Who: Penny and Matt
Where: the Magic Shop
When: around noontime
What: a long overdue visit
It had been so long since she had visited her friend Matt that Penny was worried about what he might say when she visited him. Would he be upset with her? Or perhaps he thought her unreliable or flighty? It was difficult to imagine what he would have thought about her significant absence but Penny was had found the resolve to go visit him once more. She took the time to carefully choose two new books for him, books she had read when she was stuck in bed with her illness. She had decided to use that time wisely, having servants bring her book after book so that she could find the perfect ones to give to Matt to read. She was confident in her picks, one of which had kept her up until her candle had burned down to nub in suspense at what would become of the adventurous protagonist.
The day had dawned sunny and crisp, a perfect day for a ride through the forest into town. She was glad that her father was out of town to work and her mother was occupied preparing for some social event or other and it was easy enough to get out to the barn to take Copper out. It was becoming far too simple to slip out of the house, she though uneasily, but she did her best to push her doubts aside.
So she set out into the forest, Lucky trotting at Copper's heels and Penny wouldn't have it any other way. The trees were all but bare now and the forest was bright with the pale autumn sunlight and the leaves crunched under Copper's hooves as they traveled at a comfortable canter. Penny was careful to slow down as they approached town, mindful of her previous experience nearly running over a princess in her haste.
Despite her apprehension, Penny found herself smiling as she guided Copper toward the Magic Shop, eager to share her latest picks with Matt. "Stay," she told Lucky as she tethered Copper, taking out the books and holding them to her chest as she walked toward the shop.
Penny paused at the door, reminding herself that Matt would not be upset with her and that he would certainly love the books she had chosen for him. Taking a breath, Penny walked into the shop, hoping that Matt would be there.
