Characters: Mitchell and Maryanne
When: Sunday morning
Location: Dining Room
Warnings/Rating: low/medium
Summary: Mitchell is still confused and Maryanne has her fun aka Mitchell meets a friend he doesn’t remember
Status: unfinished

It got less disturbing after you looked at it long enough. Grey, white and black seemed to get normal. And then you looked back. At the train, the coffee mug in your hand and everything was surreal once again. For Mitchell nothing made sense anymore. The nightmare had stayed. Nothing bad had happened. He couldn’t complain. But it was still wrong. Everything was wrong. There was still the voice that said that this couldn't be real. Yet, Annie had made him coffee. Somehow he thought that his presence unnerved her. Was it just because she remembered and he didn’t? Or was there something more? He wasn’t sure but was too afraid to ask. So he kept his distance and rather sat here on his own. His eyes wandered over the other people in car. Who else knew him? What did they know about him what he didn’t? Seconds, minutes, hours, days were missing. More than days.

Mitchell sipped at his coffee while his thoughts strayed to everything he could have done and every person he could have been.

Here she'd always thought he was younger, some how. Without adding his vampire years of course. "Yeah about that, or maybe twenty-six and a half?" She added with a tiny bit of teasing to her tone. "But you know age is only a number."

He nodded, having gained another piece of the puzzle that was his past. The teasing earned a frown. "Err... maybe?" He didn't quite understand what she meant with it. "Do you know how Annie and I met?" He deliberately did not tell her that his betrothed did not want to talk about it. But maybe he could understand her reluctance if he knew.

"Quite possibly." Well what she meant by it was that she didn't know him from his world, but she also wasn't sure if he knew this was a time traveling reality hopping train. There was little point in freaking her friend out though. "Well, I believe you, Annie and George were roommates, but I can't say that I know how y'all met exactly." And she could only guess that Annie hadn't told him about her being a ghost.

"Oh," Mitchell said. Well, it had been worth a try. "And how did we meet?" He decided to change the focus, to here and away from Bristol, hoping he would get more lucky. There were so many loose ends missing, all the questions that wanted to be answered. It didn't really matter where he started.

"Oh, now that's not something I'd forget any time soon." Maryanne teased a little, with a bit of a wink. "The train was feeling a bit frisky on one of the stops and booted everybody off. Just so happens you and I ran into each other in our sleepwear. Which was a little less than what I've got on now." She glanced down at herself. And it had been a good deal tighter too, but there was no need to add that bit. "And we just hit it off, right from there." Oddly enough.

"Less?" he asked and couldn't quite keep the shock out of his voice. Jesus Christ! "Umm... what did Annie say?" It surely couldn't have gone down well with his fiancée.

"I..." Maryanne pursed her lips a little. "Well, I don't think it's ever come up, but it wasn't as if it was a choice. And I was covered. So were you. And it wasn't like we were playin' look see or nothin'" No they had just stood there talking. As if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Being the touchy feely sort Maryanne leaned forward and patted his arm a bit. "You and I have never had that sort of relationship. Just a light friendly, sometimes flirty, sort." He'd always been with Annie, and by the time they had met she'd already had a taste for Daryl.

Mitchell sighed in relief. "That's good." He nodded to slightly as if to underline his words. "Err... what else do you know about me?" Maybe this was the easier was to get information.

Maryanne took a long swallow from her drink as she pondered that question. Her eyes narrowing just a little. "Well, I know you're from Ireland, but I can tell that from the accent rather than you tellin' me though."

She paused a moment to nibble on her breakfast. "I know you're a very nice fella, that carries a heavy burden. But you and I hardly spend a moment without grins in each other's company." She added with a bit of fondness in her tone. She knew she wouldn't trade him for the world. And would defend him against it if she could. "And I recently taught you how to fish, with your hands."

Mitchell laughed shortly. "Aww, I forgot how to fish? What a shame!" He smiled softly, then his smile began to falter, turning to more worrisome part. "What heavy burder do I carry?" It couldn't be just the war, could it? Every soldier carried the war with him. It wasn't something that would go away easily.

Maryanne winked at him. "I'm sure it'll come back to ya." She teased lightly.

That would be the hard part, wouldn't it? "Well... I'm sure you can imagine there's a lot of death and killin' that comes with bein' a soldier in a war. And win or lose, that sort of burden stays with a man." And she wasn't just talking about the war he'd been in, but the one of a more metaphysical nature.

"It would be a loss," he said, smiling softly.

"So, it's just the war?" he asked, hoping to found out if it had anything to do with what Annie did not want to talk about. It worried him to no end. But it also made him angry. Yes, she had gotten emotional but did he not have a right to know? It was his life as well. What if his memories did not come back that easily?

"Well if worse comes to worse, I can always teach you again, if we come across another body of water, fat with fish." She'd hoped it had been just as fun on his part as it had been on hers. Especially that look of triumph when he caught the first one.

Maryanne nodded slightly. "What do you know of the train? I mean..." She made a bit of a noise not sure how to draw that forward. Had he been told it was a time traveling train?

"Yeah, I would like that," he said. It had more to do with doing something normal than actually learning how to fish. Something normal with someone who was his friend.

"Logan said that it travelled through time and different realities," he answered, his scepticisim about that was clear in his voice. It crumbled every time he looked out of the window though.

Her features brightened with a true smile, "I would too. It was a lot of fun the first time." Maryanne hadn't realized how much she missed being close to someone, until she met Mitchell. And hadn't realized how fun an uncomplicated friendship could be.

"Well, as crazy as it sounds. He wasn't lyin' to ya. You and me are from to very different places." Even if somethings were the same. Like the wars and their outcomes. "And I'm not just talkin' about the very different accents either."

He nodded. He could imagine that it had been. Still, he couldn't remember. It still terrified him. So many things that had happened to him, that he had done and he didn't know. It wasn't right.

"Yeah?" he asked, not quite knowing why she told him. What had it to do with his past?

"Yep, where I come from... People are very... different." Just how different was hard to say. She could show him how different she was, but she was sure other people couldn't.

Though she was sure it wasn't something she'd want to show him at the breakfast table. Though, it hadn't been anything she'd ever shown Mitchell.

"Why are you telling me this? What has it got to do with my past?" The confusion in his voice was very evident now. So the people from her world had different habits, maybe they weren't even religious or didn't celebrate their birthdays...

"Because I can only tell you so much about your past. I didn't know you, where you come from. Only what you've told me. So I can only answer some of your questions. Not all." And she wasn't even doing a good job with that. Because she wasn't about to tell him he was a vampire. She wasn't sure how he would take something like that. Or that Annie was really a ghost, George and Nina were werewolves...

"Besides, most of what matters to me is who you are on this train. And with me. If your a complete dick to someone else, then... I'm sure you have your reasons." Maryanne confessed. "I'm on team Mitchell all the way." And she meant it, no matter how silly it sounded.

"Uumm, thank you, I guess," he said, confusion growing even more. Why should he be a complete dick to someone else? Was it just a saying? Or had it anything to do with him? Jesus, everything was complicated when you didn't know who you really were. But someone being there for him, well, it meant something and the way she had said it sounded heart felt. "I would like to say the same about you but... well, I don't quite know?" He smiled apologentically.

Maryanne grinned slightly. "Well, I'd like to think as long as I was good to yours you'd be good to mine." In fact she almost knew he would be. And while she didn't quite care if he had her back, specifically, she did like to know he had Daryl's and the kids covered should they ever need it.

"If it helps. You're one of the people I trust most on this train. I know you'd never hurt me." Not emotionally or mentally. Physically she could handle.

"I probably am, well, I would be right now," he answered. Jesus, this was difficult. Sometimes he felt like talking about a different man and in a way he was. This whole life was strange to him. But it was his or would be his, no, it already was.

Her next words rendered him speechless for a moment. "I..." He blinked. "Thank you."

"This has to be the weirdest thing to ever happen to you, ain't it?" Second to becoming a vampire, but he probably didn't know that part. Not yet. And she wasn't going to be the one to break it to him.

She finished off the toaster pastry and sipped her drink. Giving her hands something to do more than she was actually hungry. "One thing you can answer for me, I guess, have you always gone by Mitchell, or have you gone by John before?"

Mitchell laughed. "Very true and it would still be an understatement." He couldn't imagine another possible situation that came even remotely close to this one.

The next question surprised him. So much that he was actually quiet for a second. "Err... John back in Ireland, Mitchell in the army." Most soldiers called each other by their surnames. He had gotten so used to it by now that being called John was actually strange.

Maryanne couldn't help but be pleased with herself. She did like making him laugh, it was such a... delightful sound. And she'd made him do it twice since sitting down. "Sometimes I wish I could make up words for the scale of the things this train does. And while I can, I don't want to come off any more crazy than I already do." She offered, hoping for another bit of laughter.

She smiled briefly. "I had never thought to ask before. I should have. And once you get your memory back I fully intend on asking you more about yourself." He was the sturdiest person she knew. The average bear couldn't kill him. And whether he knew it or not, it said a lot when she said she trusted him.

A soft chuckle was what she earned for her comment. "Hmm, currently I feel I can..." He searched for the right word and when he didn't find one, he made one up. "... outcrazy anyone of this train."

"Jesus! Why does that sound like a thread?" he asked, smiling. Her interest in him was a compliment really. You didn't want to get to know a person you didn't care about.

Maryanne snorted mid sip as he made up his own word, as soda went up her nose. She clapped her free hand over her nose and mouth as she sputtered. "Here I thought I learned my lesson about drinking stuff around you." She admitted between coughs.

Snagging one of the napkins she wiped her face. "Well, maybe it is." she teased with a devilish grin.

Mitchell raised his eyebrows. "Err..." he said before leaning other and clapping her on the back to help her. "You all right?" A part of him was proud of making her laugh. People liked people who made them laugh. At least, he did. And who didn't like to be liked?

"I've got to admit that you know how to make a man feel reassured," he stated warily. He couldn't even be sure how much of a threat it could turn out to be, not when he didn't know what kind of questions she could ask, not when there were so many things he did not remember. It terrified him to no end.
