Who: Matt and Penny
Where: the Magic Shop
When: afternoon
What: Penny visits with books
Rating: Low, this is Penny we're talking about here!
Status: Threaded, incomplete.

It was a beautiful day for a ride, the air crisp with the coming of autumn and the skies clear and blue. Penny breathed the air in deeply as she guided her mare out of the forest and into the town. Despite the beautiful weather, Penny's ride wasn't solely for the enjoyment of the clear day, even if it had made a perfect excuse for an excursion. Penny was taking one of her increasingly frequent trips to town to lend books to one of her friends.

When Matt had taken an interest in the Brisbois library, Penny had been only too happy to share. After all, the library was rarely used by anyone but herself and it had seemed a terrible waste. She quickly found she enjoyed the game of it and she would take her time carefully selecting books, hoping to find one her friend would love. What made it even better was that when she went to pick up the books and deliver new ones, he often had interesting things to say about what he had read or the goings on in town. She found herself looking forward to seeing him and learning of his reactions to her selections.

Thus, as she rode into town, there were two new books in Penny's saddlebags. She was certain Matt would enjoy them as they seemed the sort he would like and she had even read through them herself so that they could compare their thoughts, which was an exciting prospect as Penny had rarely discussed books with anyone other than her tutor. With any luck, the shop wouldn't be too busy that afternoon and they would get a chance to talk.

Penny quickly dismounted as she arrived at the shop, hitching Copper before taking out the books and clutching them to herself as she walked into the shop, her gaze hopefully seeing her friend.

It had been a quiet couple of weeks; Matthias had been keeping himself busy between working at the shop and helping Julius out with the construction on their house and barn. He'd also seen Penny a few times- he found that he really enjoyed her visits and rather liked her company. Other than that, life had been fairly quiet. He'd been taking on more responsibilities in the shop, as Mr Thane had been concerning himself more with his ill brother as of late. Matt couldn't help but be glad that Mr Thane trusted him so much.

He was in the back room when he heard the door to the shop open. "I'll be right out!" he called out as he found the box he was looking for, brightening with a grin. There were a few boxes in there that had been set aside for a customer a few days earlier, and they had told him that they'd be by to pick it up some time that afternoon. Stepping back out to the front, he couldn't help but brighten just a little more when he realized who his visitor was. "Good afternoon, Miss Bribois!"

Penny smiled when she heard the familiar voice calling to her from the back room of the shop, moving toward the counter and setting the books down on it. She leaned her arms atop the books, leaning on them as she patiently waited for Matthias to emerge. She didn't mind waiting, not in a shop where there were always so many interesting things to see. As usual, her eyes wandered, taking in the curios on display in that most unusual shop. Even after several visits, she never ceased to be amazed, though she hadn't bought anything since that first time.

When Matt emerged, Penny's smiled widened to match his own. How could she help it, with him smiling so broadly at her as though he were truly delighted to see her? "Please, you needn't bother with such formalities," she insisted with a giggle. "I'm not here on business, after all."

"If you insist," Matt replied, setting the box down on the counter and pushing it to the side- it could wait for later. He had a visitor, after all! "You're certainly a pleasant surprise!" He had known that she was visiting soon, but hadn't been entirely certain of the day, since she didn't seem to have a set schedule of her visits. "How are you doing this afternoon?"

"Well, I'm glad I could provide a pleasant diversion," Penny replied with a laugh. "Though, I do hope I'm not taking you away from something important. Mister Thane doesn't mind my visiting, does he?" Penny's brow furrowed as she grew fretful once more, as she was so apt to do. After all, she didn't want Matt to get into trouble on her account even if she did enjoy the visits.

Matt's question after her well being was enough to distract her momentarily from her fretting. "Oh, I am very well, thank you. It's a perfect day - the sky is so blue and clear that it seems to go on forever and there's just a hint of autumn in the air. The ride was lovely on account of that. And you? How are you today?" she inquired, her tone taking on some of it's usual politeness at the question, though she was genuinely interested. She had opted not to complain of the awkwardness at home, both on account of the fact that she didn't want to distress Matt, who was friends with Julius, and because she was enjoying the time away from the lonely, uncomfortable silence that had settled into the hole that Gen had left in their family.

"You always do," Matt said with a grin, and then, remembering his manners, he took one of the stools from behind the counter and brought it out so she could take a seat if she wanted to. "You aren't at all, I promise. It was busy this morning, but everything's been pretty quiet this afternoon. And Mister Thane doesn't mind at all- though he might not know you're visiting at the moment, to be honest. He's been helping with his ill brother, and has been leaving the shop to my care more often, lately."

He moved over to his own stool and took a seat, tilting his head as he listened to her speak. "I'm glad to hear that. It does look like it's been a lovely day- I wish I could spend more time outside, but somebody has to man the shop, after all. And I'm doing well. I've been keeping myself busy here, mostly. Nothing terribly interesting."

Penny blushed slightly as Matt indicated that her presence was always welcome. "I am glad," she replied, murmuring a polite thanks as she took the seat offered to her. "And I am glad I have come at a convenient time, though I'm truly sorry about Mister Thane's brother. Please give him my best wishes when you next see him." Her concern for the man was genuine, though she only knew the man in passing, but it was her way to worry over everyone and everything. After all, she was too tender-hearted to even let a weak puppy die.

"Perhaps the good weather will hold so that you can enjoy it," Penny offered hopefully. "Though it is good you've been keeping busy. Though if you've found the time to finish the last books you've borrowed, I brought a couple more!" It was difficult for Penny to conceal her excitement as she unveiled the two latest picks that she had so painstakingly selected for her friend.

"You're welcome," he said softly in return. "I'll pass on your regards the next time I see Mister Thane. I'm sure he'll appreciate them. Miss Forrester's been kind enough to send along some teas and food, which seem to be doing much to improve his spirits, but his brother has always had a weak constitution, so he can't help but worry." Matt didn't mean to sound as though he were merely gossiping, though it may have come across that way. He just wanted to share what had been happening with his friend.

"And I did finish them!" Leaning over, he picked up his bag from the hook under the table and reached inside to pull out the books she'd brought him on her last visit. "They were really great, thank you." He grinned, stacking the two carefully and passing them back to her. "What have you brought me today?"

"Oh, that is sweet of Gabby! She's quite thoughtful, is she not? I wish I had something to send along. You don't suppose he would enjoy a book or two, do you?" Penny replied thoughtfully, knowing that she had very little that she could legitimately give away. Even food if it were taken in any quantity might be questioned and she had little noguh spending money, mostly remainders of money given when merchants passed through that she might buy something pretty for herself. Most of her needs had always been taken care of by others, without any need for her to take care of herself. "I do hope he improves. Haven't you got anything in this shop that will help?" Again, Penny's eyes wandered the shelves, imagining that surely magic could help but realizing that if it did, there would be no sickness.

Still, Penny's thoughts were easily diverted to the much happier subject of the books. A thrill coursed through her when Matt proclaimed that he had enjoyed them, meaning that she had made good selections. "I am so glad!" she replied happily. "I did so hope that you would - particularly that adventure story. Was it not quite thrilling? I could hardly put it down though my candle was practically gutted and it was long past time that I be asleep! I'm afraid it frightened me a bit but it was worth it in the end!"

"Yes, she's very nice," Matt agreed with a nod. "And I think he would. I know Mister Thane keeps a collection up there, but he seems to go through books fairly quickly." He offered a smile, then glanced up as she looked over the shelves in the shop. "No, we don't have a lot by means of medicine. I know Mister Thane has been looking for years for something to make his brother stronger, but I don't think he's had very much luck."

He brightened a little with her smile, and he nodded more enthusiastically. "It was great! I went through that one fairly quickly- I couldn't put it down! It didn't frighten me, but I did want to see what would happen to Alexander in the end!"

"Oh, I will have to look through my collection and see if there is anything he might enjoy. What sort of thing do you think he'd like?" Penny inquired, thinking back to her own personal book collection. Most of her books were stories of the romantic variety but she had some other things, she was sure, and surely there was something that would appeal to him. "I hope that he finds something to help his brother. I am sure so many people would benefit from something like that."

Penny was pleased with Matt's enthusiasm, scooting to the edge of the stool with excitement as he spoke. "Oh, I know! But it was so worthwhile - the ending was such a surprise!" she exclaimed happily, clasping her hands together. "I am so pleased you enjoyed it! I hope you will enjoy these as much, I picked them out quite carefully, you'll have to let me know what you think!"

"I think he'd like the adventure stories. Nothing too scary or unnerving. And I know he likes learning about history as well." Matt tilted his head slightly as he considered. "I hope so, too. But it isn't the Grey Death, so at least that's a little bit of a comfort. He still isn't sure of what it is, though."

"I'll be sure to!" he exclaimed, eying the books she'd brought. "At least, you've done well in picking books for me before now- I don't see why I wouldn't enjoy what you bring me this time!"

Penny nodded, taking note of the reply. "I will see what I can do," she promised. "I'll bring it as soon as I am able. Sometimes it's hard to get away but I will do my best! And these are sorry times that we look upon a man who is ill and be thankful that it isn't the Grey Death. I hope they can find a cure for it soon." Penny was grateful that she hadn't known anyone who had died of it but it terrified her all the same.

Penny shook her head, trying not to focus on those upsetting thoughts. "I'm so glad you think so," Penny replied, the blush creeping back into her cheeks. "I enjoy picking them out so much!"

"We all hope they find something. I still haven't heard any word about the status of the knights who have gone in search of a cure, but I know we're all waiting anxiously for some sign of their reappearance." He had spoke to Gabby, of course, and heard about her brother- he couldn't help but worry for her as well.

"I'm glad you do. I wouldn't want to ask you to do it if you don't enjoy it!" He offered a smile. "Oh- also! Greenville is having its annual Autumn festival next week- I was wondering if you might want to try to make it out here for it? I'd be more than happy to escort you, if you'd like."
