Rena doubted that Thomas would be entirely careful, though she didn't say as much, because she imagined Thomas would think he was being careful even when he wasn't. Emotions did strange things with the thought process, something Rena often had to deal with after a fit of anger, when she'd wonder what she had been thinking when she had done something, or even if she had been thinking at all. She was grateful that despite her many mishaps, Thomas had been patient with her. After all, he didn't dismiss her for things such as waving a spoon in his face or slamming a tray of food down beside his head when he was sleeping. She supposed she could be patient, too.
When Thomas pulled his hand away from Rena's she had to consciously push the doubt away. It was true that her dedication to the pub had always been appreciated and her missteps overlooked, she reminded herself, though more than anything, she was frustrated with the swell of unease she felt.
"Will she be coming here?" Rena asked, hoping to conceal the uncertainty behind that simple question.
