Characters: Juliette Silverton and Cato
When: Friday afternoon
Location: The pool
Warnings/Rating: None on her part, but we all know how Cato is so we will say lowish and might change.
Summary: A little run in at the pool.
Status: Closed, ongoing, and dice.

Juliette had found her favorite place was around the pool. Part of that was because she couldn’t really enjoy this type of stuff back in Portland where the weather wasn’t always the best so she was taking full advantage of it now. No cares in the world or more like she was pretending not to have any cares while trying not to think about the scratches on her hand. Juliette was starting to wonder if she should cover them up to keep from people asking question or worrying about her. Nothing they could do, but she was just happy that she wasn’t in a coma or anything. Then again if what people said was true, she was probably going to be wishing for the whole coma thing.

Today she decided to sit out by the pool once again to work on her tan in case it would be a while before they were back somewhere with a beach or a nice sun. Her red hair was left down as she relaxed in a lounge chair with the thought of maybe going for a swim later or maybe finding Nick to see if he wanted to do something. He was a big boy who she didn’t need to spend all her time with, but she knew it would be nice to see him for a bit during the day and go have fun. Relaxing for Juliette was fun for a bit until she found herself bored without having anyone to chat with. Glancing around, she sighed at the sight of one person she probably shouldn’t talk to considering he didn’t seem too fond of her, but she figured what the hell. “Hey,” she called to the guy now wishing she knew his name because the whole hey thing could be to anyone. Plus she doubt yelling ‘I see you decided to come near the water’ would go over so well.

Cato raised his head, looking in her direction with a distrustful sneer. He didn't like people addressing him out of the blue, especially when he was in an unfamiliar environment where he felt even the least bit vulnerable. He suddenly wished he'd brought his sword with him, and at that thought, the scowl deepened.

He'd come to the pool because he hated the idea of there being a place here he wasn't comfortable with. It was just goddamn water, right? He was going to confront it, fight it, and come out victorious. Or, at least, that had been the plan before he realized he had a fucking audience.

"What the fuck do you want?" he growled.

From the way the young man talked, Juliette could tell he didn’t live the easiest life around, but it wasn’t her place to judge. The fact he was down by the pool had her slightly confused considering he seemed to not be a huge fan of the water. A sigh left her lips as she sat up more to look at him when he had to give her some attitude.

Juliette wasn’t the type to get all bent out of shape; however, she wasn’t the type that allowed people to talk to her like that. “Excuse me. You don’t need to give me some attitude when all I said was hey. How would you feel if someone gave you attitude for no reason at all?” She asked with a raised eyebrow, leaning forward a bit as she waited for his answer.

“You do realize that you can go in the water and I’m not going to laugh at you or anything. If you want help with learning I’m willing to teach you,” she offered with a small smile. “And before you say it I’m not trying to be mean or anything.” Last thing she needed was for him to think she was picking on him or something when that wasn’t her style. Juliette was too old for that shit.

Cato's face burned in a combination of humiliation and fury at her words. How dare she be so fucking condescending? He was half tempted to throw her in the goddamn water by her hair and hold her under until she closed her fucking mouth permanently.

Bitch.

"Who do you think you are, my fucking mother? Blah blah blah, be nice Cato, blah blah blah, how would you feel if...blah blah blah. How about how would I feel if some condescending bitch who doesn't even know me rubs it in my face that she's better than me at swimming. For no damn reason. No, I don't fucking want your help."

Dammit, this hadn't been why he came down here. He hadn't been this furious in ages. Of course, nobody'd dared to treat him like that in ages, either.

Juliette really didn’t mean anything by it though she saw from the way his face was that he was taking it the wrong way causing her to sigh. People who didn’t live near water never had a reason to learn how to swim and nothing wrong with that.

“No, but unlike you I was raised to have manners and to offer to help when someone might need it,” she tossed his way. The bitch comment hurt, but she just shrugged it off because it wasn’t the first time she been called one in her lifetime. “First off, I wasn’t rubbing it in your face. Second of all, plenty of people don’t know how to swim, and third I was trying to help since nothing wrong with getting help if someone else knows how to do something another person doesn’t,” she pointed out.

Sitting back, she allowed herself to get comfortable before speaking up again because she really didn’t shit from anyone including a punk like the one that she was dealing with right now. “I’m sorry if I offended you in some way, but I was just trying to offer some help if you wanted it. A simple no thanks would have been just fine,” she dealt with worse in the last few months that this kid wasn’t going to scare her or freak her out.

Cato scoffed, crossing his arms across his chest.

"Raised to have manners, eh? Well, from the age of six, I was raised in a training school where I was taught to use weapons, kill, and avoid being killed. Not a lot of fucking room for manners."

Or friendship...or fun...or anything other than training, really, but that was neither here nor there.

"And people who did better than me? Competitors. People who needed to die so I could survive. That's how I look on life, and that's how I look on your bullshit offer."

Juliette knew he ended up dead considering he told her how later on in his world that was what happened to him. Along with the fact the person that killed him was around this place somewhere. Yes, she felt bad for him, but she doubt making that known was a smart move on her part.

“That sucks, but this isn’t your world anymore and I don’t think you’re at training school anymore,” she said, reaching down to take a sip of her water from her water bottle before placing it back down at her feet.

Okay, considering the bits and pieces she picked up from him about his world she could understand why he didn’t like people who were better than her. Though she wasn’t from his world she still tried to look at the bigger picture before making comments that came off as judging.

“Back in your world, I can understand that. I’m not a competitor, I’m not going to try and kill you, and considering I have a thing against violence you really don’t need to worry about me trying to take you out.” She told him, watching him before shaking her head. “You can take the offer however you want, but I meant it as a nice gesture since only two reasons I would ever consider dropping my belief on violence being bad to kill you and you haven’t done either.” Very few things could get her to be violent but she would to protect the people around her or herself.

Cato crossed his arms, sneering at her.

"You couldn't kill me if you tried. I know twenty ways to kill you with my bare hands."

He sat on a chair by the pool, but did not relax any. His whole body was poised to pounce at the slightest provocation, as it usually was.

"And people who are against violence are either cowards or incompetents."

Juliette wasn’t going to argue about how he might have a better chance of killing her just like she wasn’t going to say anything about how if he killed her that she had people around here that would hurt him. No, she could take care of herself whether people believed it or not she just didn’t like to use violence as a means to solve a problem.

“You might be able to kill me, but I wouldn’t go down without a fight,” was all she said and that was true. Juliette was against violence didn’t mean she was going to roll over and take it.

At least he was sitting, but she wasn’t going to tell him to relax because she figured that would just get him all angry again. Kid had enough anger in him that she didn’t need to add to it.

“I’m not either. From what I hear about your world along with what I know in my world violence solves nothing just causes more problems. Why use violence to solve something when you can use words? Back in my world people were hurt over stupid shit or kids got hurt because people didn’t keep an eye on him. People may disagree with me, but that's my belief on the whole matter. I’m far from either one of those,” she commented fighting the urge to go off on a long speech about why she was against violence because the kid would be here all day. God she really did sound like her parents sometimes! “Plus I might not be a fan of the whole violence, but I do use it when I need to. Considering the shit I was going through at times back in my world I do know how to take care of myself.”

Truth was, Cato didn't really give a shit. She could ramble on forever about how violence was bad, blah blah blah, but all that peacenik bullshit bored just bored him... as well as sounding slightly treasonous to his ears.

"Well, it's worked just fine in Panem," he said with a shrug. "We've had seventy-four years of peace and prosperity because the Capitol keeps the Districts in line with the Games. And it gives me the chance to find honor and glory that I couldn't get any other way. So fuck your peace."

Juliette didn’t expect people to agree with her on the whole violence thing just her views. Nick was a detective and she learned to adjust to having a gun in the house even though she wasn’t a fan of them. Everyone had their own views, but she still was going to say her part.

“And that’s fine because that’s your world, but I still don’t need to agree about the whole violence thing,” it wasn’t her world, she didn’t know how things were done, and she couldn’t say anything unless she knew the place like he did. Though as he finished that part of her was fighting the urge to say something else considering that didn’t sound like it was all fair only she had no say because it wasn’t her world. Better to just let it go than to argue about his world on how that wasn’t a way to keep people in line. “Yeah, and according to what you told me you end up dead, right? So how is that going to get you glory and honor?” She asked, tilting her head to the side. Juliette kept her eyes on him because she wasn’t sure how he was going to take that comment. “Don’t you have certain jobs in your world that could get you the honor and glory you want?” She asked, biting her bottom lip for a brief moment. The young man seemed to be rather smart just had some anger issues and a mouth on him that she wanted to smack.

"More glory than being a Victor in the Games? Fuck, nothing in Panem'll do that. Everyone in my district is either a miner or a peacekeeper, really, and I never wanted to do either of those damn things."

Not that he ever got a choice, since his parents had shipped him off when he was six. But she didn't fucking need to know that.

"So what's all your damned peace gotten your world? Huh?"

"And you can't move to another district to do something that interests you?" She asked since maybe once they were in a district they had to stay in that one. His whole world was one she never even heard about so she didn't want to assume something and be wrong. "Did you ever want to be anything other than a victor or no?" She pushed a piece of her red hair back, waiting for an answer.

Juliette shrugged slightly, "Honestly? I know my world isn't always all that great, but I refuse to be involved in the whole violence shit unless it's to protect someone I care about or protect me. Up until this year I wasn't really involved it violence, but I did it to protect myself and someone I care about. Peace may be something I want but not everyone is for it and it won't ever happen so I just don't get involved in violence," she said. Juliette wasn't an idiot and no matter how much she would love the violence to stop it never would.

Cato gave her a strange look.

"Of course I can't just move to another district. It's my District. You don't just leave. Nobody does. And what the fuck else would I do? I'm happy, and I don't give a fuck what people like you think about my life and my world."

He paused, crossing his arms.

"And I don't know what kind of poncy little world you're from, but it's real easy to condemn a world where you don't live and that you don't understand."

To Juliette, she was assuming his world was like the one she was from where a person could decide to move to a new area if they wanted without much thought. Though by the face she started to think it wasn’t the same. “I haven’t said anything bad about your world or your life because I don’t know it. I just didn’t know if you could have decided to do something else. I don’t know what kind of careers your world has so I can’t say what you might want to do,” she told him with a sigh. “If you’re happy then it doesn’t matter what other people say, but I just thought it was an option.”

Juliette looked at him with a raised eyebrow before shaking her head. “I don’t always like my world; however, I haven’t really judged your world because I don’t live in it. All I said was I doubt anyone is going to kill you around here,” then again she could be wrong. If he had this attitude with others she figured some would want him dead and he said how someone on the train had killed him back in his world. “Or at least I won’t be trying to kill you.”

"Well, I can't move around, okay? That's not an option for me. We just don't fucking do that. Our District is where we live, and we don't leave. The Capitol doesn't like it when we leave. My brothers are Peacekeepers, because we're not poor enough that we have to work in the mines. And I'm a Career Tribute. It's my job to bring honor and glory to my district and my family. It's a respectable thing, and don't you fucking be insulting it."

He looked towards the horizon, a slight sadness entering his eyes, and his shoulders falling a bit. In the dark nights, with Glimmer sleeping at his side, he'd often wondered if it had all been worth it. Maybe it hadn't been. But he wasn't going to share his doubts with this woman. It was hard enough sharing them with Glimmer.

“Okay, like I said I don’t know your world and nothing wrong with asking a damn question, right?” She asked. “You learn things by asking not by assuming. Would you rather me just assume you could move around,” Juliette shook her head with a sigh. “Based on the name are the peacekeepers like ones that keep peace in something?” That was a job she never heard before so she wasn’t quite sure. “Do you get off on swearing? Where in what have I said insulted your world? Nothing so chill with the attitude because nothing I’ve said is to be mean about where you’re from.”

Juliette took her eyes off him for a few moments to grab her drink and when she looked back at him, she noticed the way he had changed. Part of her wanted to ask and another part was afraid to. “Are you okay?” She asked before holding both her hands up after putting her drink down. Juliette figured that maybe with her hands up he would realize she meant no harm or anything in the question. “You don’t have to answer, but I figured I would ask.”

"Wow, you're a fucking genius, aren't you?"

He raised a contemptuous eyebrow at her.

"Yes, go fucking figure, the Peacekeepers keep the Peace. I think they're similar to what you guys call...Police. Sort of. Sure, it's not meant to be mean to my home, but you're just like everybody else. Looking down on us, even if it's subtle."

He shook his head, and absolutely bristled when she asked him if he was okay, looking at her with deep, deep rage and fury in his eyes, a look that wasn't exactly sane.

"What the fucking fuck is that supposed to mean?"

“Pretty much,” she had to bite her tongue to say what she was really thinking at the moment. No, she was trying to be nice even if this jerk really didn’t deserve it. “Yeah, well in my world we don’t have a job by that name so I was trying to get a better idea on the whole job. That would be like me saying something about my world and you having no idea what the hell I’m talking about. Now see since you said that about the police I have a better idea on what the peacekeepers are,” she told him, fighting the urge to sigh because she felt like she was walking on eggshells with this kid. “You don’t know me so don’t say I’m like everyone else. I haven’t been looking down on you more like I wonder about you for a few reasons. That’s your world and I have no right to say anything about it.” Part of that was a lie more she worried about him because of the whole attitude he had, but she wasn’t going to tell him that.

The look didn’t even make her flinch because she figured he was going to get all pissed at her for the question. “Your posture changed so I wasn’t sure if something was wrong,” she commented, but she didn’t stop at that. “Though I also know some don’t want to talk about their issues that I would say you didn’t have to answer, but I wanted to ask just so you know someone does want to know. Not everyone is looking down on you guys even if that’s what you think.” Juliette just shrugged since she really was only being nice.

“You do realize that I’m just asking because I wanted to make sure. Doesn’t mean I’m trying to get on your case or anything and I sure as hell am not in your face about it,” she told him with a sigh. If he didn’t want to talk to her then fine but she at least tried.

Juliette shook her head before tilting her head slightly to the side. “No, I don’t know anything about you, but I do know what it’s like to know what will happen to you later on down the line. How much it sucks to know things change for you without you even knowing yourself,” she told him before shaking her head. The kid was pissing her off only she was better at keeping her anger in, especially when dealing with a kid.

"Yeah, whatever. I don't want to talk to you anymore," he said, standing.

"I'm tired of preachy bitches who think they know everything. So I'm going to go find Glimmer."

And with that, he huffed away from the pool. He'd save swimming for another time.

"Then fine, but you really should not pretend you know people when you don't know shit about them. You don't know anything about me so don't go calling me someone who knows it all. Anyone could tell something was wrong only I asked," she pointed out before shaking her head.

"Have fun," she yelled after him without a care as she relaxed back on the seat. Juliette felt a bit bad, but she had tried and wasn't going to hold him down to force him to talk. Nope, he had to talk when he was ready and she knew it probably wasn't going to be with her.
