I hate lace, but it looks pretty [Nov. 7th, 2009|11:59 pm]

Lace is a bitch. There’s a reason I like cables and hate lace — in cables, 99% of the time you have the same number of stitches and it’s relatively easy to see in what direction the pattern is going, and relatively easy to pick up dropped stitches or frog a few rows. With lace, it’s not. I’m constantly missing YOs, or adding extras, and not figuring out that I’ve done it for a few rows. Since I started developing hand problems, it’s even more frustrating because my knitting time is limited already and I hate spending the time undoing what I’ve just done.

Which is why it took me three tries to get this project started, but eventually I did. This is Ingrid Happy with it so far, even though it’s only about 4″ long at this point, I didn’t want to overwork myself since I haven’t knit in about 3 weeks. I’m using US9s instead of US7s, trying to get a larger gauge, but even so the scarf is only going to be about 5″ across, which is narrower than I’d like, but I do like the pattern. And since it is so narrow, I should have plenty of yarn leftover (hopefully enough to make a pair of fingerless gloves?)

(I know — you can’t see any stitch definition in pics taken on a camera phone. But this is NaBloPoMo and I’m too impatient to find my camera cord!)

Yuletide! [Nov. 7th, 2009|10:14 pm]

[Current Mood | busy]

I'm all signed up omg!

So, Dear Yuletide Author:

First, of course, all optional details are optional! I will love whatever you write for me! I've nothing particular to add about the fandoms I requested besides what's in my sign-up, but I'll copy that below in case you'd rather read it here. Other than that -- I like just about everything, humor and drama and angst and fluff, plottiness and crack and character analysis. I love gen, but I also like romance - m/f, m/m, f/f, and multiples - but would prefer not NC-17 unless it's integral to the story, in which case, full speed ahead. I also like crossovers, so if you want to cross one of these with a fandom that I know, go for it! (You can probably LJ-stalk me enough to figure out my major fandoms.) I .. think that should about cover it?

Requests! )

Yuletide author, you have to write one of the above, so you can stop reading here! But for posterity, here are the two fandoms I nominated but didn't have room to request (sob!), with itty-bitty baby prompts. Read more... )

Lastly, here are the fandoms I offered: help what am I thinking )

I plan to not even consider any of this until after the semester is over. WHEEE. (by the way, when did Life on Mars UK get small enough for Yuletide??)

Finally, the account of Thursday night! [Nov. 7th, 2009|08:18 pm]

[Current Music |Voltaire - Crusade]

Yes, I have more or less slept since getting home from the concert.

Anyway.

Thursday afternoon I had my MHMR appointment, Sucked as usual. I was supposed to see the doctor but they fobbed me off onto a nurse. Grr. But I got home in plenty of time to take a nap before showtime.

Hitting Frank beforehand didn't work out :( Was looking forward to it, too.

But that was not the important part! [info]doombuggie and I chattered on ride there, and I told him this would probably be the most fun I'd had since my RHPS days, and we discussed our mutual RHPS days a bit, and the possibility of investigating the current local cast, preferably with [info]rehd_fawx.

What I wore )

We were early enough to get good parking, which is always nice. We hung around a bit, and then we went up to the merch table, cuz Voltaire was there! [info]doombuggie bought a couple of CDs and had them signed, and I gave him, as I'd hoped to, the bottle ofConjure Oils La Calavera (which he sniffed and seemed to like... he also asked if I was the one who made it, which makes it two for two since Neil Gaiman asked if I wa a Labbie when I gave him a bottle of Shub... now I just need to find a goth icon to give a bottle of Arcana to) and got my copy of OH MY GOTH signed.

Moments after that was taken, I got an unexpected Voltaire-hug! Of the friendly variety, not the creepy one. It was smile-making.

Waiting time. The very loud DJ music, bright spinning flashing lights, and smoke machines were far too much for me, and I mostly huddled up with my eyes closed so I wouldn't burn out.

[info]doombuggie also greatly overestimated my ability to hold a conversation in a noisy club, which is pretty much nil.

Then we had the opening act. Oh lord! He played a keyboard with so much bass that the seat of my metal chair vibrated, which is the best that can be said of him. He had this wannabe-Nick-Cave thing going and sang as if he'd been gargling ground glass and lye, but his speaking voice was normal. He did a few 'oooooo I'm morbid' songs, and then...

"Beth" by Kiss. I thought we had reached the pinnacle, but he followed it with "Chim Chim Chiree" from Mary Poppins. Good thing I'd just hid the restroom or I might have wet myself. If this dude stuck to doing incongrous covers he could be the next Richard Cheese!

And then.

And then.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It was magic, completely magic. The man has astonishing stage presence, just a wonderful personality that shines through.

[info]doombuggie went to do a little more circulation, and during 'BRAINS' a simply adorably pink-haired girl came up to compliment my barrettes. She asked where I got them and I let her know they'd been a Walgreens Halloween item. Poor dear looked so disappointed! Now, the thing about these barrettes... I had them both on one side because the way they were made, if you wear one on each side, one would be upside down. So it was an easy snap decision to pull one out and give it to her. I mean, this was a fifty cent barrette. The gleeful expression was worth much more than that, and she kissed me, too! And it gives each of us a nice little extra memory of an already awesome concert.

As I've said, Voltaire was busily being awesome, doing a lot of his classics and a few new ones. Each one had me enthralled.

And then...

Truly Voltaire is a Messenger of Fate, for he closed with this

I yelled "FUCK THE BACK ROW!" scary loud. And I tried to do a standing ovation, and I fell down.

Stone cold sober, folks. I'm just that cool.

And that is basically how it went.

Pumpkin Soup! [Nov. 6th, 2009|11:59 pm]

[Tags|]

Not sure when this turned into a food blog, but that seems to be what I’m working on lately. And since the fabulous Juliana is requesting pumpkin recipes (and since I didn’t get around to making my chili today after all), that’s what you’ll get…

A friend passed this along to me a few years ago, so I’m not sure of the source. I also tend not to measure much, and I can say that the only time I’ve ever screwed this one up is when I added too much pumpkin and didn’t balance it out with extra spices. So really, everything is approximate and spice to taste. Also, I’m writing this from memory so forgive the lack of exact step-by-step directions.

Pumpkin Soup

4+ cups broth
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup chopped onion
1 15oz can pumpkin
1 tsp sage
1 tsp thyme
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1 chopped cooked potato (optional, to thicken)

Directions

1. Saute onion and celery for about 5 minutes in a bit of olive oil.
2. Add half the broth and spices (and potato, if you want). Simmer for 10 minutes.
3. Take off heat and puree in blender or food processor.
4. Return to heat, add the rest of the broth and stir in pumpkin.
5. Simmer for another 10-15 minutes.

I usually end up adding extra vegetables and with about 6 cups of broth by the end. It’s pretty hard to screw this one up, as long as you don’t burn the onions.

Question about England [Nov. 5th, 2009|07:38 pm]

I am working on the next couple of chapters of "Directions," and I was wondering if some lovely British fangirl could tell me -- is there a typical time that a university would be closed for the Christmas season? Or would it vary from school to school?

Thanks so much!

More adventures in destashing… the kitchen [Nov. 5th, 2009|04:43 pm]

greenwitch

While destashing of yarn is on the back burner, and destashing of my books is in progress, so begins a new destashing project: the kitchen cupboards.

Just before NaBloPoMo started I had seen a blog post made by someone somewhere wherein the author was making an inventory of her canned goods as an on-going project. While I’m not quite that organized, I got the idea that I should at least do some re-arranging since we tend to have a lot of canned goods stored in various places. I also happened to be raised by parents who are very frugal when it comes to food, saving all leftovers and… well, taking expiration dates more as suggestions (hey, it hasn’t killed any of us yet! Usually it’s perfectly fine, at worst it’s a bit mushier than usual.)

So last night I sorted through everything and put the newer cans in the pantry and kept the older stuff up front, which included some canned spinach. Eggs were also on sale this week, so when I went food shopping this morning I picked up some frozen pie crusts as well (I’ve tried making it myself before, and it’s always been inedible.)

And thus, when I got home, I made my first-ever quiche:

IMG_4614-500

Shockingly (to me, at least), it is, indeed, edible. It actually came out pretty good, even if the spinach was the icky canned kind and not fresh (or frozen, as the recipe called for), and the fact that I substituted plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise (the idea of baking with mayonnaise is pretty damn icky to me, I just couldn’t do it.)

Next up… pumpkin chili. Hopefully it’ll turn out better than last time (stupid me followed the recipe exactly, even though it involved adding half of the contents of the spice cabinet.)

I just read an addme-type post where someone said one of their hobbies was "raping [their] computer". As English is not their first language, I sincerely hope it's a misunderstanding of sorts and not a deliberate attempt to use the word rape in "edgy", "hip", "funny", or "un-pc" ways. Which I disapprove of. *

The world and the people in it are pissing me off in lots of other ways, too, but I'm too tired to even list these. Maybe I should just go back to bed.

* Eta: I've explained my issues with the usage of the word in casual contexts in this IJ comment.

Why yes, I am a bit optimistic [Nov. 4th, 2009|09:19 pm]

This be the pile of books that came into my possession today (both via the public library and by a Barnes & Noble order):

IMG00077-500

And this is in addition to the current stack (of library books and what I’m in the middle of reading, or is up next on the list):

IMG00080-500

Note that I’m not foolish enough to actually photograph my real bookshelf, which would make even my own head explode.

As a kid, I was always a good reader. I think being the sibling that wound up with the built-in bookshelf covering an entire wall in my room definitely helped there. Of course, then came college, the Internet, digital cable and Netflix, and the amount of time I spent reading dropped off of a sharp precipice. Of course, then after a few years working in the field of my college major (and realizing there was not much going on there), I made a wacky decision to go and become a librarian. Once I got a job in a public library, it became clear that my lack of pleasure reading over the past few years was going to be slightly problematic.

So for the past few months, I’ve been trying to catch up. Hence the piles of dead trees I have sitting on my coffee table and around my bed. My primary genres are historical fiction and sci-fi fantasy, though I’m a fan of non-fiction as well (especially books on natural foods, and technology). I even pre-ordered a B&N nook (though I’ve been waffling on this decision ever since, since it is very much an unnecessary purchase, and I just wanted to be an early adopter for once.) I’ve been keeping track of my progress on Goodreads, and sought out a few online book clubs on Ning (though I’m mostly using them for future recommendations, since my plate is obviously full at the moment.)

I do admit, the hardest part is just setting aside the time to actually read. I used to be a very fast reader, and that’s diminished over the years, but if I can get a good run in I can make it pretty far (thought I blasted through the Sookie Stackhouse series in just a couple hours each). Of course, now when I do try to get a few hours in before going to sleep at night, usually I look up from the page only to discover it’s 3am. Whoops.

At least I’m getting back in the habit.

Business news of note [Nov. 4th, 2009|12:28 pm]

yourlibrarian
[Tags|, , ]

I imagine many have already heard of Joss Whedon's offer to buy the Terminator franchise rights. I was reminded of it when I read this short piece about falling DVD sales, slow Blu-Ray adoption and how this impacts movie profitability. "[T}he DVD business has been the most profitable part of the film industry with many films becoming profitable only after the film is released on DVD." But falling sales are leading to price increases in DVDs. Because this article focused on movies only it didn't mention how TV series DVDs were being affected, but presumably they are also declining since the article talks about streaming video online, and that's being done with TV.

This made me think of the Terminator issue because people who are real fans tend to buy DVD sets (either that or people with small children and no cable). And Joss does seem to make shows that sell DVDs out of proportion to their original ratings. It's a pity he won't get the rights, I'm sure he could do something interesting with it.

On a different note, SPARC has put out a report on different income models for open-access publishers that reviews current practices being employed. Seems a good time to consider this. An open-access journal that I was a peer reviewer for has closed down after ten years of publishing and three sponsorship moves. I suspect it won't be alone.

Rebel's fic [Nov. 4th, 2009|08:22 am]

I think I might try to channel one of Rebel's angelically-transmitted fics, but although I have vast experience acting as typist for fics psychically communicated by dogs, I have yet to post one communicated posthumously.

Should I post them under his [info]hounded  name in his journal? It feels... weird. Which given the context of the question might be a given, but.... what do you think, oh my darling readers?

Already hitting the speed bumps [Nov. 3rd, 2009|10:34 pm]

greenwitch

Only Day #3 of NaBloPoMo and I’m already hitting the speed bumps. I should probably work on some template posts to keep in store just in case, but no time for that today.

I think I’ve found my next project, however, to make using the green yarn I bought from Light Brown Hare back in the spring, and that is Ingrid from Oceanwind Knits. I’ve been trying to figure out a decent pattern that will show off the colors, but never found something that I was really happy with. This one is sufficiently different from any other patterns I’ve used before, though, so at least it feels like something new, even though it’s still a scarf.

Now I just hope that my ball winder can handle this ginormous skein of yarn D: LOL.
