Emi had been in Greenville for three years, and in that time she'd delivered three of Mrs Markeley's children- her fourth, fifth, and sixth (twins). The Markeleys were farmers- they lived west of Greenville proper on a decent expanse of land, land that was now hard and cold, waiting for the spring's planting. Mrs Markeley, however, was once again expecting a child- one who, judging by her size, would be born long before that planting season arrived. Still, even if she was (quite obviously) an experienced mother, Mrs Markeley seemed to take comfort in Emi's weekly visits, and the two often ended up chatting for some time afterward.
It was after one such visit that Emi was walking back toward town- she had never been a fan of horses, and the walk didn't bother her. Even in her human form, her senses were a bit more elevated than those of a true human- it wasn't anything that Emi really hinted at, usually, but when she heard the familiar sounds of a large creature nearby, she had to pause and listen.
Emi heard- and felt- the blast from the fire. There was only one creature she knew that could do that, purposefully or not. Alarmed- though she couldn't have explained way- Emi hiked up her skirts and started running toward the scene.
