of the powerful few who determined whether you got sent to Mud Country in the rainy season, or a cushy gig guarding a princess at the seashore.

This was just routine information gathering. After all, Raidou had said he'd been assigned to look out after this rookie Kaito as a specific mission. After he got his back sliced up rescuing the kid from some kind of capture on a seduction run turned bad. And he'd mentioned a genjutsu bloodline the kid couldn't control. These were all important things to know more about, since Raidou was his best friend, and Raidou had been saddled with this kid. It would undoubtedly fall to Genma to pick up the pieces at some point or another. Better to know what those pieces were going to be.

He slipped into the Intel lounge and sauntered up to Arisa, leaning over her shoulder to peer at the magazine she was perusing. "So what's gonna be the hot color for summer? Should I do my nails in teal?"

"Teal is the new pink," she said deadpan, and turned to grin at him over her shoulder. "What brings you down here? Looking to grease up the important people for a new mission? Don't think there's anything you'd want at the moment, buddy... But if you're really interested, I take bribes in the form of chocolates and kisses." She waggled her eyebrows. Hey, anyone of the seduction crowd was always fun to have willingly in bed. They were good at what they did, and it wasn't like Genma was hard on the eyes.

Her grin broadened. "If you want something really juicy, chocolates and kisses might not do it. Maybe a foot massage..." After all, he didn't come to this section of HQ terribly often. It usually meant he was fishing for something, and ninja who weren't trading in blood generally traded in favors. She didn't, currently, owe him any that she could remember.

"Now what makes you think I'm fishing?" Genma asked with a rakish grin. He eased himself onto the yellow pleather loveseat next to Arisa, stretched his legs out in front of him, and slipped an arm behind her back to start massaging her neck. "Maybe I just like you and want to make sure you're having a good day."

He kissed her cheek and chuckled. "You Intel types are always so suspicious."

She angled him an even more suspicious grin, paired with a look. "Uh huh. Well, as long as you keep the magic fingers going, I might consider giving you the information you're not fishing for. Oooh, a little to the right..." She craned her neck, grinned broader, and let her eyes fall closed.

She had a fifteen minute break, and if she took a little more than that, well... it was worth a mini-massage.

"So you know I'm buddies with Namiashi Raidou," he said. Of course she did. She probably had some kind of enormous file listing every agent and who they were friends with, who they couldn't stand, who worked well together, who were former lovers and shouldn't be assigned together come hell or high water. It was her job to know these sorts of things.

"I heard he got assigned to babysit some rookie kid. I wanna know what the lowdown is here. I never even heard of one agent getting assigned to be another's caretaker before. Even that bastard Hatake doesn't have any special minders, does he?"

"Ohhh, yeah," she said thoughtfully, though the case sprang to mind like any one of the dozens of files updated in the last few weeks. Older ones took a bit longer; a few seconds to remember, rather than less than one.

"No, Hatake doesn't need any special minders. Whatever you think."

She pretended to think, letting the massage continue. "Chuunin rookie. Your Raidou's his babysitter, huh?" She laughed. "Poor guy. Everything about him's a bit foggy--he's really only got half a bloodline. Those never come out quite right." She shrugged. "I think Namiashi-san's supposed to keep him in once piece until we figure out what he can do." Her mind worked, ticking over information. "We're looking for more fields trainers for him..." The grin that spread over her face this time was a little bit wicked. She slanted a look at Genma. "They've dumped him into seduction arts for the moment, you know."

"My Raidou?" Genma chuckled. "Nice to know how you guys think about us poor Hunter working slobs." He kneaded harder at her neck, watching her face with a growing sense of dread. He could smell the stench of that particular corpse a mile away. That glint in Arisa's eye that said she'd decided she was going to solve her next problem by sticking you in the middle of it.

"Dumped him on seduction arts?" he asked evenly. "What do you mean dumped? And who'd he get assigned to for training? Not me, obviously, or I'd have picked up a memo already."

"Well, he didn't apply," she said, enjoying the way Genma was so carefully not squirming. You had to have a thread of sadism in you to like being in Intel, after all. "And we assigned several people for training, but it didn't stick." One eye slitted open, peering at him. Waiting for him to take the bait.

Training didn't just not stick. These rumors were juicy. Genma was going to owe her this time. And she knew what payment she was taking.

"What do you mean it didn't stick?" Genma asked. "Is he a moron or something?" His hand ceased its work on Arisa's slender neck, slid down to her shoulder blades, digging in with slow, easy circles. "And several? What several? How bad is this kid? If he sucks that bad at seduction, put him in something else."

He knew he was being baited. Knew Arisa was enjoying getting a rise out of him. He also knew how to play the game just as well as she did. She wanted him to react, and if he did, she'd reward him with more information. It was like playing Go with Shikaku, you had to think several moves in advance, and make sure not to get captured on one area of the board while you were focusing on another.

Arisa turned to sit sideways, facing him, her grin widening with the knowledge of great gossip. "Not a moron. Not if he's in ANBU. He flew through the chuunin exams with hardly a scratch on him. But we assigned Hajime-san to him for seduction training, and Hajime came out crying. Psych kept him in therapy for two days before the higher ups just signed him out. Said it wasn't his fault. Meanwhile, the kid gets a brief interview and nothing else."

Except, rumor had it, a hug. She didn't believe that. It was obviously just too much hype from the fall out with Hajime.

"The fuck?" Genma mirrored Arisa's shift in position, tucking one knee up and sitting on his hip, facing her. His arm still trailed across the back of the couch, though for the moment the massage was interrupted. "What kind of training could possibly make Hajime cry? I mean, we're talking the suavest, iciest guy to ever throw a wink at a target. Hajime's as cool as they come."

Of course Raidou had said the kid's bloodline limit triggered this sort of diarrhea of emotions in the people around him. Damn, that was scary. "Hajime's gonna be out for blood if this kid's freaky jutsu got him locked up in psych. Better assign him something where he can take it out on the target."

Arisa waved a hand negligently. "No no, this was almost a month ago. He just avoids the kid. Says the brat makes him uncomfortable. But after that they sent Etsuko-san in, figuring she was, y'know, warmer." She stopped there, grinning, waiting for Genma to work for his gossip.

This was worth the work.

Her eyes glittered, locked on his dark ones. Having an ANBU hunter waiting for your every spoken word was brilliantly fun.

"How many men have told you you're a tease so far? You keeping count?" Genma shifted a little bit and patted his lap. "Come on, foot. And spill. What happened with Etsuko and this poison rookie?"

He had a bad feeling about this. Although the gossip was utterly juicy. If only Raidou hadn't been involved, he'd have been nothing but gleeful.

Arisa scooted back, plopping both feet in their sandals up on his lap. He was a tough negotiator, that was the truth. She grinned.

"Rumor has it that the training flopped again. Etsuko didn't come away crying--apparently they had a night of great sex. Well." A lift of her shoulders gave an eloquent shrug. "As great as you can get with an eighteen-year-old, anyway. I'm sure he was enthusiastic. And you know, young guys and their stamina." She waggled her eyebrows.

"But Etsuko was pulled in because they had sex, but no training. She forgot. The final guy got the rookie's full dossier and was also reprimanded for incomplete training, but that was on purpose, he claims."

Which meant now they had a seduction rookie who still didn't have any training. Luckily, she had one pro sitting right in front of her...

Genma removed the sandals and dropped them to the floor. He started with a slow, firm sweep of the arches of her feet, and grinned when she curled her toes in response. It wasn't such a bad deal, really, rubbing Arisa's pretty feet and ankles, with her cute little painted toenails, in exchange for this extraordinary news.

"I seem to recall you liking young guys. Stamina will make up for inexperience at least some of the time. Although obviously experience and stamina are what you really want." He winked.

"Maybe you should train him yourself. Also I totally need to go rag on Etsuko about this. She seriously just boffed the kid all night and didn't teach him anything?"

"Mmm. Stamina will make up for all sorts of inexperience. Sadly, I'm not allowed to train him up." She sighed happily and leaned against the back of the loveseat, enjoying strong fingers. "But, yeah. Boffed him all night and taught him--well, I suppose he must have learned something, but not seduction arts."

With a smile, she let her head rest against her hand. If she told him too soon about her new plan, he'd never continue the footrub. "Whatever his jutsu does, exactly, our higher ups think it'll help in eros missions. But without training..." She shrugged and smiled innocently. "So I suppose I need to find someone else to get him into shape."

"Well what about Matsudaira? He's been training people for shit like this forever, and he worked with that Yuuhei chick, right? The one with the genjutsu eyes? I mean, yeah, he's old, but maybe this kid needs someone with a lot of experience like him."

He worked his hands up her calves now, teasing out knots of tension on her shins, kneading the backs with slow, deep strokes. "Mmm, you haven't shaved in a few days. Break up with your latest conquest, or are you seeing someone who likes you hairy?"

Hairy? She wasn't hairy! So it had been a few days! So what? She debated kicking him, and decided not to at the last moment. There were eviler things to do. "I think Matsudaira is probably too old for a teenager. At least until the rookie's getting paid for screwing a guy that ancient. Young kid like that needs someone attractive. Someone who knows what he's doing."

She smiled serenely. "Someone like Otoshi Amari would have been perfect, if she weren't dead. That woman knew things... things she only passed on to a few of her students. If only there were one of those around. One young and pretty enough for a kid to be comfortable with, who knew those tricks, preferably who lived in HQ since that's where the kid's been put... hmmm... who can I think of like that..." She smiled and batted her eyelashes at Genma.

"You are not doing this to me!" Genma ceased his massage. "No way. No. It's bad enough you've done it to my best friend. And don't you dare think you can just throw Amari-sensei's name at me and I'll bend over and take it like she taught me to."

He could feel the whole thing sliding right out of his control. Because of course Arisa not only could give him a mission assignment like that, she would do it in a heartbeat. Especially if she knew it would make Genma squirm.

"I set you up with that guy from Forgeries that you had the thing for. I brought you the dirt on that love triangle that was brewing in Maps and Recon so you could fix your mission assignments and not have treasonous actions from lovelorn idiots to deal with. This is completely... No. No, Arisa."

She just grinned at him. Kitty had her mouse thoroughly cornered.

On Genma's mental Go board, his cluster of black pieces was entirely ringed by her white ones.

Arisa's eyebrows rose. "I can't? Seems to me if your buddy is already involved, you three make a perfect little family! You'll have to let me know which of you decides to be the uncle." She pulled her feet back; no more chance of a foot rub, now. But at least she got a wriggling Hunter! "Besides, that guy from Forgeries? Totally had genital warts." She shuddered delicately.

"So, definitely time for you to--how'd you put it? Pass on your knowledge and teach the kid how to bend over and take it like Amari-san taught you." Ohhh, he was going to make her pay for this. That was fine, though. It was worth it. "Hey--you might even enjoy it! Etsuko did. Granted, you don't have any experience in teaching seduction, but if you fail repeatedly they'll give you more leeway for it! Plus, the rookie's right across the hall from you, so it's perfect! And, you have to learn sometime."

Definitely worth it. Game, set, match. She smiled.

"You are an evil bitch," Genma said, pushing to his feet and crossing his arms in the most childish of gestures over his chest. He had no room to maneuver at all. No way out of it. Although despite Arisa's rather crude point, maybe it was better if he was teaming Raidou on this. Not that Raidou'd be teaching the kid seduction, but at least he'd have some backup. They could back each other up.

"Fine." The pout was evident in his voice. "I want to see an actual mission assignment. And it better get me some decent money if I'm going to go expose myself to this unknown emotional blackmail jutsu where we've already got three senior agents on the books as having failed. I think that ought to get me and Raidou both hazard pay."

He glowered down at Arisa. Pretty, devious, treacherous Arisa. She was going to seriously owe him for this.

"Hazard pay?" she laughed. "Hey, I think you should be grateful. This'll give you access to the little punk's records, which means you know what your buddy will be up against. And as a first training assignment, the higher ups won't be expecting much from you, since three senior agents have already failed!" She stood, still grinning, and headed toward her desk.

"Besides, I don't get the impression he needs much help. They've already sent him out..." She pulled up the proper files on her computer, entering access codes rapidly with an automatic henge to hide them. "Twice, on seduction runs. So presumably they expect him to do all right even without the training." The smile she turned on Genma was cheerful. "So maybe he's extra pretty." Which didn't explain the crying on Hajime-san's part, but... Who knew what an emotional blackmail jutsu might do? They obviously didn't, or they'd have more information on the kid.

This was why clans just needed not to mix with anyone else.

"Extra pretty, very funny. And what was that you were saying about how you expect me to wash out on this, too?" Genma kept up the disgruntled half-pout as he followed Arisa to collect a sheaf of papers she'd printed out for him. Everything there was to know about Morioka Kaito. Or at least everything Arisa thought it was relevant for Genma to know. When she handed him an official mission assignment document, though, he knew it was no good bitching anymore.

She'd tapped in just a few details. Agent assigned: Shiranui Genma, 010203. Task: Mentor Morioka Kaito, 013984. Eros Training. Briefing: Handled by Haga Arisa, 009443 on 03/05. Further information: Available from Haga Arisa, 009443.

"I'll be talking to Hajime and Etsuko." As if that were some sort of threat, and not the obvious next step he would have to take in order to approach this assignment.

"Remind me not to come down here next time."

Kaito put his brand spankin' new lava lamp on the counter that separated the main room and the kitchen--kitchenette? Something like that--and stood back to admire it. He'd even managed to get some of his stuff put away since he'd gotten in the day before--there was a little closet where he'd shoved his clothes. It hadn't occurred to him that he'd need hangars, so they were just lumped on the floor. He'd gone out to buy hangars, but then he'd found this purple beauty and, well, a few wrinkles wouldn't hurt anyone, right?

He had a futon, and there was a cafeteria downstairs--though talk about a nasty surprise when he'd found out you were supposed to pay for the food--and there weren't any windows but there was a nice overhead light that already had bulbs in it!

Everything was clean, too, and it smelled like new paint. The carpet was even soft on his feet when he took his shoes off, rather than sticky tatami mats like his old place. When he curled his toes, they sank into the rug.

And now he had a purple lava lamp. Grinning, Kaito rocked toe to heel, hands braced on his hips, and stared around his apartment. Maybe he should get shelves or something. Somewhere to put his stuff. Yeah. Definitely.

A few hours of reading the files Arisa had given him on Kaito, visiting Hajime and Etsuko, and a couple of cigarettes later, Genma found himself outside apartment 319, literally right across the hall from both his and Raidou's apartments. He looked down at the papers in his hand and cursed. Now that he thought about it, it was a little too convenient. They'd set Raidou up to be this kid's special big brother or whatever the fuck he was supposed to be before they'd even sent him on that retrieval mission. And they'd probably already earmarked Genma for Eros Trainer number four--talk about unlucky omens!--even before he'd gone down to talk to Arisa. It was too neat. Too clean. It was exactly the sort of manipulative shit Arisa and her sadist Intel buddies down in Mission Ops liked to pull.

Well. Might as well go and see what the deal was with this kid. Maybe he'd be normal. The dossier said the genjutsu bloodline thing only activated when the kid was under stress, so all Genma had to do was not be stressful, right?

He stashed the folder in his own apartment, checked the cleanliness of his teeth and the hang of his pants in the mirror, then went across the hall and rapped lightly on the door.

Kaito jumped and looked around at the knock. A smile bloomed across his face. Atsuo had said ANBU would be full of a bunch of sociopathic baby killers, but so far he'd only met nice people. Granted, that was Raidou and guys at various desks, and Raidou had to be nice to him, but it was still hopeful, right?

He took two quick strides to the door and yanked it open, scruffing a hand through his hair to drag it out of his eyes.

The man on the other side of the door was Kaito's height, with dark brown hair and golden eyes. He was broad shouldered, lean with muscle, and quietly deadly in that way some ninja had.

Kaito shifted from foot to foot and had the sudden thought that there weren't any windows, and if ANBU was filled with sociopathic--

"Hi," he said at last. "Help you?"
