No, it was an affect of his wife's death for sure. He didn't keep a lot of friends, cause he was always an asshole, and the women he slept with behind her back didn't mean all that much to him either. The boys from his baseball team were who he hung around most, which gave him his love for kids, but he was hard on them a lot, and received MANY angry parent phone calls. Ones that Lucille was always there to take and defuse the parent's fires. She basically had his back on everything, even with how shitty he was to her. So her death hit him pretty hard. The timing didn't help either.
I'm okay with Raven finding her way inside his head. He's still human and needs someone to see who he really is, even if he tries hard not to. Bonus points if she figures him out and accepts him anyway.
Even with his lack of feeling, his survival instinct is strong. Probably cause it's the only thing keeping him going. But to survive he knows he needs people, and people need a system to follow of they destroy each other, so that's where he's at.
