Word Count: 401
The sun is just beginning to burn the night away and the air is cold, still Faith sits on the hood of the Impala with a beer loosely grasped in her hand. From the distant highway, she can hear sounds of the commuter traffic as people drive about in their cars away from their warm beds and towards their jobs. As much as she hates being a Slayer, Faith thinks she has it better than those people who are like little rats in a cage on that wheel that goes around and around and around but never gets anywhere.
She closes her eyes and enjoys the feel of the first rays of sunlight on her face. Her body is covered in bruises and it hurts to move but she still tilts her head up to feel more of the sunlight on her face. Dean moves to sit on the Impala beside her and she sighs in delight when he drapes his warm leather jacket around her shoulders and wraps his arm around her waist. If it was any other time but this morning, she’d protest when he takes her beer from her and takes a long swallow, however on this morning she’s fascinated by the way that the sunlight moves against his skin as the muscles in his throat work as he swallows.
“How are you feeling?” Dean quietly asks.
“Glad to be alive.”
He nods in response. The hunt that had taken them to this abandoned farmhouse had been a hard one, much harder than either of them had expected it to be. Instead of being a simple salt and burn of one ghost, they’d found five ghosts with their bodies buried in different spots on the farm. It hadn’t been easy and Faith’s pretty sure that it wasn’t for the fact that she was a Slayer; they might both be dead right now. She shivers at the thought and Dean pulls her closer against him. He won’t give her sweet words but he’ll use his body to comfort her, to reassure her.
For now, she’s content to sit on the roof of the Impala, with Dean’s comforting warmth pressed into her as she watches the sun rise and illuminate the world. Later on, she’ll tend to her wounds and bruises and wonder if maybe she should get back into slaying vampires and leave these ghost hunts to the professionals.
