Hopper had no idea how to use the little mobile phone he'd been given. He supposed it was like a walkie talkie, but not exactly. It was a lot more complicated than a walkie talkie. There was no button to push down while talking, no signing over and out. He could handle the buttons, the dialing of phone numbers, sure. But all the apps confused him, and as a result he rarely even bothered to look at the damn thing.
He decided to look at it over lunch at the Cafe Tropical. It was mid afternoon, there were a few people scattered around the place, but not too many. There was a lo din of conversation, but it was generally quiet. Hopper got his phone out and switched it on. He felt like the sign on notification was as loud as a gunshot in the relatively quite cafe.
Moments after he activated the phone, a call came in. His ringtone was the generic, preloaded tone. He was very aware of people looking at him, but he opted to ignore them. He cursed at the phone when his attempt to answer it failed. He unlocked it on the second, or maybe it was the fifth, try to swipe his finger across the screen.
"Hello?" He spoke in a normal voice, but he couldn't hear the response which prompted him to get louder. "Hello? Who the fuck is this?" he demanded, his voice well above conversational right from the start. "What do you want? Who are you?" So maybe he was a bit paranoid. Who could blame him, after all he'd been through?
"No, I won't calm down," he snarled into the little receiver. "Who are you? Why are you calling me?" he all but yelled into the phone. Several people in the cafe were staring at him now. "Fuck off," he growled, and threw the phone down on the table without disconnecting the call. Punching a little button on the screen was hardly as satisfying as slamming a phone down on a base like he was used to.
