Who: Mary Winchester and Belle
What: Mary and Belle stumble upon each other.
Where: Back kitchen car
When: Monday evening, around the dinner hour
Ratings: None.
Status: Closed, ongoing.

Mary was adjusting to the train. It was still a very strange place to her but she was adjusting. She had met her eldest son, Dean, just after her arrival and she had been told that her youngest, Sam, was also on the train but she had yet to see him. As much as Mary was beyond overjoyed to see her sons, she was also sad. Seeing Dean all grown up, it really sunk into her at that moment that she had missed so much of her son's lives. Although she didn't let onto Dean, she remembered her death clearly, her last memories was John ordering Dean to take Sammy outside. It was a memory that she intended to keep to herself.

Deciding that she was hungry, Mary left her room and she went to the kitchen car, wondering it slowly as she looked at the selection of food and deciding what she felt like eating for dinner. There was always a large choice and Mary always had a hard time narrowing it down. Finally, after careful consideration, she picked up a plate and started dishing some salad out, deciding that she was going to go for the chicken for dinner tonight.

It was true that many things happening on the train were far from routine for Belle right now. People showing up from the other world Rum lived in, finding out things about him that further drowned out the glimmer of goodness that only she could see, suddenly having magic she didn't truly want and couldn't properly control.

But there were some things that remained unchanged. Like the fact that it was still very easy for her to lose herself so completely in a book that she forgot to eat. And when she did, she often couldn't be bothered to put her book down to go about doing it. Which was why she was wandering into the kitchen now, feet leading her with a memory of their own as she kept her nose stuck between the pages of a paperback. She was heading to the fridge without thought, intending to grab something she could eat with one hand, when she quite nearly bumped into another person. Thankfully, she noticed them--barely--and managed to step herself aside just in time.

"Oh," she half-stammered, setting the hand holding her book to her side and smiling somewhat bashfully. "Pardon me."

Mary managed to barely avoid the collision by stepping in the opposite direction of Belle. Mary smiled at the young woman. "Do not worry about it. I wasn't paying attention to where I was going either." She laughed.

"I take it that is a good book?" Mary asked, glancing at the paperback in Belle's hands. "I am new on the train. Is there a library here? It'd help pass some time if I had something to read."

Putting her plate on the counter, Mary held her hand out in a way of greeting. "I'm Mary. Mary Winchester."

Belle laughed quietly, "It is. I'm afraid I get a bit lost in stories." A bit? she could almost hear Rum--the imp in her mind--gently mocking her. The mere idea of his voice, after what had happened yesterday-both the fight and the kiss, in this very car--made her flush a little. She pushed that thought away, beaming up at Mary,

"I'm Belle. Very pleased to meet you, Mary. I've been here--two months? Close to that," she shrugged, leaning against the counter. "We didn't have the library when I first got here, though. It is a vast improvement, I must say, particularly when we're going though less exciting places like this one." She paused for a moment, "Well, I suppose that's relative. Perhaps you're from a realm where cows are very exciting?" she said, laughter touching her voice.

"Belle, what a pretty name." Mary said with a smile before laughing. "Although I find cows to be cute, they are not all that interesting." Mary thought back to when Dean was four and Mary was in her later months of her pregnancy with Sam. John and Mary had taken Dean to a farm and she had a blast watching her son touch and watch the animals. Mary sighed softly, the memories were bittersweet. She held those memories close to her heart but it was a reminder that she had missed out on her children's life.

"I will have to make my way to the library car. What kind of books do you like to read? Do you have any recommendations?"

Belle grinned, "Why, thank you. I certainly could have done much worse, going by what some of my cousins got stuck with."

She bit back a sigh, herself, as she thought of the family she'd never see again--regardless of the train. Her eyes brightened though at being able to talk about books. Outside of Rum, they were more or less her life.

"I read near about everything," she said, looking nearly bashful until she remembered being bookish wasn't quite so strange in this realm. "Back home I mostly read stories of knights and dragons, adventure stories because I'd never have one of my own." She tipped her head back with a smile, "I suppose this counts as one, though. I've been reading a lot of history books here. All of the people talk about places so different from home, I want to learn everything I can about--" she almost laughed. "Everything. The library's all sorts of things like that, and poetry and novels. It's not quite as expansive as the last one I had access to," her eyes got a little misty at the thought of the Dark Castle, "but it does nicely."

She waved the book in her hand. "This one, though. This one's about a man who falls in love with a star. A star he'd been intending to take as a gift for another," she smirked. "I don't like my love stories easy, you see. Love at first sight, women getting just swept off their feet into some vague happily ever after..." she shook her head. "Not for me. I like there to be--fighting for love. And with love, in a lot of cases."

Mary smiled as Belle spoke. The woman's passion for books seemed to radiate off of her and Mary suddenly had a desire to go raid the library. "That sounds like a lovely story but I agree with you. Love is worth fighting for." She smiled, as she briefly thought of her husband John.

"I will admit that I haven't had much time to read. Back home, my sons occupied most of my time. They were just four and 6 months old. They're both here on the train but they've both grown up. But I seem to have a lot of time on my hands being here so I'll have to be sure to go to the library car and check out some books." Mary reached out and grabbed for a roll. "Have you been on the train very long?"

Belle's brow knitted slightly. "Oh my. Most people are very confused when they arrive, but that must have been..." she shook her head, unable to comprehend it. "But at least you're together. I...well, I likely would have been separated from my family, with or without the train." She tried not to think, too much, on what Rum had told her about his son. She was trying not to think of him at all at the moment--and not succeeding much.

She shrugged. "Longer than some stay," she perched on the counter. "Some people have been here a great deal longer, I've heard closer to a year. I wouldn't mind staying, even with the strange things it likes to do," Her mouth twitched, "I suppose you'd like to get back to where your sons were children, though."

"It was a little confusing, I will admit it. To have my sons be children and turn around and they are adults, it was very strange. But I'm happy to know both of my sons grew into wonderful adults." Mary smiled. She knew she was babbling about her sons. She was just so proud of them.

"I've noticed there's been a lot of arrivals and departures and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind it." Mary frowned slightly at Belle's question.

"I actually wouldn't mind staying here on the train so long as Sam and Dean are here. At least it allows me to be with my sons. Back home.....I....I died. I never got to see my children grow up."

Belle felt a smile cross her face as Mary began to talk, albeit a sad one. She'd never tell Rum, but the one regret she had in choosing him was that she'd never be a mother.

Her mouth dropped at Mary's last words, however, and her eyes grew wide. "Oh. Oh I--I'm so sorry," she leaned forward a little, swallowing down the knot that tried to find its way into her throat.

"That...must be very difficult for all of you. I...can't imagine any length of time would enough," she bit her lip, thoughtfully. "...there are some people, apparently," she started, hesitantly, because she wasn't sure how this suggestion might go over, "who've gotten off at a stop. Stayed there, because home wasn't..." she waved vaguely.

"I've thought about it myself, but..." she couldn't. Not without Rum, and he couldn't because he needed to find his child.

"It is very difficult but I died trying to protect them. But it's in the past. What matters the most is that I'm here and so are my sons. I can at least spend time with them here on the train."

Mary tilted her head slightly at Belle's suggestion. Could she and her sons get off at a stop and not return back to the train? There was definitely a lot to think about with that statement and Mary would have to put a lot of thought into it. If the train was content to leave all three of them on the train together, there wasn't an issue for Mary. However, if the train was going to send just one of them home, she'd have to consider Belle's suggestion.

"It's an interesting idea and one that I will have to consider. I just want my sons to be safe and I want what's best for them. Who knows, maybe there's a specific reason that the train has brought us here."

"That's...very brave," Belle said, softly. She told herself constantly that she would die for those she loved, but she would admit to the thought of actually doing so being terrifying.

"I've wondered the same thing myself, actually," she said, with a little shrug. "...the man I love thinks I'm dead, back home, but here...." she managed a slight smirk. Despite still being mad at him, and feeling horrible about the incident in the kitchen, she was still so very glad Rum is here. "I'm just not sure I like the idea of waiting around here in case I do have a purpose, and not taking my chance to change things by staying off. The train's already meddled in my affairs enough, I'm not sure I like the idea of it controlling my fate that much."

Mary smiled sadly at Belle's comment that she was brave. "I don't know about brave. I was pretty terrified. But I did what any mother would do for her children. I'd do it again if I had to."

"While I'm enjoying having the opportunity to be with my sons, I don't like the idea that they are here. I still don't trust this train and I don't want anything to happen to Dean or Sam. I want them safe. I'm not in a rush to leave the train so long as they are here, I am afraid to know what my purpose here is." She had not voiced this concern to anyone but she was afraid that she was brought here for the sole reason of messing with her sons. She had died when they were both very young. Her coming back to life and having her two grown sons on the train knowing that they could be sent back at any given time....well it would be heartbreaking.
