Characters: Lyra and Amy Pond
When: Sunday evening
Location: their room
Warnings/Rating: low
Summary: Lyra tells Amy what Pan is.
Status: Closed/ ongoing

Lyra liked this Amy girl. Amy had told her that she'd been on the train for a month, and they'd been living together since then, but Lyra had no idea of this - she'd only just arrived! But Amy had acted cautiously around Pan, and Lyra figured most people who didn't know about daemons wouldn't have done so.

Pan was quietly lying on the floor between the two beds, and Lyra looked over at Amy and impulsively said, "He's not a pet. He's a daemon."

At that, her daemon bolted up and to her arms. Lyra held the trembling pine marten and tried to comfort him as best she could.

"Lyra ..." he moaned quietly, pressing his face tightly into her neck.

"It'll be okay," she whispered gently.

Amy's first thought was demon like. . .like how Meg was a demon. Actually, Amy's first thought was "huh?" because she'd been laying with her eyes closed on the bed and it took her a moment for her to sit up and register exactly what Lyra had said.

She wasn't entirely sure at first how to reply to this. Amy wondered briefly if the amnesia bug had taken a turn for the more colorful. Then she remembered that she was on a time and space travelling train. And there WERE demons on board. And angels. And her closest friend on said train could fly.

And her best friend in the entire world had two hearts and her husband had been plastic and. . .and obviously anything was possible.

Amy smiled at Pan now, because he was obviously upset and then raised an eyebrow slightly at Lyra. "Sorry. I'm not quite sure what that means."

Pan was chittering lightly, freaking out, and Lyra looked at Amy, calm as could be, and very naturally said, "You know ... you know how you have a soul? Or maybe it 'ent called a soul where you're from, but that special part of you that's just 'en no-one can take it away from you, 'en it's with you 'til the day you die?"

Lyra stroked Pan ever so gently. "That's what Pan is. Only in my world, they 'ent called souls, they're daemons. Some places have humans with inside daemons - like yours - and some places have daemons with no humans, and some places - like mine - have daemons on the outside."

Amy nodded. "We call them souls too," she said after a moment's though. "It's the. . .thing that makes you you."

She was sure there were more artistic and pretty ways that people put it, but she had never been given over to poetry and semantics. With the exception of the encounter with Vincent VanGogh, which had been something else entirely.

Amy shifted around to where she was sitting more comfortably. She smiled again at Pan. "So he's your. . ." Amy couldn't think of the word. "I don't have a good word for it, but I do understand what you mean," she said after a moment.
