[Takes place March 20th, two days after Hit the Mark and the day after No Explanation Necessary.]

Kaito slept for twenty-four hours after he and Natsumi got home, woke long enough to take a piss and drink some water and then went back to sleep for another twelve. Another piss, more water, feeling his raw, over-used pathways finally starting to ease off, and more sleep. Eight hours that time, and when he woke the sun had set.

Kaito staggered down to the cafeteria, ate, and staggered back up the stairs to bed. He really hated soldier pills. They made his pathways sore--and he wasn't used to using his bloodline limit pathways for any length of time. They'd have been sore anyway, but add to that artificial chakra and... ugh.

At least they'd gotten Osamu home. He wondered what had happened to the guy afterward. Poor miserable bastard. )

Make Me Better [Closed to Waki, Tsume, and Kuromaru] [Apr. 29th, 2009|04:40 pm]

[Takes place March 23, about an hour after Carry Me Home]

Waki pulled his gloves off, twining them together absently. Rhuemy eyes remained trained on his patient.

His patent stared at him with a one-eyed golden gaze. His patient's familiar stared at him with a two-eyed blue gaze. Neither of them blinked.

"Well." He dropped his gloves in the waste bin and tucked hands covered in veins, like blue worms over skinny tendons and arthritis-inflamed knuckles, into the pockets of his lab coat. He turned and looked at the dog. It sat on the examining table, tongue pale though he'd regained some of the weight he'd lost. Scars knotted across one eye socket and the opposite ear. Scars that had been created by a brilliantly crafted rot-jutsu, and a leap into friendly fire. The decay had nearly killed the animal, crippling his pathways. The treatment had used up all the chakra he had to spare. He wouldn't have survived the most effective surgical strike: they'd gone with a less effective one, and hoped it would work.

It hadn't.

Waki didn't beat around the bush. "We didn't get all the rot."

Chemical Lessons. [Closed to Kaito and Raidou] [Apr. 29th, 2009|11:32 pm]

[Takes place two days after Girls! Girls! Girls!.]

Training Kaito was a complicated business, much like elephant ballet, or brain surgery. But with more yelling.

Tossing the kid into the river every time he messed up had proved instantly effective, but wasn't much use in the field. Working him to exhaustion had simply made him... exhausted, and no less anxious. Intensive taijutsu katas had improved his reflexes and coordination, but nothing else. Talking sort of worked; just very, very slowly.

Meditating had put him to sleep.

Today they weren't anywhere near a training field. Instead, the sun arced high and hot over the gentle grassy slope that led down to Konoha's winding river. Raidou had picked a breezy, shaded spot well away from any sensitive civilians, and sat with his shoes off, his jeans rolled up, and his feet dangling in the water. Kaito hadn't yet decided whether he should sit or just hover about nervously, trying not to look nervous. Above them, new spring leaves budded on spreading branches.

Raidou lifted his arms, stretching out his spine, and tried to decide how best to reveal his latest idea. Then he dug about in his pocket, extracted a medic-branded leather-bound pouch, and set it down in the grass by his side.

"Today we're going to get high," he said.

Honesty was a much underused tactic.
