Characters: Harley Quinn and Matt Prept
When: Saturday Evening
Location: Car 3 - Kitchen Car
Warnings/Rating: None!
Summary: Waffles Part II
Status: Closed/Ongoing

By Harley's best guess, she'd made approximately one trillion waffles. Which wasn't a bad thing; she could stick what was left of 'em in the fridge, and let people nibble on them as they wanted. Yes! With a FREE WAFFLES sign. Should she mention the ones she'd gotten creative with? Nah. Mostly they were fine, with normal things like chocolate chips or blueberries in them. She wasn't sure she could find the one she'd made with tabasco sauce; not without tasting it, anyway. It would perk up someone's morning at some point!

The kitchen was an absolute mess, and Harley would totally clean it up. But she was taking a well-deserved break, curled up on the floor with her back against the cupboards while she used the TrainTwitter. There was enough batter for another couple of waffles; but Harley was so full, she wasn't sure she could manage another one. A few chocolate chips from the bag at her side, though, that wasn't filling. Not really healthy either, but she'd pig out on veggies tomorrow and it would all work out.

Matt hummed as he popped in, and grinned at her. "Looks like you had a lot of fun!" He was bouncy and headed for her as she lay, curled up like that. he settled opposite her. "Are you okay?"

He felt a little worried at her curled up state, for it made him a little nervous.

"I can get help if you need it?"

"Huh?" Harley looked up from her phone, and her face split into a wide grin. "Hey, it's the Mattster! Nah, I'm fine. Just resting. Making mountains of waffles is hard work!"

Stretching up, she set her phone on the counter. Wiping one flour-covered hand on her jeans, she offered it to him. "Matt Harley, Harley Matt. Nice meeting you in person, not just over the Train Twitter."

"Nice to meet you, Harley!" He shook her hand and smiled at her, then grinned, settling to the floor to be closer to eye level, not minding flour or whatever else was on the floor.

"You look like you did a lot! And i saw like, people wandering away, all full and stuff. Not a bad way to make yourself known!"

He grinned at her. She was fun!

Harley shrugged, still grinning herself. "Nah, I'm just used to making heaping piles of food all at once. There's always someone lookin' hungry lurking around somewhere!" She wrinkled her nose a little, smiling at him, then bounced to her feet.

"And speaking of hungry. You gotta decide what you want in your waffle before I can make it!" She tugged at one pigtail thoughtfully, looking at the pre-made waffles. "Or you could have one of those. But I'm not so sure what's in any of 'em. I got kind of creative toward the middle."

"Oh yeah? Cool." He thought she was fun, and funny, and she had energy few of the adults did. he followed her up, and grinned at her. "I might wait until you make a new one or two. I like chocolate, and blue berries, and strawberry." He nodded.

"And bacon."

Harley got along well with kids. Well okay, she got along well with most people if she was trying, but kids- well, they hadn't grown up to be jerks yet. They didn't look down on her for having toys and bein' gleeful to jump into a ginormous ball pit. They just got it, the way most adults had forgotten how to.

She hadn't always been like that. But the past was the past, right? No use worryin' about it when today was so much more fun.

"One Choco-Baconberry Bonanza Special, comin' right up!" Harley rubbed her hands together and looked thoughtful. "I think we'll need to do the bacon first. Then we can sprinkle the bits into the batter, and not hafta worry about them getting cooked right or not. I don't like makin' Salmonella Specials."

There was a hint of a skip to her step as she moved toward the fridge unit. "Have you seen this thing? It's hugegantic!"

Matt laughed and bounced, watching her go. "Sounds good! I can help!" He followed along with her, a spring to his step. She was nice, and fun, and he felt like maybe he was making a new friend.

And that? Was just awesome. The combination sounded really cool, and he couldn't wait to eat it!

"It is! I think it got larger. The train got bigger during our last stop." He nodded.

"Where'd you learn yo cook?"

That was exactly what she was talking about. Where most grownups would think that waffle sounded like Gross City, this kids just went with it. And Matt seemed funner than most, even. Bouncy too.

"Of course I need your help. You can be my sous-chef! That means 'assistant to the chef.' I looked for the big white hats, but couldn't find any." Not even a 'Kiss The Cook' apron. Disappointing.

"Oh, I've cooked for ages," Harley answered, sifting through shelves to find the bacon. "I had a little brother growing up, and our mom was always working. Then when I lived with my b- my ex-boyfriend, I cooked for him, and our friends too, lots of times. A-hah!" With a noise of triumph, she located the package of bacon, and placed it solemnly in Matt's hands, then moved around him to go look for a clean pan. "Now- well, now before I got here anyway- I've got a couple of roomies I cook for sometimes, when they let me."

The pan found, Harley plopped it on the stove, and turned up the heat. "So the train used to be smaller, huh? How long you been on it?" She still thought the train was the best joke she'd heard in a long time, but she hadn't known it trainnapped kids. His parents were probably losing their minds, wherever 'back home' was for him.

"Cool! Whatever you like! I've been learning to cook on the train, until the stupid thing made the woman was who teaching me forget what she knew, and me!" He shook his head, annoyed still. But he smiled again, at her as she spoke.

"I'll ask around. I'm sure we can find one! Eventually"

He listened, grinning, and nodded, taking the bacon, following her about as she got stuff. "Sounds like a lot of experience. Cool!" He smiled as she asked him.

"Yeah. It had maybe half these many cars, and like a third or a fourth as many people. And as for me? I think I've been on the train for about four to four and a half months. Just had a birthday a week or so back." He nodded.

"It's a lot better than where I was before."

"Don't worry, Mattaroni. They'll be back to normal soon." Harley's voice was confident as she spoke, keeping an eye on the pan. "Like I said; it wouldn't be funny if it was permanent. And if the train's got one thing, it's a sense of humor." She nodded toward the bacon on his hands. "The pan's almost ready. Peel off a couple of strips, and set 'em right down in there. Then go wash your hands; always do that after you handle raw meat. Germs and stuff."

She started moving again; pouring the last of the batter into a smaller bowl, and reaching for the little bowls of fruit she'd set up earlier. There wasn't much of any of them left; instead of using the tongs, she dumped what was left of the blueberries and strawberries right into the bowl. "Happy birthday! How old did you turn?"

So the train had gotten bigger. And someone earlier had mentioned food being an issue; well, no one had yelled at Harley about wastin' any of it. And she hadn't wasted it! She'd made food! She'd eat the tabasco waffle herself if no one wanted it.

Her nose wrinkled again, as she smiled in his direction, stooping to snag the chocolate chips from the ground. "Rough times back home?" Her question was as conversational as it'd been before. "I've been through my fair share of those."

"I know. I am absolutely sure of it. The train is weird, but it is definitely a wild place to live sometimes. You missed us being in dinosaurland."

He grinned at her as he watched her work. He blushed as she wished him a happy birthday. "14. felt weird, and I mostly hid from everyone. Didn't want a celebration."

He watched her work, and put strips in to cook, then washed his hands, listening and watching her work.

When she asked about rough times, he shook his head. "Not back home, no, but this isn't my first interdimensional kidnapping. I fell through a door, a portal, or just some sort of hole, into a castle in Hell for a while. Come to think of it, it's been almost two years since I was home." He nodded.

"Dinosaurs!" Harley's eyes lit up. "I missed dinosaurs?!" She actually stomped her foot a little. "Man, I miss all the fun! First no amnesia, then no dinosaurs? What's next! If there's a big ol' party goin' one somewhere and no one told us about it, they're toast. I'll totally toast 'em." But she was grinning, so Matt would know she wasn't serious. Mostly wasn't serious.

She'd added the chocolate chips, and was stirring the whole mixture, keeping an eye on the bacon, when her new friend dropped that little bomb. And Harley had seen some pretty crazy stuff; she'd done even crazier stuff. But she was pretty sure she'd never actually met someone who'd been to Hell.

Should she say something? She'd stopped, raised an eyebrow at him. If she was 14, would she want anyone to say anything to her? No; definitely not. Harley had already decided to mention her own checkered - pun intended - past as little as possible on the train. It was just easier that way. If she was going to share anything, she definitely didn't want anyone giving her the third degree.

"Grab a spatula and turn the bacon, will ya?" She asked instead, the grin spreading over her face again. "You ever done any gymnastics, Mattster? You've got the energy for it."

"Uhm, yes? Sorry?" He grinned at her. "I'd never leave you out, just so you know. You're awesome." He nodded. Matt liked this passionate and strange woman and hoped she would stick around.

He was grateful she didn't react to that. It seemed to always make people freak out, and he hated that. He wanted to be just like everyone else... some. At least when it came to not being known for having been in Hell. Sometimes he regretted telling people, but he felt he wanted to be honest. He smiled at her expression.

"Sure! I can do that." He snagged the spatula and turned the bacon, and blinked at her next question. "Nope, well, not outside of rollerblading a lot. If that counts. I never knew anyone who knew any, really." He paused then eyed her. "Do you do them?"

"Aw! You're pretty awesome too! Are you goin' to go to that prom the teenagers are setting up?" But the question was driven out of her head almost immediately.

"Do I do 'em?" Harley echoed the question dramatically. "Do I do 'em. Hold this for me." She passed him the bowl, and backed up to nearly the front of the car. Harley's hands rubbed together a little gleefully; she rolled her neck, then her shoulders, ending with shaking out her arms, getting all the blood flowing.

Then she moved.

Round-off, handspring, then take the momentum and flip, flip, one-handed flip that twisted her so she spun sideways in midair, one foot flying out for an eye-level kick as she came down solidly on the other one. Harley'd broken a guy's jaw in two places once, with that kick; but instead of mentioning that she spun again, foot still in the air, falling to the ground in a front split facing the way she'd come, and the boy.

Her hands went into the air. "Ta-da!"

He watched, mouth open, and held the bowl, as she moved. Wow!!!

When she was done, he carefully put the bowl down and clapped hard and long. "Yeah! That was awesome!!!" He grinned, bouncing some, cheering for her. "That was pretty amazing."

He eyed her and nodded. he liked it!

"I want to learn how to do that!!!"

Harley bounced to her feet and bowed deeply, grin spreading wide on her face.

"We'll have to start small," Harley said, giggles breaking through her words at the smile on his face. "Somersaults and cartwheels. Backwards and forwards. And falling!" She moved again to pick up the bowl as she spoke, fishing the bacon out of the pan with the spatula.

"That's first. You gotta know how to fall right. 'Cause you do it a lot!" Reaching for a knife to cut the bacon, she winked at her friend. "Even I still fall, all the time." Mostly when she'd just been hit by some big ugly two-bit goon, but that wasn't the point.

Matt nodded, smiling a little, listening raptly. "Whatever you want, whatever you think is best. This is awesome!" He listened and nodded, wanting to know, wanting to be able to do what she had done. Wow!

"Falling, okay. I want to learn it all. Just... tell me when." He smiled hopefully at her, eyes wide. This was great!

"We'll make plans," Harley decided, nodding. "There's a gym car, right? They'll have mats! And then you can learn to fall without gettin' hurt without, you know, gettin' hurt." The goop in the bowl looked promising!

Batter full of bacon and fruit. Harley gave it one last, vigorous stir, and poured it into the waffle iron.

"Anything else you wanna add to your creation, Mattaroni? I had one with skittles and gummy bears earlier, it was yumtastic."

"Yay! That sounds fantastic!" He danced in place, then nodded. "We do, and there are!" He watched as she poured waffles, and then grinned, shaking his head. "Not to this batch, maybe the next one?"

He smirked at her. "I wonder what pizza waffles would taste like..."

Pizza waffles? Pizza waffles? Harley stood there for a second, lost in thought, empty bowl still poised over the waffle iron, before she remembered what she was doing. "Pizza waffles!" She tossed the bowl onto the counter and nearly wiggled with glee. "That's a great idea!"

Right. Waffles. Harley shut the iron, and turned back to the more important thing; Matt. "That sounds so friggin good. What should we put on it?! Tomato sauce," she started ticking things off on her fingers. "Cheese, pepperoni- what else? What kinda pizza you like, Mattaroni? Olives? Mushrooms? Anchovies?" She paused, and wrinkled her nose. "Not anchovies."

Matt grinned at her. Sometimes he had good idea, yep, sometimes, he really did. He thought so, anyway. He liked this wild woman, but he wondered where she got most of her energy! She was bouncier than him, sometimes!

he hmmed as he thought. "Tomato sauce, yes, and cheese, and peperoni, and sausage or ham, and maybe some olives and mushrooms wouldn't be bad. Maybe one with beef or chicken instead of the peperoni." He nodded as he thought, pacing a little.

"Ewww. no Anchovies, please."

Harley did actually bounce now, just a little, her hands clapping together as her pigtails went up and down. "Wouldn't it be awesome if we could make like, a really big waffle? All real-pizza sized??" And then people could have slices!

"Or- ooh! How about a dessert pizza waffle too? Cause they're kind of sweet anyway- we could put some red food coloring in frosting, or cream cheese, and sprinkle candy and stuff over the top like toppings!" She pointed a finger at him. "That's it. I'm dubbing you the Master of Waffles!"

He grinned at her bouncing, doing a little bouncing himself, and nodded. "That would rock. I wish we could!" He chuckled at the idea. It would be supercool!

"That could be fun! Like that makes sense! " Then he blinked and laughed and pointed at himself. "Me?? How so?"

"'Cause you are, that's how. Who came up with pizzaffles? Wasn't me. And who's sayin' wish? Mattaroni, we'll make it happen." Harley's hands were rubbing together. "I know a guy in Gotham, he makes specialized stuff. All sortsa toys and tricks. If he can't rig an extra-large waffle iron I'll-"

The quiet ding of the waffle iron being done interrupted the thoughts whirling faster every second. Harley blinked, coming back to the moment. They weren't in Gotham. They were trainnapped. And everyone and everything she knew could be, for all she knew, literal worlds away. Gotham was gloomy sometimes, but it wasn't monochrome.

"Oh. Waffle's done." Her voice had gotten relatively quiet. "I'll get it."

"Oh, er, okay?" He grinned at her enthusiasm. She was definitely into things!

He bounced as he considered her words, and he nodded. It sounded good, and he was confused by Gotham until the waggle iron went ding, and he blinked as she blinked. "You alright?"

Matt stepped up and looked at her, concerned.

Harley's own bounce had definitely been dampened. It was in the way she moved as she opened the waffle iron, although the combination of chocolate, fruit, and bacon smell wafting into her face did bring a hint of a smile back onto her face.

"Yeah," she said as she worked. "I'm okay. I just- the train is fun, and funny, but I miss home, you know?" The way the city smelled at night, full of cars and gunfire and possibility. Red misting the orchids. Kitty prowling around feeling grouchy. Eddie, who was probably still pissed at the three of them after the last time. Harley had been trying to think up a way to cheer him up, but she wasn't that good at making up puzzles. And the one person she shouldn't miss, the guy she was supposed to be over and done with-

Her hands moved as she remembered, sprinkling chocolate chips and more bacon over the top of the waffle. When Harley managed to come back to herself, she saw she'd sprayed whipped cream into the shape of a big, widely grinning face across the top of the waffle.

Matt nodded. "I'm sorry. It sucks to be kept away from something you want. I hope you're allowed to go home soon. You are awesome and I would miss you, but you deserve your own fun an your home."

He looked down at the waggle, and he blinked. "Ah, a smiley face?"

That surprised him, but then he had the feeling that Harley had some of the same things other Adults did, issues stemming from being around so long.

"Yep!" Harley reached out one hand to ruffle Matt's hair, just a little. "It's a Cheery Choc-Baconberry Bonanza Mattaroni Special."

She set the plate on the counter, and rummaged for a fork. "C'mon, you have to taste it now, I need to known how it is!" Her grin was almost as big as it had been before.

His eyes lit up.

"This is great!" The first part of that was spoken with food in his mouth, but he swallowed mid way through. He stabbed another piece. "You did awesome!"
