Setting: At Reaver's Run in Greenville, near where Cold Creek begins.
Rating: Tba, though I imagine nothing more than PG-13.
Cai was sick. The town physician has just fallen ill with the Gray Death and Bess needs some time to think..and, to swim.
Status: Incomplete.
Cai was sick.
Even though she had only known the man for not yet a month, the news shocked her. He was the most capable healer she had ever met, and the town depended on his skills. But he was certainly in no condition to be treating his patients this morning, not when she had found him half-delirious in a fever. She had done the best she could to make him comfortable, crushing herbs into tea to help alleviate the pain. The sickness was settling down upon him quicker than others - Already he could hardly rise from his bed, though she was more than relieved to note that his features had not yet darkened into gray. Either way, he was ill with the same ailment that sickened many other folk - The Gray Death.
Cai had instructed her to take his place for the time being with the little strength he had, and quite frankly, Bess was frightened. There was still so much she needed to learn about this sickness, so much that she didn't know. She didn't know if the townspeople were ready to trust her skills, and had little idea of how they would react to the news of Cai's state of health. He was elderly and had surely known these folk all their lives, and now he was in danger of being taken from them. And now she was to be in charge in his place? Bess didn't know where to begin. Perhaps she should go see Tristan..No, he would fret so. She would not place that weight on his shoulders, not yet.
So Bess had made her usual rounds without Cai, checking up on infants and the elderly folk. She had told the patients who inquired of the physician's whereabouts that Cai was out of town for the day, feeling such guilt for the lies she told. No sleep would come for her tonight, of that much she was certain. These thoughts were most likely why Bess looked incredibly distracted as she left her last patient's house, face drawn and eyes more sullen and serious than usual. And so she followed the road until she reached Reaver's Run, slipping off her boots and wading a little in the water. The river reminded her of home, of her father, of childhood. She stared across to the Spirit Wood and waded up to her shins, knowing that all of this was quite unladylike of her.
The cool water was certainly tempting and Bess tugged off her outer layers, leaving a simple tunic and her breeches (that she had borrowed from her husband for practicality of making work easier). Bess wasn't thinking of the ill physician, nor of the husband she tried to care for as a lover as she slipped beneath the surface - No, she was thinking about how relaxing this was, though even she had to bite back a yelp at the chill of the water. She sputtered as she came up for air, wet clothes clinging uncomfortably to her skin. Even so, Bess was thinking of how she could spend forever here. At least, until she sensed that she wasn't alone. Bess scanned the shore and felt her cheeks color just slightly, hearing a twig break. "Hello?" She called out, treading the water as she did so. "Who's there?"
