Rena was humming softly to herself as she worked, unable but help but get into the spirit of the season as she stood on a chair and draped sweet-smelling pine boughs over the mantle of the hearth in the common room at the pub. Despite the tension at the pub, Rena couldn't help but get into the spirit of the season and each year since her arrival, she had insisted on helping decorate the pub until it became veritable wonderland of green and red with garlands and bows. She saved up candles to make everything glow warmly, making the pub inviting to all to celebrate the merry time of year.
It was one of the few traditions that Rena missed from her childhood and thus, she had insisted on being part of it each and every year at the pub. While the pub couldn't match Somerset Manor for grandeur, it certainly outdid it in warmth and coziness, something that more than made up for it. And each year, Thomas would bring in a beautiful pine tree to grace the common area of the pub, the largest that would fit, and Bridget would decorate it. Rena loved to help with the tree, helping the younger girl string berries and popped kernels of corn with a needle to hang on the tree and tie brightly colored bows to the branches. Of course, she hadn't volunteered for the task this year, given the fact that Abby might want to share that particular tradition with her daughter now that she had the opportunity, though she had begun to collect materials all the same, just in case.
Still, it was hard to be gloomy with the fire crackling and the scent of fresh-cut pine filling the room. Outside, the fading afternoon sun glinted off the thin layer of snow that had fallen earlier that day. It was slow at the pub, it being the lull between lunch and dinner and Rena was able to focus all of her attention on the task at hand. It truly was beginning to feel like Yule was on its way.
